Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Slim Pickens

As per Jim Bordoni, here is how everyone did on this very rainy morning. Valle Vista had one 50-yard segment flooded to about a 2-foot depth. Joe Hurtado stopped for a moment to measure the depth and then had trouble regaining his momentum because of the resistance of the water. Slim improved his yearly Triangle best by 13 seconds despite the bad weather.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Carl Peterson

The 3-man Howe team started first and barely held on for the win. Slim Pickens, who is still recovering from his great 1:49:03 2nd master finish at the Clarksburg 30K 6 days ago, had the best average at 3:47 per run. Becki Kriege led the ladies with a 4:09 average. Joe Hurtado, who along with Bob Schmitt and Dave Norlander helped our 60+ team win the team title at Clarksburg, led the 60+ runners with a 4:47 average. Tom O’Connor, another Clarksburg finisher, led the 50+ men with a 4:13 average. Todd Hayes was in the hospital for two days this week with pneunomia but still managed to finish the workout with a respectable 4:35 average.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Chris Cassell

Mike Kriege stayed with Andy for about a mile before Andy started pulling away for the win. Andy got within 7 seconds of his PR. No one else came close to a PR. Becki Kriege led a good women’s field. Chris Cassell took home the weekly trophy because he broke his 50+ PR by 6 seconds.

Not a close battle for first place as Dan Peterson, who was running with us for the first time, estimated that he would average 6 minutes per run and then ran 4:22 under that estimate. Good races for 6th through 10th places as the spread between these 5 places was 21 seconds. Pity Roger Lobbes; he was matched against a fast lot of anchor runners on his last lap and fell from 5th place to 11th place during this loop. Jim Bordoni led the men with a total time of 15:14.5. Becki Kriege led the ladies with a total time of 15:15.0. All teams were rated to finish in 43 minutes even.

Tim Riley started 2nd this morning, took over the lead from Madelyn Moon during the 3rd lap, and then went on to win by about 100 yards. Although the battle for first place was not close, the runners behind were closely bunched as the next 37 runners finished within 76 seconds of each other. Bob Pickens was the star of the day as he broke his own course record by 6 seconds. He ran his last lap at 5:00 per mile pace while moving from 40th place to 6th place. Becki Kriege led the ladies as she tied her own course record at 17:38. Mark Pasos did a better job of handicapping himself than the handicap committee did as he won the predicted time contest, coming within 1.4 seconds of his prediction. 4 runners broke 17 minutes. As usual, Rich and Judy Collins did a spectacular job of hosting the race, including a very nice breakfast. Thanks to the timers and race-line officials - Tom Zades, Dimitrios Stefanidies, Becky Chimenti, Ruby Hurtado, and Stan DeMartinis. They held up very well with 37 runners finishing so closely together while Walt VanZant appeared totally stressed out.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Slim Pickens

Slim Pickens was our star this morning as he broke Tim Rostege’s 45+ course record by 6 seconds. We have had many great 45+ runners in the club. So, this was a significant accomplishment. Other good performances included Mike Kolesnik bettering his PR by 4 1/2 minutes, Uyenthi Tran knocking 74 seconds off her PR, Aaron Lee improving his PR by 33 seconds, Rob Nast improving his PR by 9 seconds, and Andy (Moon River) Williams improving his PR by 3 seconds. Danny added 49 seconds to his PW. Bob Blonder would have run in the 33s if he hadn’t gotten lost. He hadn’t run this course since November 1976. So, he can be forgiven for getting lost. Bob has a PR for this course of 21:42.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Madelyn Moon

Many of our club members were running the Dammit Run this morning. So, the turnout to run the mile was surprising. Jim Bordoni led the way with a 5:23, an 8-second improvement on his time at the Davis mile. Other improvements included Christina Wilk at 10 seconds better than last year and Jake White at 8 seconds better than his run last month. Madelyn took home the trophy for her efforts in timing the mile and efforts in the 36 x 200 relay.

