Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Helen Wong

Lenin Zapata became the 22nd runner in the approximately 30-year history of this course to crack 32 minutes as he narrowly beat Slim Pickens. Slim, who previously broke 32 on this course with a 31:52, took over the lead in the Cum Sat contest with his 32:04 performance. Mike Hegglund knocked 33 seconds off his PR to narrowly edge Scott. Todd Hayes improved his 50+ PR by 55 seconds as he moved into a 19th place tie with Jake White on the 50+ list. Al Murray recorded his best time on this course since he ran 36:22 four years ago. Kristina led all of the lady runners. Bob Schmitt ran the 5th best-ever time by a 60+ runner. This put him into 4th place in the B division of the Cum Sat contest behind Cecil Baumgartner, Tim Rostege, and Joe Hurtado. If he runs the Valle Vista course on all-courses day next Saturday, he will take over the lead. Dave McIntyre improved his PR by nearly two minutes. Rich Stiller improved his 55+ best by a minute while running his best time on this course since he ran 41:55 eight years ago. Helen Wong took home the weekly trophy because she improved her PR by four minutes. Stan established his second 80+ course record.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Chris Cassell

21 rugged competitors showed up for the run this morning. We had a big storm overnight but, fortunately, very little rain during the race. However, the winds were extremely strong and, obviously, slowed the times considerably. Lenin left everyone during the first few yards and won by about a quarter of a mile. Slim Pickens and Joe Hurtado, who ran the Cal Intl Marathon, 6 days earlier, ran respectably. Slim led the 40+ runners and Joe was the 2nd 60+ runner. Kristina and Becki led the ladies. Tim Rostege showed that he is getting in better shape. He led the six 60+ runners while improving his last effort on this course by 3 1/2 minutes. Jake White ran this course for the first time as a 60+ runner, improving has last run on this course in July 2001 by 75 seconds. Chris Cassell improved his PR by 63 seconds. Dave Norlander ran with a huge knob on his shin (from hitting it with a hammer while attempting to knock the wooden stand off a Xmas tree). Annette improved her 50+ PR by 4 minutes. Stan completed his first Saturday course as an 80+ runner, establishing a new 80+ record for the Farwell course. Five intelligent runners avoided the adverse weather conditions by helping at the finish line.

There were many good performances this morning. Slim and Lenin ran together until there was a mile to go. Then, Slim unleashed a 5:14 for the final uphill mile to claim the win. His winning time moved him to #14 on the 40+ list. Scott Bang, after running with the leaders for awhile, fell back to 3rd. But, his time moved him into the lead in the Cum Saturday contest. Al Murray had a good battle with Becki until the final mile, when he gradually began to pull away. This was his best performance on this course in 3 1/2 years. Danny Moon’s time put him #13 on the men’s 55+ list. Missy improved her PR by 12 seconds while moving to #11 on the women’s all-time list. Danielle missed her PR by 4 seconds. Dave McIntyre improved his PR by 24 seconds. Sue Francis broke the women’s 50+ course record by 30 seconds. Helen Wong and Tom Zades duked it out throughout the race. It was a bit cold this morning but still good weather for running. Scott Bang opened fast for the first down hill mile but then Andy took over and ran to an easy win. Jim Bordoni led the men 40+ runners with his 3rd place finish. Danny Moon led the 50+ men while recording the #13 time by a 55+ runner. Bob Schmitt led the 60+ men while posting the #6 best-ever time by a 60+ runner. Kristina and Becki did not feel sharp this morning. So, they coasted to a tie. Missy improved her PR by 11 minutes (her previous run on this course was when she was pregnant) while moving to #11 on the women’s all-time list. Antonina led the 40+ ladies, Georgia led the 50+ ladies, and Madelyn established a new 60+ standard for the women. Christian Saucedo’s run today meant that he had completed all of the Saturday courses for the year and put him into 2nd place in the Cum Saturday contest. Chris Cassell improved his PR by nearly 3 minutes. Tom Warfel strained his hamstring muscle and had to walk to the finish in order to avoid being charged with a DNF.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Dick Chimenti

We were originally scheduled to run the Short Six today. But, then someone reminded me that at our annual meeting that we had agreed to have two all-courses day – one at the start of the last quarter and then again on the last Saturday of the year.

As can be seen, three women came across the finish line before any men with Kristina edging away from Becki on the Valle Vista course during the final downhill mile. Kristina won the Valle Vista race, Kelly Emo won the Douglas course race, Pauline Beatty won the Farwell course race, Missy Sudan won the Farwell-Herriman course race, John Pickens won the Triangle course race, and Scott Bang won the Short Six course race.

