Cold weather (mid to high 30s) but a lot of good performances and a few bad performances. Andy Williams and Becki ran together until there were 2 miles to go, when Andy picked up the pace and pulled away to win by about 100 yards while improving his PR by 55 seconds. Becki ran her fastest time on this course since she set the women’s course record of 34:59 a little over 16 years ago. Bob Rea visited us from New Zealand for the first time in 2 1/2 years and had a great day. His time tied him for #12 on the 50+ list with Dave Norlander. Hank Lawson improved his PR by 53 seconds. Mark Isaacson improved his 45+ PR by 12 seconds. Norry improved his PR by 95 seconds. Brian improved his PR by 14 seconds. Dave Norlander moved past Norm Saucedo on the 65+ list to #2. Dena Noble was pleased to edge Tom Zades. Kat Powell moved to #8 on the women’s 50+ list with a whopping 11-minute improvement on her PR. Georgia Riley continued her assault on all of the women’s 60+ records as she knocked 5 minutes off Madelyn’s 60+ record for this course. Jim Wurm considered using binoculars to see how far Walt was behind him. Norm and Ken Noel jogged the course together, knocking an impressive 6 minutes off their seasonal best for this course.

Kat Powell knocked 47 seconds off her PR for this workout to put her partner, Jim Bordoni, in position to score an easy win. Stan DeMartinis had a somewhat humorous finish (in that he did not seriously injure himself). He ran one leg in 20:37 but fell down near the end due to fatigue. As he was falling, he grabbed a light pole, swung around it, and slowly slid to the ground. However, as soon as he hit the ground, he quickly clicked his watch to get his split before checking whether he had injured himself – a true runner who was more interested in learning his time than checking to see whether he had hurt himself.

Very cold this morning – 30 degrees. Still, 30 hardy souls showed up for the run. Mike Kriege was well on his way to an any easy win and a sub-20-minute run when he missed the turn onto Douglas with 1.05 miles to go. He continued down Saratoga Ave to Fruitvale, running an extra 0.65 miles. Georgia Riley broke Madelyn Moon’s women’s 60+ record by 2 minutes. Jeff Bedolla took home the weekly trophy because he improved his PR by 103 seconds.

Close win for Mike Kriege over Andy. 3-minute PR for Kat and she moved to #10 on the women’s list for this course. Tom Zades improved his 60+ best by over a minute but remained #28 on the 60+ list. Andy Williams improved his PR by 21 seconds. Superb timing job by Dick Chimenti and Stan DeMartinis. Our normal timers were out on the course embarrassing themselves with last and 2nd to last finishes although Don did take it easy.

Trophy winner Madelyn Moon & Neal Gelblum
It was a great day for the Relays, Madelyn Moon took an early lead with the help of Annette McPhail running with her the whole way thus causing Madelyn to smoke her handicap rating and giving Neal Gelblum no rest...poor Neal. Ray Russell had the fastest split times followed closely by his relay team partner Jim Bordoni. Madelyn Moon, Mike Toney, Chris Cassell and Joe Hurtado all ran under there handicap time. Kat Powell and Jeff Bedolla ran a different version of the "Step Up and Step Down", Tom Warfel was seen trying to explain what the relay consisted of, but the final conclusion was that Kat and Jeff needed to run a total of 18 laps somehow.....they did. There was a closely contested last leg of the relay between Helen Wong, Dino Delyani and Dave Norlander as they all took the exchange for the 400 meters together. Dave proved to be the fastest while Helen held off Dino who had not fully recovered from his fast 1200 meter earlier. Our timers Tom and Danny proved to be of mature quality by both being over fifty kind of slow starting off with their timing duties.....and of course our stick man Don Packwood did a fantastic stick job!

All teams were rated to finish at 43:00 but only one team was able to run under par. O’Connor team got a bad deal because I forgot that Kristina is pregnant and I rated her as if she were in top form. Did not get the splits but the Conroy team probably ran way over par because I rated Rich Collins at too fast of a rating. Do not know where I went wrong with the Bedolla team. If anyone has their splits, send them to me. Ken visited us for the first time in a long while and was very pleased to run 8 seconds under his rating of 15:00. Eddie Tico surfaced for the first time in years, running the warmup.

