22 runners showed up for the runs on this rainy morning. This was all-courses day. So, each runner got to choose which of the six courses that they wanted to run. Becki and Tenaya were the first to cross the line. However, Slim Pickens probably had the best performance of the day with his 26:09 for the Triangle Run. This time put him #8 on the all-time 40+ list.

NINETEEN HARDY SOULS RAN THE COURSE THIS A.M. IN A COLD WIND AND RAIN. SLIM PICKENS WAS AN EASY WINNER IN 28:42 - WHICH WAS RESPECTABLE CONSIDERING THE HURRICANE FORCE WIND COMING UP FRUITVALE. ALL RUNNERS WERE WORTHY OF THE TROPHY THIS MORNING JUST FOR RUNNING UNDER THESE CONDITIONS - WE GAVE THE TROPHY TO MADELYN MOON FOR HER EXCELLENT JOB OF TIMING ALL THE RUNNERS. STAN DEMARTINIS AND DAVE MCCARTEN HAD TO SPRINT COMING INTO THE CAMPUS TO BREAK THE MAGIC ONE HOUR BARRIER. BIG GEORGE'S TIME IS AN ESTIMATE AS HE WAS JUST COMING BY THE BASEBALL DIAMOND AS THE CREW WAS HEADING OUT FOR BREAKFAST.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - McKayla Plank

This was a very cold morning for running (high 30s?) but, surprisingly, 37 hearty souls showed up for this run. Jeff and Bob immediately grabbed the lead and cruised to a tie for first place. Jeff, despite the cold weather, came within 7 seconds of his PR. Bill Dunn recorded the #13 time by a 50+ runner. Chris Baker knocked 20 seconds off his PR. McKayla improved her PR by 9 seconds while moving to #14 on the women's open list. Bob Browne ran this course for the second time. He ran 16:27 the first time in December 1980. Dave Norlander ran his best time on this course in two years, coming within 8 seconds of his 60+ PR. Jim Wurm was finally able to come out and run with us. He badly sprained his ankle at Rancho San Antonio Park awhile back and had to be carried out of the park to an ambulance.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Bill Dunn

Bill Dunn and Danny Moon started fast, gaining about a 50-yard lead by the time that they reached the college entrance. They then turned left instead of right (even though Danny has run this course many times) before being called called back. After they regained the lead, they went on to finish 1-2. Bob Browne, who last ran this course in January 1981, did stay on course, managing to finish 9th. Jim Bordoni and Don Packwood, who were saving themselves for the relay race the next day, did an excellent timing job.

This was a miserable morning for running, rainy, windy, and cold. Still, 28 foolhardy souls (Antonina and George ran on their own) participated in the workout and Todd Hayes, Dave Norlander, and Ed Gavin helped with the timing. The Bang team won but we gave the trophy to the second place team because Scott was given a generous rating. Bob Pickens had the best average at 5:12. Sue Francis led the ladies at 6:20. Stan celebrated his 79th birthday. George fondly recalled his 3:25 marathon of 21 years ago while he trudged through his 15-minute miles.

Jim Bordoni Comments
I seem to have been the only one to run Valle Vista at the usual time. When I arrived only Danny was there and he said he hadn't seen anyone so assumed everybody must have headed over to Westmont. Soon Annette and Antonina sloshed by; they were doing their own thing and finishing with a campus loop. Danny gave me his blessing to head out by myself around 8:10 or so. I ran into Slim and Stan on my way out. They apparently ran Valle Vista with an earlier start so there may be a couple of times there. I splashed around the course in 21:47, highlighted by the 40-50 meters of lake completely inundating a section of Monte Vista. It looked shallow but ended up 6-8 inches deep. I guess the Westmont people knew what they were doing!

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Warfel & Hovoncik

We had a problem with the timing this morning. The timer got all 136 splits but the recorder was unfamiliar with the names of the club members. So, he was unable to record who ran many of the splits. After talking to several of the runners, the splits were allocated as shown above.