The handicapping was terrible this morning. The first place team won by over a minute as they ran 143 seconds under their rating. The 2nd place team ran 76 seconds under their rating. And, the 3rd place team ran 44 seconds under their rating. We had a good battle for 5th place as Al Murray passed Dave McIntyre with 100 yards to go and this barely withheld Dave’s comeback attempt. There was also a good battle for last place as Slim Pickens passed three teams during the last 200 yards to move from last to 8th and poor Don Packwood was relegated to last place. Jim Bordoni led all of the men with a 8:12.5 average. Kristina Mathias led the ladies with an 8:39.5 average. Norm Saucedo led the seven 60+ runners with a 9:35.0 average, running a remarkable 95 seconds under his rating.

Slim and Joseph ran together through laps of 71 and 2:22 before Slim gradually pulled away. He passed through the 1320 in 3:31 and finished with a 69 for a 4:40. 4 Danny Moon 5:22.0
     5 Dimitrios Stefanidis 5:33.9

Christian took the lead right away in this race and was closely followed by Jim. Christian opened with a 74, came through the half in 2:30, and the 1320 in 3:46 before unleashing a 69 final lap. Jim finished with a 74 to get 5:02. Jeff improved his 6/29 time by 5 seconds. Dimitrios felt lousy right from the start and struggled to a time 16 seconds slower than his 6/29 time. But, he still has the pleasant memory of the 55.9 400 that he ran on Thursday night.

Mr. Saturday, Ray Russell, won his first Saturday road run in 10 months. He cruised the opening downhill mile in 5:52, leaving him 22 seconds behind Todd. However, Todd then decided to ease up and Ray surged. So, Todd was caught within a half mile and Ray kept pulling farther and farther away as the race went on. Todd won when we last ran this course on May 4th with a great 28:27. Danny Moon passed Al Murray coming down the final hill and then barely hung on to get 4th place. Jonathan Lee recorded a PW, adding 51 seconds to his previous worst. Chris Baker improved his PR by 21 seconds and Mike Corrick improved his PR by nearly 2 minutes. Bob Schmitt scored a close win over Joe Hurtado to lead all of the 60+ runners. His time was the 8th all-time best by a male 60+ runner. Eddie Reyna recorded the #4 70+ time. Madely Moon established a new women’s 60+ course record. Brian Low ran his first road run since recovering from his knee surgery.

Phantom Dick Barrett Trophy Winners - Jeff Rohrer & Jim Bordoni

It was an unusual Saturday workout. Walt was not there to set up the teams. This happens sometimes, but usually Ken Napier takes over. Ken was in Alaska fishing, and Danny Moon was with Walt running in the Corporate Nationals in Sacramento. That left us chickens to mind the farm.

Greg improved his PR by 50 seconds and Dave McIntyre improved his PR by a minute. Madelyn broke the women’s 60+ record by 11 minutes. Len Edholm and Bob Blonder, who were two of the original members of the club when it was formed in 1970, ran with us. They started ahead of the regular racers and then ran short by a little bit because they did not remember the course. Len, who was the first president of the club, and Bob then joined us for breakfast at Carrow’s.

Georgia Riley said that she would run slow, was rated to run fast, and then ran slow. So, her team finished last. We had a good battle for 3rd place as Mike Hegglund just sneaked by in the final yard to pass Becki and Dimitrios, who were duking it out. Mike had the best average of the day at 3:29. Kristina led the ladies at 3:45. Tom Zades’ daughter ran with us for the first time. The workout proved to be too difficult but she did get through 3 before having to give up. Antonina ran the workout in 18:47, her best performance for this workout in 5 years. She ran the same workout last November in 20:24.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Todd Hayes

Todd Hayes won his first club Saturday run in the many years that he has been running with us. Further, he recorded the #8 50+ time for this course. Jim Bordoni went out fast, hitting the mile marker in 5:25. Todd cruised the first mile in 5:37 and caught Jim at the firehouse and then kept pulling away to win by 30 seconds. Becki hung with Katie until a little before there was a mile to go. Then, Katie accelerated away to lead all of the ladies. Dave McIntyre knocked 38 seconds off his PR. Helen Wong improved her PR by 34 seconds. She won't run with us again until August as she will be attending a Saturday class. Don Packwood bettered his 60+ PR by 16 seconds. 79-year-old Stan started early and finished early as he turned around at the mile mark. He claimed that this did not qualify as a DNF but was unable to come up with a logical reason why it did not qualify.