Close finish as Mike Kriege came within 0.7 seconds of catching John at the end. Slim Pickens led the guys with an actual time of 16:41 and Becki led the ladies with a time of 18:01. Scott Bang got to keep the bottle of Cheap Red Wine for the worst performance. He started late and then sprinted at the end of the third lap because he thought that that was the end of the race. Thus, he staggered through the last lap. Jerry Lewis started 3+ minutes later than his scheduled start. McKayla ran through the race as a training run. Rich Stiller pulled his calf muscle trying to stay with Joe Hurtado during the first lap. Stan got a bad handicap. Another great breakfast put on by Rich and Judy Collins after the race. Good help at the finish line by Linda Legregni, Don Packwood, Betty Norlander, Annette McPhail, and one other individual.

Neil ran in the slow heat because he was recovering from an injury. Kristina and Becki ran in this heat because they were also taking it easy due to injuries. Dave Norlander was the first legit 6:00+ runner in this heat, beating his 6/27 mile time by 14 seconds. Rich Collins was elated to beat the oldsters at the back of the pack.

Danny moved out fast at the start but by the end of the first lap AJ, Mike, and Missy had joined him. Missy took over near the end of the second lap and stretched her lead to about 20 yards by the end of the third lap. AJ and Mike closed quickly at the end but had no chance of catching Missy. AJ knocked 2 seconds off his 6/27 time and Dino improved his mile time by 5 seconds.

Here are the guesses as to the times for the 5K on Saturday. The times for heat #1 are correct. Some of the times for heat #2 are correct. Jim Bordoni tried to get the splits at 1600, 3200, and 4800 but could not get them all because he was doing it by himself. The final times were messed up because the runnners were supposed to finish in lane 5, where the cones were. However, some runners were not aware of where they should finish. So, they stayed in lane #1 and the timers missed them.

Mike Toney missed his PR by 8 seconds. Todd Hayes ran well again, even though he ran the Western States 100-miler two weeks ago. Dino knocked 60 seconds off his PR. Dave McIntyre survived a verbal altercation with a bicyclist during his run. Brian Low ran his first Saturday course as a 60+ runner. Pauline Beatty recorded the #9 time by a female 45+ runner. 6/26/04 - One Mile Runs on the Track
Heat #1 (7:30AM Runners) 1 Ken Napier 8:22.8 2 Walt Van Zant 9:49.8
Ken said that he was aiming to break 10:00 and was pleasantly surprised to run 8:22.
Heat #2 (6:00 & Over Milers) 1 Christina Wilk 6:11.6 2 Patrick Rowland 6:19.5 3 Chris Cassell 6:20.1 4 John Peterson 6:28.3 5 Jake White 6:30.0 6 Dave Norlander 6:30.3 7 Helen Wong 6:51.6 8 Ken Noel 7:02.1 9 Sally Plank 7:16.6 10 Tom Zades 8:08.5 11 Madelyn Moon 8:22.5 12 Stan DeMartinis 10:32.5
Chris Cassell and Patrick Rowland raced away from the pack at the start, passing the opening 440 in 89 and 90 while the rest of the pack was back at 95 and slower. They reached the half in 3:07 with Christina Wilk cruising back in 3rd at 3:15. Patrick stormed into the lead during the 3rd 440, hitting the 1320 in 4:44 with Chris a couple of yards back. Christina was still in 3rd but was only 5 seconds out of the lead. Patrick raced away from Chris down the backstretch but then Christina changed gears, running her last lap in 82 to easily win. Patrick started to fall apart during the last 50 yards but held on to beat Chris. 60+ runners John Peterson, Jake White, and Dave Norlander had a close battle throughout the race with John pulling away near the end. Ken Noel blitzed his last lap in 99 but missed cracking 7 minutes by a couple of seconds. Tom Zades opened with a super fast first lap of 115 seconds but then hit upon hard times and was unable to crack 8 minutes. Madelyn beat all of the times from the first heat. Stan tried hard but couldn't crack 10:00.
Heat #3 (5:30/5:559 Runners 1 Mark Isaacson 5:28.6 2 AJ Pala 5:29.3 3 Becki Kriege 5:31.7 4 Brian Conroy 5:33.4 5 Dave McIntyre 5:48.5 6 Dino Delyani 5:49.7 7 Mark Goldman 5:53.5 8 Becky Palm 6:01.6 9 Joe Hurtado 6:08.1 10 Helen Wong 6:48.8
Heat #3 was a good race. Brian took the early lead, passing by the first 440 in 81 with AJ and Becki close on his heels. The positions stayed the same through two laps with Brian leading at 2:46. Mark was a close 4th. Mark jumped into the lead just before the end of the 3rd lap, leading with a 4:09. Becki was right behind him with Brian and AJ trailing in 3rd and 4th. Mark pulled well away down the backstretch but AJ then rallied over the last 220 yards to move from 4th to 2nd and get close to Mark at the end. Dave McIntyre sprinted by Dino in the last few yards to get 5th. Helen ran faster in the 3rd heat than she did in the 2nd heat.
Heat #4 (Sub-5:30 Runners 1 Jim Bordoni 4:59.6 2 Ray Russell 4:59.6 3 Gil Flores 5:06.9 4 McKayla Plank 5:07.3 5 Dave Piazza 5:13.9 6 Andy Williams 5:15.5 7 Danny Moon 5:31.0 Scott Bang DNF
Scott Bang blitzed the field with opening laps of 71 and 2:26 and then decided to quit. Ray, Jim, Gil, and McKayla were all closely bunched after 2 laps between 2:28 and 2:29. All four stayed together through most of the 3rd lap but Ray and Jim started to edge away from Gil and McKayla just before the the 1320-yard mark. They then raced away from the field with Ray holding the lead by a few inches until just before he reached the finish line. Ray slowed slightly when he reached across his body to click his stop watch and this allowed Jim to edge him by a fraction. Gil edged McKayla. This may have been a PR for McKayla. I know that she has run 5:06 for 1600 meters but I do not know whether she has run 5:06 for the mile. A mile is 9 meters farther than the standard high school distance of 1600 meters. So, McKayla probably ran the equivalent of a high 5:05 for 1600 meters.
Heat #5 (Consolation Heat) 1 Scott Bang 5:01.2
Scott regretted quitting after two laps of the first heat. So, he gave it another try. He opened with a 70, fell to and 80 and 82 for the next two laps and then kicked in with a 32-69 on his last lap to barely miss cracking 5:00.

