Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Becki Kriege

This was our traditional all-courses day, which we run on the last Saturday of the year.  It was again very cold this morning (high 30s?).  Becki was given the weekly trophy because she won her dual with Danny Moon.  Danny now vows that he will start training seriously and will be ready for Becki in a couple of months.  Rich Hahn, who turned 39 on Christmas Day, had the only PR of the day, a 12-second improvement on his Valle Vista PR.  Bob Shuck, who has been injured for at least a couple of years, completed a Saturday course for the first time in a long time despite warmining up and running without gloves or a sweat shirt.  Stan DeMartinis also had a birthday during December.  He turned 78 but was still able to competently time our workout.

Ray and Dave had a good race on this typically cold December morning with Ray finally getting away with a quarter mile to go.  Katie Spink led the ladies.  Danny Moon, fresh from fattening up on his Carribean cruise, wasn't ready for his battle with Becki this morning.  He hopes to lose a few pounds during the week and go after Becki on the Valle Vista course next week.  Ron Nelson improved his 55+ PR by 77 seconds.  Chris and Dena improved their overall PRs by 16 and 5 seconds.

Todd cried that he would run slow, Sue (the handicapper) believed his story and took pity on him, and then watched in horror as her act of charity was betrayed by Todd. As can be seen, his team easily won. Todd showed no remorse after this race for his taking advantage of a trusting and loving handicapper.

Ray Russell sprinted away from Jim Bordoni during the last 300 yards to win the race this morning. Becki, although outkicked by Danielle Moon, the winner of the 50+ women's division at Pacific Sun, will be given credit for being the top woman finisher this morning. Elaine took home the weekly trophy because she improved her PR by 105 seconds, even though she ran the Clarksburg 30K just 6 days ago. Jim Wurm had a great battle with Hanna Laine. They passed each other several times during the race before Jim got away in the last 300 yards - and he got a bonus when he was also able to pass Dena.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Jonathan Lee

Another screwup by me today. I wrote down the wrong handicap for the Lee team. This allowed them to start 30 seconds sooner than they should have started and they took full advantage of the error to easily win the relay. Katy Spink had the best splits of the day at 16:15. 47-year-old Jim Bordoni led the men at 16:26. Jutta McCormick, one day shy of 60, broke 20:00 for this workout for the first time in four years. Ken Napier cried that he didn't think that he would break 22:00 and then ran 21:08.

Chris Hallen and Rich Collins started together as the fifth and sixth runners to start. She led him by 5 seconds after the first lap and 20 seconds after the second lap. She took the overall lead during the third lap but Rich cut 6 seconds off her lead. He cut off another 9 seconds during the last lap but ran out of time as Chris held on for the win. Elaine Erickson appeared to have the best chance to win after 3 laps as she had recovered 80 of the 100-second handicap lead that Chris had been given. But, the efforts of the first three laps tired her too much and she faded on the last lap. Ray Russell and Bob Pickens were the last two starters and ran together for the first lap before Ray began to gradually pull away. Ray broke the course record by 56 seconds while winning the fastest scratch time award for the third time (He previously won in 1981 and 1996). As usual, Rich and Judy Collins put on a great breakfast after the run.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Annette McPhail

All teams were rated to finish at 21:00. The Kinsch team finished first but was not given the trophy because Todd Hayes was given a soft handicap due to a hamstring injury. The next three teams started together on their last 300 with Mark Isaackson proving to have the best speed. 8th-grader McKayla Plank and 11th-grader Danielle Zelinski nearly had the best scratch time but got nipped by the Burke team. Eddie Tico pulled his hamstring on the first run. Thus, Tom Warfel ran the relay by himself, running back 100 meters after each run and waiting 60 seconds before he started his next run.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Mike Bordoni

There were a lot of good performances this morning. Ray Russell started 30 seconds behind everyone and still won easily with a gross time of 19:50. The Bordoni family put three in the top five. Mike and Matt led the way with 5 and 3-minute improvements on their PRs. Jeff Rohrer missed his all-time PR by one second by still improved his 40+ PR by 18 seconds. Becki led the ladies while running her best time on this course in nearly four years. Danny Moon led the 50+ men while coming within 5 seconds of his 50+ PR. Dick Chimenti, after holding up the start by 5 minutes while allegedly retying his shoe laces, did not run a PR. MyKayla ran the 15th best-ever time by a female runner on this course. Tim Rostege ran the course for the first time as a 60-year-old and recorded the #6 time. Dave McIntyre changed his racing strategy and went out fast this morning and was rewarded with a 51-second improvement on his PR. Gail Campbell recorded the #2 time by a 50+ woman runner (behind Jutta McCormick). Howard moved to #1 on the 75+ list in front of Stan DeMartinis. Mark Winitz got lost but at least finished. Thus, he did not earn a point toward the brown-bag award.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Slim Pickens