The winning team used Floyd Gerhardt as a substitute for John Peterson's legs toward the end because he strained a muscle. This helped to increase their margin of victory to 50 seconds. Mike Hegglund ran the fastest of all of us but I did not get his splits. Averages for some of the runners included:

Becki Kriege 38+
Jake White 39.2
Walt Van Zant 40.1

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Katy Spink

Todd took an early lead with Danny running right with him. Then, Todd suddenly stopped half way up Fruitvale, leaving Danny as Katy’s sole target. It wasn’t long until Katy zoomed by Danny on her way to an easy win. Todd finally started running again and finished second, passing Danny with a little over a mile to go. There was a 4-man battle for third place with tall Steve Kurasch kicking in for the win in this battle. Ken Napier, who turned 70 on Wednesday, posted the #6 70+ time. He passed Howard about a mile into the run. Howard later cut off Annette and Antonina when he passed them. They were loafing in preparation for the Compaq race the next day. But, after Howard’s maneuver, they sped up to beat him by over a minute.

Not a close race this morning. Danny Moon must have bribed the handicapper, Ken Napier, to get the start that his team got. Slim Pickens led the way for the guys as he averaged 1:47 per run, including a 1:41 on his last run. Kristina Mathias led the ladies with a 2:01 average. We gave the weekly trophy to Matt because he helped time until Cecil Baumgartner arrived on the scene and because he tried to warn Ken that his handicaps were errant.

Jim Bordoni came within 10 seconds of his 45+ best while easily winning our run this morning. Dwight Cornwell, visiting us from Colorado, ran the #2 all-time best for a 55+ runner. Tim Rostege holds the record at 27:31. Mike Hegglund and Nick Butterfield lost time when they were stopped by a cop for running through the signal at Saratoga Ave and Hwy 9 right in front of the policeman. Katie Spink led the open ladies and Liz Nast led the 40+ ladies. Danny Moon, although burdened by pushing his granddaughter in a stroller, beat 8 hapless souls. Howard Powers found a car and was able to run with us for the first time in awhile.

Small turnout this morning (M-N race tomorrow, 50+ race tomorrow, cold and windy weather). Par was 36:00 and nobody broke it. The Myers team lost about a minute during the first lap due to a mis-communication. Otherwise, they might have contended for first place. Tom Zades started 45 seconds too late and then gave a whole new meaning to running slow in his effort to save himself for the 50+ race. Thus, his team got lapped by the first 4 teams.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Bob Pickens

There were several excellent performances on this cold morning (mid 40s). Slim Pickens ran to an easy win while knocking 14 seconds off his PR. This moved him into a tie for 5th place on the all-time 40+ list with Bill Meinhardt and Ray Russell. Jake White holds the 40+ record at 14:04. Jake ran 20:31 today. Floyd Gerhardt improved his PR by 14 seconds. Bill Dunn led the 50+ men runners. Becki and Katie led the ladies. Rich Stiller improved his 55+ PR by 71 seconds to move to 1 second in front of Jake on the 55+ list. Tim Rostege led the 60+ men (His time puts him #10 on the 60+ list). Liz Nast of the Aggies led the 40+ women. Dave McIntyre bettered his PR by 15 seconds. Don Packwood, who has been running very well lately, took 50 seconds off his 60+ PR. Helen Wong ran great for the second week in a row, PRing by 84 seconds. Dena Noble was very pleased to come from behind to slaughter her arch rival, Tom Zades. Georgia Riley led the 50+ ladies. Jim Wurm improved his 55+ PR by a remarkable 147 seconds. However, fat and old age has left him 7+ minutes over his all-time PR. He celebrated his 55+ PR by ordering two breakfasts at Carrows rather than one. Betty Root beat her fellow 55+ runner, Madelyn Moon, by a mere one tenth of a second. Madelyn will join the 60+ crew in June along with Sue Meinhardt and Kathy Van Zant (They will join to celebrate their birthdays for the 11th year in a row sometime during June).

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Ray Russell

Heat #1
Jim Bordoni ran in the first heat so that he would not have to fight through the many runners that he would have lapped in the second heat. However, he did have to battle high 30-degree weather and no competition to record his 17:52.

Heat #2
The sun was out for the second heat. So, it was a bit warmer for this race. Ray Russell took the early lead in this race while Bob Pickens lagged back in third place for several laps. He finally caught Ray on the 8th lap and they then ran the remainder of the race together. Ray had mile (actually 1600 meters) splits of 5:38, 11:21, and 16:57.

Hank Lawson held second place for about three laps before Bob passed him. He then gradually dropped back from the leaders throughout the run but easily finished third.

Danny Moon ran in 4th place through 7 laps. Then, Bill Dunn passed him, then, Becki, and, finally Katy got him. Still, he was pleased to finish as his leg was bothering him. Becki caught Bill Dunn during the 9th lap and desperately tried to get away from him. But, Bill hung on and then kicked in with a 78 to finish 4th.

Mark Isaacson and Al Murray had a good battle for 8th place. They ran neck and neck for 10 laps, when Mark gained 5 seconds on Al. Mark had a 7 second lead with one lap to go. But, Al had a big finish to get within 2 seconds of Mark.