We had a fairly close race as Stephanie Hovoncik came from third place at the start of the last loop to narrowly edge Bob Browne for the win. She had the fastest splits for the ladies at 15:09 and Bob Pickens and Matt Bordoni had the fastest splits for the men at 13:36 and 13:38. Bob did not run on a team but started each run with Matt.

17 brave souls showed up to run this ever-popular course. Jeff Rohrer roared off at the start never to be seen again as he scored an easy win. Danny also went out fast but hit the skids on Sobey Rd to fall back from second to fifth. Still, he broke 37 minutes for the first time in two years. Becki and Jim ran neck and neck until they reached Allendale, where she finally got away. Becki is the women's course record holder at 34:59 but this was her best time on the Short Six course since she ran 35:20 in September 1996. Betty Root ran the course for the first time in 2 1/2 years.

Helen Wong was the sole runner to post a PR. The last two finishers, Stan and George, got lost. Stan ran about 4.25 miles. George wasn’t sure what route that he took.

The Bordoni team started first and kept the lead the rest of the way to score an easy win. Jim Bordoni probably had the best time of the day at 9:55. Special note should be taken of Dick Chimenti's action. When he learned that his team was going to start last, did he suck it up and try to run a 30-second PR at the age of 58? No. Unlike his hard-working American teammates, he complained to the benevolent and noble handicapper and then laid down. We should also note the miscue of the day by Howard Powers. He forgot who his teammate was on his 5th handoff and tried to take the handoff from Cecil rather than from Dick. We probably had more spectators than runners. Jim Wurm and Don Packwood were selected from this vast group to do the timing and they responded with an excellent performance.

The track is closed for a couple of weeks for resurfacing. So, we substituted this workout for the scheduled 36 x 200 relay. Missy was a late addition to the first team so that they would have a complete team. Their team did not count toward winning the trophy because taking it easy this morning and it was too difficult to determine their correct rating. Jim Bordoni put his team into the lead just after the last handoff and then held off the hard-charging Ray Russell for the win. Ray probably had the fastest splits of the day.

There were a few snafus this morning. Tom Murphy and Mike McMahon, who had never run this relay before, started at 3:15 with the closest team starting nearly two minutes in front of them. Since we did not explain the course to them prior to the start and they could see no one, they drifted off course and got lost. Sue Francis strained her achilles tendon at the start of her second run and had to drop out. Dan Duston put his team into the lead during the third leg and Rick Kananen held it during the final loop. Danny Moon led all runners with splits of 8:36 and 8:42. The ladies were tightly bunched with Missy Sudan having the best time at 17:51. Stephanie Hovancik ran 17:58 and Kristina Mathias ran 18:19. We did not get Becki Kriege's times.

Bob Pickens was our fastest runner of the day, averaging 72.8 seconds per lap for his 10 laps of running. We had a good group of lady runners with Stephanie Hovancik leading the way with a total time of 14:34. Kristina Mathias, who has been sick for last last week, ran 14:36 and Missy Sudan ran 14:46. Sue Francis led the 40+ ladies with a time of 15:30. Georgia Riley led the 50+ ladies with a PR for this workout of 18:15. Danny Moon led the 50+ men at 13:45 and Ralph Poole led the 60+ men at 14:59. Helen Wong continued to show good improvement as she averaged 99.3 seconds per lap.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Slim Pickens

There were many good performances this morning, making it difficult to determine who should be the trophy winner. Bob got the trophy for winning, running a 26-second PR while not being pressed, and moving to #6 on the 40+ list. Katy Spink of the Aggies led the ladies, finishing 8 seconds in front of Becki and 60 seconds in front of Missy, who knocked 20 seconds off her PR. Norm Saucedo improved his 65+ course record by 9 seconds. Unfortunately, he did it 72 seconds too late as Ralph Poole broke Norm's 65+ course record with a super time of 19:02. Russ Kinsch broke 20:00 for the first time in 3 1/2 years. Dave Norlander ran his best for this course in a little over two years. Dave McIntyre improved his PR by 45 seconds. Ken Napier improved his seasonal PR by two minutes. Eddie Reyna improved his PR by 63 seconds while moving to #4 on the 70+ list. Howard Powers broke Stan DeMartinis' 75+ record by 14 seconds. 58-year-old Dick Chimenti was very disappointed when he discovered after running his heart out that he was 14 seconds slower than Norm Saucedo's 60+ best.