Uyenthi ran 60 seconds under her rating to lead her team to victory. The McPhail team started first and held the lead until the final lap when Jake White finally put his team into first. Slim Pickens had the best average for the day (1:46), finishing with a 1:36 on his final run. Becki Kriege, Don Packwood, and Tom Warfel did an excellent job of organizing and timing the relay.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Ken Noel

We made the big change this morning from the Farwell-Herriman course to the Farwell-Horseshoe course. The distance has stayed the same at 4.68 miles but we chopped out the Hwy 9/Herriman segment so that we could avoid the stop signal at Saratoga and Hwy 9 and we added the Horseshoe segment and started 117 feet back of the normal starting line. As can be seen, Bob Pickens was the first winner for this course. Missy Sudan led the ladies. Jim Bordoni led the 50+ men and Bob Schmitt led the ten 60+ runners. Brian Conroy missed his PR by 0.07 seconds. Kelly Emo ran the course for the first time as a 40+ runner, moving into #6 on that list just 3 seconds in front of Antonina Ettare and 10 seconds behind Marian Richards. Chris Cassell improved his 50+ best by one second. Tom Zades knocked 45 seconds off his 60+ best. Van Zant improved his 65+ best by 41 seconds, moving to within 6 minutes of second to last place on that list. Ken Noel was given the weekly trophy because of his persistence in the face of several injuries, which has now started to result in good performances.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Tom Zades

John Mintz ran with us for the first time this morning and scored an easy win. No overall PRs this morning. Brian Low and Tom Zades improved their 60+ PRs by 16 and 53 seconds. Dino completed all of the Saturday courses and moved into 2nd place in the B division of the Cum Sat contest, 3 1/2 minutes behind Tom O’Connor. Small turnout was probably due to runners saving themselves for the Grand Prix mile race tomorrow in Davis.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Slim Pickens

Chris Cassell jumped to an early lead in the first heat but was closely followed by Rich Hahn, Kelly Emo, and Dave Norlander as they ran their first lap in 90. Kelly then surged into the lead, passing two laps in 3:05 with Dave and Rich about 10 yards back. Chris dropped out of contention during the second lap. Kelly still held the lead after 3 laps (4:42) with Rich right on her shoulder and Dave 10 yards back. Rich showed his superior speed during the last lap (90 seconds) to pass Kelly and pull away for the win. Dave closed on Kelly but was not fast enough to catch her. Ken Noel ran his best track mile since he ran 6:17 in 2001. Tom Zades missed cracking 7:00 but ran his best track mile since his 6:47 in 2002. Betty Root ran her first track mile since 2001.

Slim Pickens ran a superb mile in the second heat. He started with a 69, dropped to a 71 on the second lap, improved to 70 on the third lap, and finished with a 69. As can be seen, nobody was near him. Dimitrios ran a 1320 in 3:51 in this heat as that is all that he intended to run. Jeff and Andy battled all of the way for second as they ran 79, 80, 79, and 78.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Dena Noble & Tom Zades

Tom Warfel directed this workout. He decided to give the trophy to Dena and Tom because the first place team finished so far in front. Later, he disco vered why the Conroy team finished so far in front. Due to a rare error by Tom, they were allowed to start at 7:30 rather than 8:45. If they had started at the correct time, they would have finished at 25:50. All teams were rated to finish at 25:45.

Very easy win for Mike as he recorded the #7 best-ever time by a 45+ runner. Becki led the ladies with her best time on this course since she ran 17:42 eight years ago. Jeff Bedolla was the only one to PR as he shaved 5 seconds off his best time. Dimitrios missed his PR by one second. Chris Cassell knocked 68 seconds off his 50+ best. Damon Lease, who moved away from the Bay Area about 9 years ago and who will be running the Western States 100 next weekend, ran this course for the first time since 2000 and was able to improve his time from then by 7 seconds.

Phantom Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Bill Dunn

Bill Dunn took advantage of a rare Saturday day-off from the post office to be the top finisher this morning. His time tied him for #9 on the 55+ list, just 14 seconds behind the #5 time. Mike Kriege led the 12 finishers for the Farwell course with the #22 45+ time. Farwell was the most popular course that was run this morning. Douglas followed with 10 finishers. Georgia Riley broke the women 60+ course record (held by her) by 2 seconds. Tom Zades was pleased that he improved his 60+ best for Valle Vista by 64 seconds. This moved him to #4 from the bottom of the 60+ list. Walt Van Zant improved his 65+ best for Valle Vista by 14 seconds to move to within 104 seconds of extricating himself from last place on the 65+ List. Jim Wurm lost about 5 minutes when he had to take a bathroom break near the end of the Douglas run. Andy Williams, Slim Pickens, and Al Murray lost about 20 seconds when they mistakenly turned up Chester for about 50 yards while running down Sobey Rd.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Scott Bang

Easy win for Scott this morning on this difficult course. Good run for Dimitrios as he knocked 4 seconds off his PR, which was set more than 4 years ago. Chris Blue recorded the #6 time by a 55+ woman runner. Tom O’Connor had to drop out due to a blister. Despite this valid excuse for dropping out, the DNF puts Tom in contention to win the brown bag award. Norm tripped and took a bad fall on Allendale but seemed to be okay laying next to his car when we left for breakfast.