Nick Song ran his fastest split on his 6th run (50.5) to put his team into the lead and they held it the rest of the way for the win. We did not get all of the individual splits but Nick Song, Scott Bang, and Ray Russell probably had the fastest splits for the guys and Kristina Park and Becky Palm probably led the gals.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Tom Warfel
Dave Piazza improved his Farwell/Herriman PR by 11 seconds and recorded the #4 time for a 45+ runner but he was gone by the time that we gave out the weekly trophy. So, we gave the trophy to another worthy candidate – Tom Warfel. Tom has been running very well lately and this morning he improved his yearly best for the Triangle course by 5 minutes. Neil Gelblum attempted to run the Triangle course but got lost when he cut over at Farwell while running up Hwy 9. The course that Neil ran is the reverse course that is normally run when runners get lost while running the Farwell course and keep going down Saratoga Ave rather than cutting over at Douglass.

Small group to run this difficult course this morning. Dave Piazza led the way as he improved his 45+ best by 10 seconds to move up 3 notches on the 45+ list to #11. He and Mike Toney completed all of the courses for the year with this run to get to 2nd and 3rd places on the Cum Sat list. Liz Nast ran this course for the first time, leading all of the ladies. Mark Isaacson took home the weekly trophy for knocking 44 seconds off his 45+ best. Tom Warfel was very happy that he improved his yearly best on this course by 4 minutes. Chris Cassell and Brian Low had a terrific sprint at the end with Chris getting the nod. Bill Flodberg recorded the #3 70+ time for this course. Betty Root was thrilled to come within 9 seconds of her 55+ PR. Stan started ahead of time and Jim Myers, who started with everyone else, slowed to run in with Stan. Bob Pickens, Aaron Lee, Neil Gelblum, Danny Moon, and Don Packwood helped with the timing.