We had a small turnout for the running of the ever-popular and hilly Short Six course. Slim Pickens ran to an unassisted PR, knocking 59 seconds off his best, moving to #7 on the 40+ list, and #19 on the overall all-time list. Ken Napier expressed disappointment that Slim had missed his PR by 3 seconds but was seen smiling as he drove home. Al Murray continued his comeback with a 2nd place finish. Joe Hurtado led the 60+ runners. Dave Norlander was the second 60+ finisher while running his best on this course in a little over two years. Danielle Zelinski unleashed a devastating kick to run down Rick Kananen at the end. Tom Zades ran his best time on this course in 12+ years (however, he did not run the course from 1989 until late 2000). He improved his 55+ PR by 77 seconds. Rich Stiller was paced by Walt VanZant to a 98-second improvement on his seasonal best. Eddie Reyna improved his #3 70+ best by 13 seconds. Stan DeMartinis led the contest for farthest over a runner's PR. He was 18 minutes over his PR, Ken Napier was 16 1/2 minutes over, Rich Stiller was 15 1/2 minutes over, and Walt Van Zant was 14 minutes over. All four were pleased with their remarkable performances.

We had perfect conditions for this race (no wind and low 60s). As can be seen, Todd ran to an easy win. Ralph bettered his 2000 track 5K by 8 seconds. Sue was very pleased to better her 2/01 5K by 39 seconds as she ran negative splits (10:15-10:10). Dick Chimenti loafed, saving himself for a race tomorrow.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Terri Kinsch

Hank Lawson of the Reebok Aggies dominated this run over the last mile. Mike Bordoni led through an opening mile of 5:23. Hank took the lead during the 8th lap and passed the 2-mile in 11:01 with Mike right on his tail. However, Mike then fell off the pace and Hank went on to win by about 100 meters. Meanwhile, back in the pack, Mike Kriege was 3rd at the mile mark in 5:36, six seconds in front of Danny and 11 seconds in front of Becki. Mike and Danny faded during the second and third mile as Becki, who ran a 5:20.3 mile on Thursday night, moved up to finish third. Dimitrios was very happy to crack 19:30 for a track 5K as he improved his time from last year by 68 seconds. He said that Missy and Russ helped him a lot toward the end of the run before he turned on his 57-second 400 meter speed to pass them. Russ ran his best track 5K since 1997. Joe Hurtado evened his 2001 track 5K record with Tom Warfel. Tom had beaten him by one place in February. Don Packwood had a very impressive performance with his 22:04, which was a 39-second improvement on his February time. Tom Zades improved on his 2000 best by 9 seconds. Sally Plank averaged 7:55 per mile for her super 5K run. Terri Kinsch took home the weekly trophy because she redeemed herself with this run. She had dropped out of the February 2001 run and she dropped out of the first heat this morning after 6 laps. When she learned that helping give out the finishing sticks would not negate the last DNF and would put her into the lead in the Brown Bag contest, she hopped into the second heat and ran well. Linda Legregni improved her 2001 best by 32 seconds.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Stan DeMartinis