** Given a soft rating because he said that he was not in top form but
he then mistakenly ran the full campus loop rather than the tennis
    court loop.
*** Resting for a race on Monday. Said that he would run 5:00 per loop.

All teams were rated to finish in 44:00. Several teams ran well under that time. Ray Russell ran 3:26 on his last run as he had the best average at 3:38. Liz Nast led the ladies with a 4:18 average. The Gelblum team would have won but Neil mistakenly ran a full campus loop on his first run rather than just running around the tennis courts.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Slim Pickens

Slim Pickens started fast and went on to win by nearly two minutes. There was a good 4-way battle for second place as the runners entered the campus. Scott Bang’s superior speed got him the second place finish. Joe Hurtado timed his crossing of Fruitvale Ave with 300 yards to go perfectly. Bob Schmitt and Dino Delyani slowed as they crossed Fruitvale to avoid a passing car. Joe, who trailed them by about 10 yards, timed his crossing just right and sprinted by them and then held on for his victory. Mike Kolesnik donated a free parking permit to the best performer of the day – Slim Pickens.

Highlights for the day included a 104-second PR by Aaron, Jim Wurm missing his PR by exactly 17 minutes, Jerry Lewis becoming the 6th 70+ club member to run this course, and Georgia Riley knocking 23 seconds off her own club 60+ record for this course. Danny and Madelyn Moon and Slim Pickens did the timing. Slim brought out the new perpetual trophy for the Racer of the Year winner for all to see.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner = Johanna Wans

Johanna Wans took home the trophy this morning as she tied with Andy Williams for the best average per run (77 seconds) and she brought her team from 2nd place to the win on the last lap of the race. Good race between the teams who started last – the Russell and Williams teams. The Williams team pulled out to a 70-yard lead before the Russell team slowly pulled back into the hunt and then whizzed by them on the 15th lap. Sue Francis came by to visit us from the Southland. Good timing job by Jim Bordoni, Don Packwood, and Tom O’Connor.

Rich Hahn improved his 40+ PR by 32 seconds. Becki Kriege was running close behind Jeff Rohrer with a mile and a quarter to go when she took a bad fall on the downhill dirt path section. Lousy conditions this morning – rain, gigantic puddles, and a lot of auto and foot traffic due to a high school track meet. So, we changed the workout to full tennis court loops and just threw teams together without attempting to fairly handicap the teams. The Conroy and Fergus teams started last and finished 1st and 2nd. Brian Conroy had the best cumulative time at 15:59 and Ken Noel showed the most improvement from the last time that we ran this workout on 2/5/05.

Christina Wilk and Helen Wong had super days this morning to easily win the workout. Christina improved her best time for this workout by nearly 3 minutes as she averaged 9:19 per run. Helen, who has a best time for this workout of 19:37 and has been running slowly lately due to lack of conditioning, ran an excellent 20:20 to beat her rating by 40 seconds. Danny Moon added 97 seconds to his PW. Ray Russell, who said that his recent training indicated that he would run slowly, then went out and proved that he is out of condition with a slow (for him) 18:28 performance. However, he did somewhat redeem himself at the end to beat out the three teams near him. Tom O’Connor and Jim Wurm did a good job at the finish line.

Liz Nast, who is #5 on the women’s 40+ list, led the ladies while running 32 seconds over her PR. Tom Zades was pleased to improve his 60+ best, which allowed him to jump over Rich Collins and Bill Buckley into 25th place on the 60+ list. Tom Warfel, who is recovering from an injury, ran an impressive 16:37 over his PR. Tim Riley, learning to run on an artificial hip, was 13:17 over his PR. Rich Collins was 13:09 over his PR. Ken Noel was 12:33 over his PR. Norm Saucedo was 9:58 over his PR. And, Bill Flodberg was a paltry 8:47 over his PR but this put him #6 on the 70+ list. Congratulations to these six inspiring runners. Good timing job by Jim Bordoni and Danny Moon. Thanks to Tom O’Connor for traffic control at the Fruitvale crossing.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Jeff Rohrer