All teams were rated to finish in 30:15. The first place team ran 43 seconds under their rating, winning by 70+ yards. Jim Bordoni timed all of the runners at the 200-mark so that we could get everyone's splits. Alas, the timers at the start line either did not know what Jim was attempting to do or screwed up. They got the times at the start/finish line every 3 laps. So, we were unable to determine all of the splits.

Jorn won the run this morning by over a quarter mile. John Pickens took home the weekly trophy with a 50-second improvement on his PR. Missy led the ladies while improving her PR by 24 seconds, which moved her to #3 on the all-time women's list. Bob Schmitt improved by 31 seconds while moving to #3 on the 60+ list. Dave Piazza led the 40+ men and Neil led the 50+ men. The ladies put 5 runners in the top 12. Danny Moon ran a short course, allegedly to get back in time to help the timers (but we already had 3 timers). The aging Jerry Lewis made a celebrity appearance for the first time in awhile. Marty Eng set himself up for a big PR the next time that he runs this course by making a pit stop during his run. Rich Collins improved his 60+ best by over 4 minutes. Floyd Gerhardt knocked 11 seconds off his PR. Tom Zades recorded his first 60+ effort on this course, putting him #27 out of 28 on the 60+ list.

The Russell team started last and easily won. They were greatly aided by the last-minute addition to their team of a runner found jogging around the campus before the high school meet. This runner, Dwight Smith, ran 99 seconds under his rating. All teams were rated to finish in 40:00. Ray Russell, Scott Bang, and Rob Nast had the top splits for the guys. Liz Nast had the best splits for the ladies. Jim Bordoni and Don Packwood did an excellent job of getting everyone's splits at the half way point of the course.

Despite the cold morning (40 degrees?), there were some good performances this morning. Bob Pickens outsprinted Jorn for the win but Jorn improved his PR by 14 seconds. Mike Toney, Kristina Park, and Joe Hurtado loafed while saving themselves for races later in the day. Liz Nast improved her PR by 24 seconds and Christina Wilk improved her PR by 29 seconds. Joe Beyers improved his 50+ best by two minutes. Neil Gelblum led the 50+ men runners and Bob Schmitt led the 60+ men runners. Dave Norlander turns 65 in two days. If he had been 65 today, he would have recorded the #2 65+ time for this course. Tom Zades turns 60 tomorrow. His time today would have put him #28 out of 30 on the 60+ list. The injured Dena Noble was again patiently waiting for Tom at the finish line. Jim Bordoni, Pat Rowland, and Don Packwood ably manned the finish line.