There were a lot of interesting tidbits this morning. Dennis Kurtis strayed off course near the Douglas double-gate area but was still able to recover in time to score the win. He can be excused for getting lost in that even though he has been a club member for a little over 10 years this was the first time that he had run the course. However, Stan DeMartinis had no excuse. This was the 21st time that he had run the course but he still rambled all over the Shadow Oaks/Saratoga area before getting back on course. Stan will definitely be a candidate for the path finder award at our annual awards dinner. Grace Voss crossed Saratoga Ave on her way to run the Farwell-Herriman course before Betty was able to get her attention and get her back on course. Incidentally, this was Stan's first road run of the year as he has made a partial recovery from his hamstring injury. Katy Spink, who came close to winning, knocked six seconds off her PR. Floyd Gerhardt, who lost third place during the last mile, improved his PR by 23 seconds. Missy Sudan's time put her #13 on the all-time women's list. She helped Russ Kinsch improve his 50+ PR by 2+ minutes. Joe Hurtado's time moved him to #5 on the 60+ list. Ken Noel, three years into the 60/64 age category, improved his 60+ PR by 35 seconds while moving to #11 on that list. Dave McIntyre missed his PR by 3 seconds. Tom Warfel ran his best time on this course in a couple of years. Tom Zades was extremely happy to beat his time from last year on this course. Danny Moon missed his PW by 20 seconds. But, he was still happy remembering his Thursday night performance in the mile. He came within 10 or 20 yards of breaking 5:10 before falling due to a lactic acid tieup. He still was able to struggle to his feet and record a 5:13. Cecil Baumgartner did a great job of trimming the trees in the double-gate area early this morning so that we could run more than single file in that section. Norm Saucedo took a bad fall during his warmup and was unable to run the course. Madelyn Moon, Ruby Hurtado, and Stephanie Wei did an excellent timing job and results tabulation.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Sally Plank

Danny Moon grabbed the early lead and held it until he reached the Saratoga high school track on Herriman (Despite the fact that he lost some time while waiting at the stop signal at Saratoga and Hwy 9). Becki then took over the lead until she reached Saratoga Ave. Ray Russell, who had been goofing off for most of the run, then caught Becki, ran with her for awhile, and finally gradually pulled away for the win. Todd Hayes, who completed the Western States 100-miler a couple of weeks ago, ran strongly to win 50+ honors over Danny. Sue Francis ran her best time on this course in nearly three years to lead the 40+ ladies. Joe Hurtado recorded the #8 time by a 60+ runner. Rick Kananen improved his 50+ best by 21 seconds. Pauline Beatty improved her 2001 best by one second. Her three runs on this course for 2001 have been 36:58, 37:04, and 37:04. How's that for consistency? Jim Wurm ran his best time on this course in 14 years (but he has only run it twice in 14 years). Jim claims that he lost a lot of time while waiting on his bike at the signal at Saratoga and Hwy 9. McKayla Plank paced her mom to a 1-minute improvement on her PR.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Dan Duston

All teams were rated to finish in 39:30 this morning. The first two teams were given generous handicaps because runners were either new or said that they would run slow. Mark Stauffer started even with John Bronson on the last leg and pulled away for the win. Dan Duston put his team into third place during his last leg and Tom Warfel and Missy Mendel held their position during the last lap. We did not get the splits for this relay but Mark Stauffer was probably the fastest for the men and Missy Mendel for the women.

Dave Piazza began to gradually pull away from Jim Bordoni after about a half mile and went on to win by about 100 yards. Tom Warfel and Russ Kinsch battled it out for 50+ honors with Tom getting the nod. With the big cat missing - Ralph Poole -- Dave Norlander scored an easy win in the 60+ division. Mike McMahon edged Don Packwood to finish as the 2nd 60+ finisher. Helen Wong led the ladies but Terri Kinsch got the weekly trophy because she improved her 50+ PR by 103 seconds. Rick Kananen ran this course for the first time in 7 years, missing his 14:59 PR by a few seconds (or was that minutes). Jim Wurm ran the course for the first time in 15 years, missing his PR of 15:14 by 5 1/2 minutes.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Ken Noel

44 runners showed up this morning to run this workout, just a day before the Holy City race. All teams were rated to finish in 29:30. The Kananen team took advantage of a generous rating that was given to Rick Kananen to win the race. We gave the trophy to the Noel team because Ken Noel ran very well to lead his team to a 3rd place finish. The 63-year-old averaged in the low 80s for his eight runs. Norm Saucedo competed well to stay with Ken through six runs before he discovered that he had to run eight 400s rather than six. Fortunately, his team dropped only three places after the discovery. Damon and Cheryl Lease flew all of the way out from Vermont to run this relay. Damon will be crewing for Cecil Baumgartner in the Western States 100 next weekend. Mike Bordoni probably had the best splits for the day but we were not able to get the individual splits because we had only one helper - Bob Pickens - out of the 45 people who showed up this morning. The remainder were alleged runners.