There was a big group initially battling for 10th place. Dick Chimenti, Cecil Baumgartner, Tom Warfel, Rich Hahn, Dimitrios, and Jose Casillas stayed closely bunched through 7 laps before they dropped Dimitrios. Jose went out the back door on the 9th lap, and Rich Hahn dropped back 5 yards. Dick, Cecil, Tom, and Rich held their relative positions until there was one lap to go. Cecil grabbed a 5-yard lead just before the start of the last lap but could not withstand the 78.0 final lap by the aging (59 year old) Dick Chimenti. Cecil ran a good 82.8 final lap to finish 11th.

Sue Francis started slow and was in 21st place after 5 laps and 20 seconds behind Tim Rostege with 4 laps to go. But, she caught him with a lap to go to finish about 35 yards in front of him while finishing 16th.

Jim Myers was in front of Norm Saucedo through 2 miles. But, Norm then stepped it up to finish 66 seconds in front of Jim. Norm had a great kick over the last 150 meters to come from 10 meters behind Robert Salinas to beat him.

The story of the day is about Don Packwood. Don has been running very well lately. He is 61 years old and, unlike some of us, has not been slipping with age. He is also very sharp in that he has a PHD and is able to count to ten without using his fingers. Last year he made a big breakthrough to run 22:04 in the 5K. This morning he battled with Dave Norlander through two miles before Dave got away from him on his way to a 21:19. But, this great effort through two miles did him in mentally. Most runners in Don's condition, exhausted mentally and physically, if they erred, would have erred by running a lap short. But, Don, after passing 5K in 21:49 (with a 108 on his last lap) ran another lap to finish with a 102 for a 23:31. It was only after one of his fellow competitors discussed the situation with Don for half an hour that Don realized that he had run one lap too many.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Don Packwood

31 runners showed up to run our most difficult course on a rainy and cold morning (mid 40s and light rain). Scott Bang scored his second consecutive road win. Jim Bordoni is running well again as he led all of the 50+ runners. Ray Russell led the 40+ guys. Tenaya Adams led a good group of women runners. Bill Dunn improved his 50+ best by 12 seconds. Don Packwood improved his 60+ PR by 4 minutes while running his best time on this course in 7 years. Congrats to Ken Napier and Dave McCarten for their PWs. Ken was nearly 20 minutes over his PR. Joe Hurtado hurt himself when he took a tumble out on the course. We may have to require all of our older runners to use walkers during their races. Georgia Riley, Norm Saucedo, Madelyn Moon, Rich Collins, Jim Wurm (an ambulance job), and several others have taken tumbles during the past year. We had great timers this morning. Danny Moon (timing so that he could avoid running another PW), Linda Legregni, Stan DeMartinis, Antonina Ettare, and Slim Pickens performed a variety of chores, including umbrella holding. Bill Meinhardt made it to a club workout for the first time in many, many months. He did a little jogging and then went to breakfast.

We had a large turnout for such a cold morning (32 degrees when we began our warmup). In any event, the Baumgartner team ran to an easy win as 14 of the 15 teams ran under their rating of 44:15. Slim Pickens and Scott Bang had the best averages for the guys at 3:47 and 3:53. Tenaya Adams of the Aggies had the best average for the ladies at 4:01. This is probably the best average that a female runner has ever run for this club workout. We had a lot of good women runners this morning as they had 6 of the top 12 times. Bob Rea flew all of the way from New Zealand to visit us. He had a bad knee and had not run a step in three months prior to running with us. Then, he ran the 3-mile warmup and the 3 miles of intervals. Jim Bordoni, Dick Chimenti, and Sue Francis did an excellent timing job.

We had a good turnout for our first Saturday workout of 2002 - 16 teams. Stan DeMartinis was the star of the day as he talked his way into a 31-minute rating, which led to his team winning by nearly two minutes. Other notable achievements for the day included 10 PWs (personal worsts) and 1 PR (by Elaine Erickson). Slim Pickens had the best splits of the day at 15:52. Katy Spink and Becki Kriege led the ladies at 17:51 and 17:53. Sue Francis led the 40+ women at 19:30. Bill Dunn led the 50+ men at 16:57. Chris Hallen led the 50+ women at 23:36. And, Dave Norlander led the 60+ men at 19:23. Dick Chimenti and Scott Bang had a great race over the last 30 yards as Dick threw in a desperation sprint to hold off Scott by a few inches. Scott did make up 90 seconds on Dick but it wasn't good enough.

Jim Bordoni did a great timing job. No splits missed. Very readable handwriting. It was a piece of cake to type up the results.

Georgia Riley took a hard fall while warming up near the start. Had a significant cut on her face. I'm sure that she will be okay but she is going to be sore for quite a while.