The team that probably deserved the trophy this morning was the Bell team. The Hurtado team substituted early in the relay with Ed Gavin for Stan DeMartinis. This improved their team time by approximately two minutes. Soft handicaps were given to Kinsch and Warfel on the second place team because they thought that they would run slow but they ran fairly hard over the last half of their runs. It was discovered after the trophy had been given out that the third and fourth place teams were allowed to start one minute ahead of time due to a math error. So, it appears that the Bell team was the first legit team to finish. No splits were kept but it appeared that Slim Pickens and Ray Russell were the fastest of the men runners and Danielle was easily the fastest of the ladies.

Phantom Dick Barrett Trophy - Linda Legregni

We had a relatively small turnout this AM as many runners were at the Corporate Nationals in Seattle and the Alameda 10K. As such, David Fergus had to hold off a good run by Katy Spink to win first place. As it was, no one else came close to Katy or David. The weekly Barrett award was given to Linda Legregni, she came within six seconds of her PR while still recovering from her injury.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winners - Bob Pickens & Pauline Beatty

Heat #1
Marian took the lead shortly before the 200-meter mark and then ran splits of 88, 3:03, and 4:36 on her way to an easy win. Pauline surprised with a 15-second improvement from on last run to finish 3rd. 77-year-old Stan improved by 23 seconds and Madelyn improved by 20 seconds.

Heat #2
Becki Kriege, fresh from a 2:34/5:18 double on Thursday night, towed the field through very slow splits of 88, 2:56, and 4:22 before Cliff took off with a 71 last lap to score the win. Ralph Poole spurted by Beci during the last 70 meters to get second. Jutta, who is now retired and will turn 60 in September, ran a great 5:56 to finish 7th. Kevin Murphy improved his PR by 21 seconds.

Heat #3
Slim Pickens took off fast and ran away from the field with splits of 67, 2:17, and 3:28. Bob turned 40 yesterday. The rest of the runners were tightly packed for the first three laps. Mike ran a 71 last lap to get away from his dad for second place. 52-year-old Danny Moon did okay for an aging runner but it is going to be tough for him to keep his streak of breaking 5:00 in the mile for every year since the early 80s.

We had a very close race this morning. Bob Pickens started 3 seconds behind Demetrios with a lap to go, caught Demetrios on the final turn and edged a little in front of him, and then Demetrios came back to win by a yard or less. Bob had the best cumulative time for the workout at 12:21. Katy Spink of the Aggies led the ladies at 13:19. Howard Powers dropped out during his 1200 leg. Ed Gavin completed his runs for the Powers/Gavin team but we did not get his splits.

The Warfel team started first and stayed there throughout the race but was not given the weekly trophy because two of their runners were given soft handicaps because they thought that they would run slow. The fastest runners appeared to be Ray Russell and Slim Pickens. Danielle Zelinski looked to be the fastest of the ladies.

Danny Moon took home the weekly trophy because he improved his yearly PR by a minute. McKayla was the top female finisher. She improved her PR by 80 seconds and moved to #11 on the women's all-time list. Her mom, Sally, recorded the #9 time by a 40+ runner. Demetrios improved his PR by 15 seconds.

Heat #1 Ken Napier led after the first lap with a pedestrian 1:40. Pauline then picked up the pace and led at the half in 3:15. Thereafter, it was little Kevin pulling away to an easy win. Grace Voss, 75-year-old Howard Powers, and 77-year-old Stan DeMartinis were all pleased with their runs.

Heat #2 This was a good race. The first six finishers stayed in a closely-knit pack until there were 500 meters to go as they passed through 400 meters and 800 meters in 81 and 2:45. Cecil made the first move, recording 4:07 at the 1200 mark, but was passed by Demetrios with about 300 meters to go. Demetrios attempted to sprint the final 300 meters but only made it through 200 meters as Tim zoomed by him during the last straightaway. The three ladies were still within a couple of yards of each other with 100 meters to go. Danielle proved to have the most speed as she finished in 5:29.2. 7th-grader Mckayla took home the weekly trophy for her sub-5:30 performance. 64-year-old Norm Saucedo and 62-year-old Ken Noel both broke 6:00. Jutta, who will turn 60 in September, barely missed breaking 6:00.