Ralph Poole im proved a good 65+ course record by nearly three minutes. Russ Kinsch ran his best time on this course in four years while knocking a minute off his 50+ best. Dena Noble's time put her #9 on the women's 40+ list and Chris Hallen's time put her #6 on the women's 50+ list. Howard improved his 75+ course record by a second.

Ken Napier and Helen Wong ran neck and neck for nearly three laps before Helen pulled away with a 96-second last lap for the win. They then stepped up the pace to finish in 11:48 for their 8-lap run. Most of the runners in this race ran conservatively. John Bronson ran splits of 3:10-3:01. Don Packwood ran splits of 3:21/3:01, and Pauline Beatty ran splits of 3:19/3:12.

This was a good race as only 17 seconds separated the first 10 finishers. Dave was running the race as a warmup for heat #4 and scored an easy win. Little Kevin earned half of the weekly trophy for knocking 13 seconds off his 2000 PR and beating all of the oldsters. This was another conservatively paced race as the tightly-packed field ran 3:00 for the first half mile before starting to accelerate the pace. The last lap was the fastest. Kevin ran 82, Marlon ran 81, Tom ran 84, Ralph ran 81, Russ ran 81, Jake staggered in with a 95, Joe finished with a 90, Sue finished with an 88, and Norm blazed to an 83 finish.

This was the feature race of the morning. Bob and Scott opened with 69s before Bob began pulling away. Bob passed the half in 2:19 and the 1320 in 3:32 before finishing with a 71. Scott plunged to an 80 on his third lap but recovered with a 67 on his last lap. McKayla paced Danny while Dimitrios held onto their pace for three laps before pulling away to finish fourth. McKayla, after carrying Danny for as long as she could, ran a 77 on her last lap to record a PR. Now, can she knock off 18 more seconds when she becomes a high school freshman next year?

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Missy Mendel

Easy win for Scott. Good performance by Danny as he led the 50+ men. Missy Mendel took home the weekly trophy because she recorded the 8th best-ever time by a woman on this course. She now leaves for the East Coast to get married on 6/1. She will return after a 3-week honeymoon. Ralph Poole was loafing while getting ready for a 5K race on Monday but still recorded the #2 best by a 65+ runner. Dan Duston celebrated his 50th birthday by recording the #50 time by a 50/54 runner. Jim Wurm recorded the #53 50+ best. Chris Hallen improved her 50+ best by 33 seconds and Terri Kinsch improved her 50+ best by 105 seconds. Georgia improved her 55+ best by 26 seconds. Thanks to Ruby Hurtado and Stan DeMartinis for timing the workout.

There were many notable performances this morning. Slim Pickens scored an easy win with his 40+ best. Katy Spink and Becki Kriege ran together for three miles before Katy pulled away to lead the women. Ralph Poole took home the weekly trophy as he knocked 5 1/2 minutes off the men's 65+ course record. Danny Moon, although running better lately, added 84 seconds to his PW. Russ Kinsch ran his best time on this course in 3 1/2 years. Joe Hurtado recorded the #9 time by a 60+ runner. Jake White ran well while running this course for the first time in 5 years. Rick Kananen ran it for the first time in 4 years. Rich Collins ran his best time on this course in 3 years and much better than the horrible 54:32 that he ran last December. Georgia Riley moved to #2 on the women's 55+ list with her 48:08. Tim Riley added 6 minutes to his PW - a remarkable performance. Terri Kinsch continued her excellent running of late with the #8 time by a 50+ woman runner. Ed Reyna made a wrong turn and got lost.

Demetrios missed his PR by 9 seconds because he took a wrong turn when he should have turned onto Douglas from Saratoga. Norm broke the 65+ course record by 76 seconds. Ralph Poole recorded the #2 65+ time. However, Ralph ran 23:00 back in January when he was a kid of 64. Today, he and Joe Hurtado decided to take it easy and run together. Don Packwood knocked 70 seconds off his 60+ PR. Chris Hallen moved to #7 on the women's 50+ list. Georgia Riley recorded the #3 women's 55+ time. Howard Powers broke his own 75+ course record by 41 seconds.