We had a lot of good performances this morning. Katy Spink was the top performer as she knocked 31 seconds off her PR to record the 2nd best-ever time by a woman runner on this course. Alas, Floyd Gerhardt sprinted by her in the last few yards to give his team a one point victory over Katy's team.
Slim Pickens scored a narrow win over Andy Lief. Jorn and Mike Toney ran with Slim and Andy for the first two miles. Then Slim and Andy pulled away and Slim got away from Andy on the final downhill.
Missy Sudan improved her PR by 19 seconds to move to #5 on the women's list and Amanda improved her PR by 32 seconds to move to #8. Jim Bordoni recorded the #7 time by a 50+ runner. Jake Roberts improved his PR by 5 1/2 minutes. Bob Schmitt led the 60+ men. Liz Nast led the 40+ ladies. Tom Warfel and Ken Noel continued to run better as they recover from their injuries. Dena Noble, despite running a PW, again beat Tom Zades. Georgia Riley led the 50+ ladies. Annette was pleased to slaughter Walt for the second week in a row. The members of the top 6 teams won boxes of Valentine candy. Thanks to Madelyn Moon, Linda Legregni, and Gary Waggoner for helping to time the race and compile the results.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Slim Pickens
There was a lot of good running this morning as 8 of the 35 runners ran PRs. It was a very close call as to who deserved the weekly trophy. Slim Pickens got it for breaking his PR by 41 seconds and recording the #3 all-time 40+ time (behind David Furst and Frank Ruona). However, a good case could be made for giving the trophy to Amanda Gerhardt as she recorded the #2 all-time best by a woman. Becki holds the course record. Katy is one second behind in 3rd place and Missy tied the 4th best time (by Sue Francis) with her 28:22. Kristina Park, who finished 10th this morning, has the 7th best-ever time. Mike Toney finished 2nd while improving his PR by 18 seconds. He is now tied with Dave Piazza for #1 on the 45+ list. Bob Schmitt improved his PR by 13 seconds to stay #6 on the 60+ list. Liz Nast knocked 27 seconds off her PR. Danny avoided a PW by one second to get a NPW (Near Personal Worst). Dave Norlander came within 37 seconds of his 60+ best (set in 1999). He turns 65 on 3/1. His time today would put him #3 on the 65+ list. Dena Noble beat Tom Zades again. Tom felt better when we told him that if he could run the same time when he turns 60 on 2/29 that it would put him #29 out of 31 on the 60+ list. Annette McPhail buried Don Packwood over the last mile. Ken Napier held back to stay with Walt. Stan added 8 minutes to his PW.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Ken Napier
Ken Napier and myself were voted into the hall of ill fame last week because we were the only ones to run PWs on the Douglass course last Saturday. Thanks to favorable handicapping, we redeemed ourselves by winning the relay this morning. Ken put us into the lead during the last leg and I held on. Ray Russell and Jim Bordoni were the stars of the morning. Ray averaged 3:27 per run on this cold morning and the aging Jim Bordoni broke his all-time PR for this workout. Liz Nast led the ladies while coming within 7 seconds of her PR.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Scott Bang
We had a very good turnout when consideration is given to the fact that the weather in the hour before the start of the race was terrible - raining moderately and very low and threatening clouds over West Valley College. So, only the real runners showed up for this run. Fortunately, there was only a light rain during the race. Scott Bang finally showed a glimpse of his former greatness by winning a Saturday road run for the first time since August 2nd. Slim Pickens led the 40+ men runners. Missy led our fast women runners, missing her PR by 6 seconds. Jim Bordoni led the 50+ men. Dave Fergus continued on his road to respectability, averaging under 6:00 per mile for a road run for the first time in quite awhile. Dick Chimenti, who retired from IBM for the last time on Friday, led the 60+ runners. Cecil Baumgartner and Sue Francis visited us for the first time since they moved to Ojai. Cecil threatened his PW. Sue jogged the course with Rich Stiller. There were no PRs this morning but we did have 2 PWs.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Andy Lief
Andy Lief disappeared from the pack early on his way to an 82-second win. Mike Toney led the 40+ runners with his 2nd place finish. Slim Pickens, still celebrating his great 54:54 run on the Cal 10 course last Sunday, cruised to a 3rd place finish. Later in the day, he ran a 4:43 mile at the Los Gatos all-comers meet. Jim Bordoni led the 50+ men. Amanda Gerhardt led a deep field of good women runners, pulling away from Missy over the last half mile. Danny Moon complained about a large pack of women runners passing him at about the 2-mile mark. Obviously, he was delusional because the times of the 6 women who finished in front of him indicated that they must have passed him shortly after they exited the college entrance. Dick Chimenti edged Bob Schmitt for 60+ honors. Christina Wilk improved her PR by 4 minutes and Joe Sigrist improved his PR by 3 minutes. Dena Noble beat Tom Zades again.

Tim Sousa ran with us for the first time in quite awhile. Dick Chimenti, after loafing for most of the relay, ran a fast last lap to escape last place. Tom Zades, who was soundly beaten by Dena Noble, ran a remarkable 141 seconds over his rating.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Jorn Jensen
Despite the very cold weather this morning, there were several very good performances. Slim Pickens and Andy ran neck-and-neck until they turned to go downhill on Fruitvale with about 3/4 of a mile to go. Then, Slim began to edge away and held on for the win. Andy knocked 17 seconds off his PR. Jorn finished 3rd while improving his PR by 37 seconds. Ray Russell won the battle of the 45+ runner with a come-from-behind win over Dave Piazza. Floyd Gerhardt improved his PR by 12 seconds. Missy Sudan ran in with Mike Toney while leading the ladies. Amanda Gerhardt and Katy Spink ran the #8 and #9 times by club women runners (but they have run 17:48 and 17:30 for this course prior to joining the club). Bob Schmitt improved his PR by 3 seconds. Marcia Morrison knocked 52 seconds off her 55+ PR. Long-time club members Danny Moon, Ken Noel, Ken Napier, and Stan DeMartinis all ran PWs.