Heat #3 Bob Pickens started fast in the third heat and steadily pulled away to an easy win. He ran laps of 67, 71, 71, and 74.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Grace Voss

Jim Bordoni at the advanced age of 47 knocked 35 seconds off his course PR while scoring a close win over Slim Pickens. There were several other highlights. Howard Powers broke Stan DeMartinis' 75+ record. Grace Voss recorded the #3 time by a 55+ woman while improving her PR by two minutes. Marian Richard ran the #4 time for a 40+ woman. Dave Fergus and Slim Pickens completed all of the Saturday workouts and moved into first and second in the Cum Sat contest. Bob Rea, who retired four years ago and moved back to New Zealand, visited us this morning. Due to an injury, he was in poor shape and then wore himself out running the 3-mile warmup. As a result, he ran a PW. Bob had been running this course since 1978. So, this PW was a significant accomplishment.

This was a tough morning to rate the runners. Some were resting for the 50+ race tomorrow, Sue and Cecil were recovering from their 50K race of last weekend, and we had a few new runners that were difficult to rate. Thus, there were no close races and the Baumgartner team won by a lot, running nearly two minutes under their rating.

We had a less than stellar field on hand this morning and Becki took full advantage of the situation to score a rare Saturday victory for the women. She took the lead when she passed a staggering Danny Moon with about a mile and a half to go and went on to win convincingly. All male competitors in this race automatically qualify for the "Hall of Ill Fame". Ralph Poole moved to #2 on the all-time 60+ list behind Ulrich Kaempf with a 48-second improvement on his PR. Demetrios improved his PR by 63 seconds. Dave McIntyre improved his PR by 86 seconds. Danny added 24 seconds to his PW.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Ken Noel

Ken Noel celebrated turning 62 yesterday by leading his team to victory this morning. Cecil Baumgartner, who said that he and Sue would run slow, tried to spoil Ken's celebration by running 3:53 on his last run but came up a bit short. Ray Russell had the best cumulative time at 13:04. Katy Spink of the Aggies ran what is probably the best cum time by a female for this workout at 14:17. Kristina Mathias ran 14:37 in 1996 and Becki Kriege ran 14:42 in 1992. High schooler Danielle Zelinski and elementary schooler Mckayla Plank also ran excellent times for the ladies at 16:02 and 17:02. 64-year-old Ralph Poole may have run the best-ever time by a 60+ runner with a time of 15:57. Rich Stiller ran his best time for this workout in a little over 6 years. 8th-grader Matt Bordoni and 10-year-old Kevin Murphy also ran very well with a times of 14:27 and 16:53. Hank Lawson of the Aggies ran 8 laps without stopping in 34:57.

Dick Barrett Trophy - Pauline Beatty

This was probably Jose Palalia's last run with us as he will be returning to Mexico on Tuesday. He may have been able to have run in the mid-18s if he knew the course this morning. He waited about a minute for Scott and Dave at the Douglas turnoff and then had to stay with them through the double-gate area before speeding to the finish. Pauline took home the weekly trophy for her 16-second improvement on her previous best. Kelly led the ladies with a 5-second improvement on her PR.

Don Hogue led until he reached Saratoga Avenue. Dave and Jeff caught him when he had to wait at the signal. Dave and Jeff also had to wait for a bit. Don then took off at a fast pace and held the lead until they reached the top of the hill on Sunnyvale-Saratoga Ave. Dave and Jeff ran together until they reached Fruitvale, when Dave began to gradually pull away. Kristina and Becki ran together until they reached Saratoga Ave on the way back, when Kristina took off to finish first for the ladies. Danny Moon led the 50+ men. Sue Francis led the 40+ women. Ralph Poole led the 60+ men. Howard Powers broke the 75+ course record by about two minutes. Elaine Erickson would have taken home the weekly trophy if it had been available because she improved her PR by 37 seconds.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Jose Palalia

The scheduled workout was 12 x 800. However, since it was raining, we decided to run the 8 x Tennis Court loop relay, starting near the gym. After all of the teams were put together, Casillas, Palalia, Gavin, and Tico signed up to run. And, they easily ran 1-2. The Zades team led the remaining teams. Jose Palalia, despite the cold and raniny conditions, averaged 3:15 to lead all of us. Scott Bang averaged 3:22. Jutta McCormick led the ladies with a 4:21 average. Norm Saucedo, after an absence of many months due to an injury, started his recovery with a 4:22 average. The injured Don Packwood and Tom Warfel braved the cold conditions to do an excellent job of timing us.

Jonathan Lee put his team into the lead at the baseball fields on the last lap and then lengthened the lead to 100 yards at the end. Ray Russell, although loafing, had the best times of the day. Navraj got lost on his first interval. Tom Zades accidentally ran way short on his first loop. So, his team dropped out. Kristina Mathias led the ladies. Russ Kinsch had his best workout in awhile. All teams were rated to finish in 45:30.