This was a small group for the workout since most people were saving themselves for the Compaq 10K on Sunday. The timers did a great job catching the splits. Kevin Murphy held his team together after his team mate Chris Baker blew the field away on the very first leg. John Bronson made a good showing with his partner Nao Wei who couldn't quite catch the Annette McPhail and Terri Kinsch team. Russ Kinsch showed no mercy for his wife's team as he sprinted past Annette while Terri could only watch. Kristina Mathias and Danny Moon had the fastest splits for the day.

As per Jim Bordoni, here is how we did for the 12 x 800 workout on Saturday. The Mathias, Butterfield, and Kriege teams started within four seconds of each other going into the final leg and Kristina Mathias' closing 2:45 was good enough to bring her team the win. Dave Piazza probably had the best average at 2:38+. Kristina probably led the ladies at 2:50.

Having a woman win a club road run is a rare event. It has happened less than five times in the club's history. But, this morning an even more rare event occurred. A 60+ runner finished first. Ralph Poole at the advanced age of 65 led the race most of the way and then held off Ron Nelson's furious kick to win by 0.7 seconds. Ron, a kid of 58, just could not match strides with Ralph this morning. Kristina led the ladies and Dimitrios led the open men.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Ralph Poole

The temperature was in the 30s during our warmup but increased to the mid 40s by the time we started - not a temperature conducive to fast times but better than freezing temperatures. Dave Piazza raced neck and neck with Slim Pickens for the first mile before pulling away for the win. Arturo finished second while recording the all-time #4 time for 50+ runners. Katy Spink of the Aggies led the ladies while running 8 seconds under the club course record. Ralph Poole, 13 days short of turning 65, knocked 18 seconds off his PR while moving to #2 on the 60+ list, 11 seconds behind Norm Saucedo's record. Norm broke Ken Napier's 65+ record by 41 seconds. Cecil, the leader of the 40+ division of the ultra grand prix, improved his 45+ record by 70 seconds. Joe Hurtado's and Tim Rostege's times moved them to #s 4 and 7 on the 60+ list. Georgia moved to #2 on the women's 55+ list and Chris Hallen moved to #7 on the 50+ list. Terri Kinsch improved her 50+ best by two minutes.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Rich Hahn

This was a miserable morning for running -- cold, windy, and a light to moderate rain. Still, 18 mildly mentally-disturbed runners ran the workout. We were supposed to run 6 x 1600 on the track but decided instead to run the tennis court loop relay.

Howard Powers ran in a trench coat that made him appear to be a flasher. He flung off his coat to the horror of all at the start of the last leg and the lightening of his load was just enough to enable him to hold off Bob Pickens for the win. Bob and Dave Piazza had the best cumulative times for the workout at 14:12.59 and 14:13.02. Katy Spink led the ladies at 14:51.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Jeff Rohrer

Good weather this morning -- 50 degrees and overcast -- and many of us took advantage of the conditions to run well. Dave Piazza scored an easy win while improving his PR by 44 seconds and moving to #19 on the 40+ list. We have been running this course for about 27 years and have had a lot of good 40+ runners run the course. So, that is a significant accomplishment. Jeff Rohrer has been trying for 6 years to break his PR of 34:40 and finally accomplished his goal with a 9-second improvement. Todd Hayes improved his 50+ PR by 18 seconds. Ralph Poole, one month shy of 65, knocked 33 seconds off his PR. We missed wishing Ron Nelson a happy 58th birthday but he did have a happy birthday as he moved to #11 on the 55+ list with a 2+ minute improvement on his 55+ best. Cecil improved his 45+ best by a couple of minutes while moving to #47 on that list. McKayla improved her PR by 23 seconds, enabling her to move by three runners to #13 on the women's all-time list. Sue Francis ran her best time on this course in 2 years. Pauline improved her 40+ best by 34 seconds. Don Packwood ran his best time on this course in 5 years while improving his 60+ PR by 7 minutes. Thanks to Stan DeMartinis for again timing our workout. He was ably assisted by Danny Moon and Linda Legregni.