Mike Kriege ran with Jeff Rohrer and Slim Pickens for the first 2 1/2 miles before speeding away for his 3rd Saturday win of the year. Becki led the ladies with another good run. Todd Hayes led the 50+ men and Bob Schmitt led the 60+ men. Jeff Rohrer took home the weekly trophy for the 2nd time this year as he improved his 45+ PR by 44 seconds. It was a tough call between Jeff and John Peterson as to who should get the weekly trophy. John improved his all-time PR by 55 seconds, putting him #5 on the 65+ list. Walt Van Zant, who normally warns all runners to not cross Saratoga when the light is red and a cop is in sight, was himself nabbed by the cops for walking against a red light (I thought that I was trying to run).

Stan DeMartinis started the last lap with the lead and held it until the swimming pool (less than a quarter mile from the finish) before Jeff and Joe passed him. Danny Moon passed the staggering Stan 30 yards from the finish with a big sprint to push Stan into 8th place. Dennis Kurtis had the best average at 3:35.8. Helen Wong led the ladies at 4:30.0. Bob Schmitt showed signs of recovering his conditioning after his recent hernia surgery as he averaged 4:15.3 per run. Tom Zades, after two spectacular performances, was given the honor of running with Dena Noble. He couldn’t handle the pressure and tanked with 5:12 and 5:16 on his last two runs. Don Packwood should have been given an Oscar for his performance. He claimed that he would run about 23:20 for the workout, cried for 10 minutes when told that he would be rated at 23:00, and then ran 21:08. Dave McIntyre loafed in preparation for his half marathon race tomorrow. Michael Park improved 61 seconds on his time for this workout in November. It was nice to see Jim Myers for the first time in quite a while. And, he even brought along his twin stomach.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner -Dennis Kurtis

This was a perfect day for a 5K on the track - a bright, sunny sky with a cool temperature. Mike Kriege and Bob Pickens led most of the way with Mike getting the edge at the finish. Jake Roberts suggested to Becki on the starting line that she, himself, and others run as a group but Becki declined with the comment that it's “every man for himself." So, Jake took off fast and ran with the leaders for the first couple of laps before falling back. Dennis Kurtis ran a good race and was the first 50+ finisher. Becki Kriege, who led the ladies, also ran a great race, missing her PR by 30 seconds, which she set 17 years ago while in college. 82-year-old Stan DeMartinis made a good effort to run an entire 5K but had to drop out with 7 laps to go. Tom Zades lost to Kat by one second but did beat his arch rival, Dena, for the 2nd time this year in 2 tries. However, Dena insisted that Tom should be tested for drugs as one of her friends had seen him hanging around the Balco lab. Further, she noted that she will soon begin training and that Tom's victories will soon become aberrations in their racing history. We had many timers for this event, including Dimitrios Stefanidis, Don Packwood, Tom O'Connor, Tom Warfel, and Madelyn Moon.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Christina Wilk

A lot of good performances on this foggy morning. Mike Kriege ran with a group of 5 until they got out of the trail area and then accelerated away to an easy win as he improved his PR by 29 seconds while moving to #13 on the 45+ list. Becki led the ladies. Tough decision on who to give the trophy to as both Jake Roberts and Christina Wilk ran very well. We gave Christina the trophy because she improved her PR by 54 seconds. Tom Zades beat Dena Noble in their first head-to-head race of the year. However, Dena alleged that she was loafing. Kat Powell recorded the #9 time by a 50+ woman runner. Georgia Riley broke the women's 60+ record for this course. So, she now holds all of the women's 60+ course records. Tim Riley, who is recovering from a hip-replacement surgery, ran with us for the first time in a long time. Ken Noel and Norm Saucedo claimed that they would have run faster if they hadn't stopped at the library to check out a book.

Cold morning (35 degrees when we arrived). Jake Roberts took the early lead and was closely followed by Scott Bang and Jeff Rohrer. Small turnout on this cold and rainy morning. Kari and Dwight Cornwell visited us from Colorado, running to an easy win. Most runners were given soft ratings for a variety of reasons (primarily because they were racing tomorrow). The first team to finish with normal ratings was the Delyani and Goldman team. So, Mark Goldman was given the weekly trophy. Bob Pickens led the guys with a 5:30 average and Kari Cornell led the ladies with a 6:23 average.