We lucked out on the weather this morning. It rained moderately during the warmup and fairly hard shortly after we finished. But, during the actual run, nary a drop came down. We started and finished under the gym overhang, just as we did last year, because of the rain threat rather than using the normal start/finish in the tennis court parking lot. This probably shortened the normal 5.37-mile course by about 50 yards.

Dave Piazza, who was running the course for the first time, was assisted by Dave Fergus, who kept yelling the directions. Piazza took off when they reached Fruitvale with about a mile to go to score the easy win. Katy led the ladies as she was assisted by Becki, who yelled at her a couple of times when she drifted off course.

Team A, led by the outstanding performances of McKayla Plank and Jim Wurm, won three boxes of Valentine candy for their win. All teams were rated to score between 50 and 52 points. McKayla ran 3 places better than estimated and Jim a whopping 5 places. Jim attributed his performance to the fact that he now only eats 6 donutes per day rather than a dozen. Danny Moon, slowed by the effects of a recent surgery, led his team to a last place finish by finishing 22 places farther back than expected. Danny was in 4th place after about 2 miles and then quickly worked his was back through the field to finish 35th. Annette had pity on him and let him finish just in front of her.

Some notable performers included Pauline Beatty, who improved by 3 1/2 minutes over last year, Kevin Murphy, who started slow and then moved through the field, easily passing Jim Wurm and Walt Van Zant going up the Sobey hill and pulling away from a pack of 4 over the last mile, Annette McPhail, who improved by 4 minutes, Georgia Riley, who improved by 4 minutes, Sue Francis, who improved by 2 1/2 minutes, and Danny who ran 12 minutes slower than last year. Pansies who failed to run because of the potential terrible weather included Ed Gavin and Grace Voss. During our breakfast discussion after the race, some felt that these DNS (did not start) should count as double points in the unknown runner contest.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Jim Bordoni

Again, it was very cold this morning (mid 30s?). Dave Piazza had a 30 yard lead when he turned onto Douglas from Saratoga Ave with 1.05 miles to go. However, he was unfamiliar with the course and angled up Shadow Oaks instead of Douglas. Jim Bordoni finally got Dave's attention and got him turned around. But, Dave was too tired to make up the lost ground and finished 2nd. Becki led the ladies, Todd led the 50+ men, Ralph Poole led the field of six 60+ runners, Sue Francis led the 40+ ladies, and Georgia led the 50+ ladies.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Antonina Ettare

It was cold this morning (40 degrees?), which was very conducive to PWs. And many of us were down to the task as 7 PWs were recorded (I did not include those who had only run the course once before). Katie Spink had the best splits of the day at 8:30 and 8:26 for a 16:56 total. She was closely followed by Jim Bordoni and Dave Piazza at 16:57. Todd Hayes and Antonina ran very well to finish 37 seconds under their rating and 24 seconds in front of the second place team. Todd's time of 17:23 was his best for this workout since April of 1994. Terri Kinsch also ran well to finish 39 seconds under her rating. Alas, her partner ran 114 seconds over his rating. Rich Hahn improved his PR for this workout by 35 seconds with a combined time of 18:25. Todd led the 50+ men and Ralph Poole led the 60+ men. Sue Francis led the 40+ ladies at 19:37 and Jutta, who is now 60, led the 50+ ladies at 20:40. Ken Napier and myself ran a spectacular 165 seconds over our rating while trying hard. Ken got the team honors by finishing 96 seconds over his rating. He was 88 seconds slower than when he ran this workout in September. I helped our team's dismal finish by adding wrong and starting us one minute too late. Danny Moon did not run the workout, avoiding a PW. Ray Russell, after an apparent big night of drinking (how else could we explain his ineptness), recorded our splits, recording at least 40% of them correctly.

Dave Piazza cruised to an easy win this morning. Kristina led the ladies with a close win over Becki. There was a close race for 4th place as four runners finished within 5 seconds of each other. McKayla ran well in her first try at this course. Antonina knocked about a minute off her 50+ PR. Georgia got the weekly trophy because she knocked 90 seconds off her PR.
