Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Carl Petersen

35 club members showed up to run on this cold morning (mid 30s) and many were rewarded with good results. Mike Kriege’s, Becki Kriege’s, Dino Delyani’s, and Chris Blue’s times gave them the leads in the Cum Sat contest in the elite, A, B, and E divisions. And, since this was the last Saturday run of the year, they are the winners of these divisions for 2006 (unless they also won the Racer of the Year contest for these divisions). Georgia Riley improved her own women’s 60+ record for this course by 2 1/2 minutes. Roger Lobbes improved his PR by 3 minutes. Chris Blue improved her 55+ PR by 64 seconds to move to #3 on that list. Jim Howe ran the #3 time for a 60+ runner, 3 seconds behind Bob Schmitt and 3 seconds in front of Ken Napier. Becki recorded the #2 time by a woman 40+ runner. Bob Schmitt recorded the #9 time by a 65+ runner. 68-year-old Carl Petersen improved his PR by 8 seconds. Don Packwood improved his race walking best for this course by 20 seconds as he averaged 11:18 per mile. 65+ runners Tim Rostege, Joe Hurtado, and Dave Norlander had a close race on the Douglas course, finishing within 6 seconds of each other.

Phantom Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Amanda Gerhardt

This was not a morning for fast times as the temperature was in the high 30s. Still, there were many good performances. Andy and Mike both broke 17 minutes as Andy edged Mike for the win. Amanda ran great for the second week in a row. She ran very fast at the Xmas Relays on last Sunday and then came back to break her Valle Vista PR by 37 seconds while moving to #3 on the all-time women's list behind Becki and Kristina. Jeff Candella ran the #20 best for a 50+ runner and we've had many super 50+ runners run this course, headed by Tim Rostege at 16:35 and Bill Meinhardt at 16:42. Becki improved her own 40+ course record by 10 seconds. Johanna improved her PR by 96 seconds to move to #15 on the women's open list. Jim Howe tied Gene Antonides for #7 on the 60+ list. Tim Rostege knocked 27 seconds off his 65+ best. Kat improved her 55+ PR by 4 seconds. And, Stan improved his seasonal best for this course by 11 seconds.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Tom O’Connor

Tom O’Connor hasn’t run this course in 18 months. But, has improved so much since that time that he was able to loaf in preparation for a race tomorrow and still win today while knocking 41 seconds off his previous PR. Kristina led the ladies with her second place finish. Dino’s 7-second PR was good enough to jump him over 4 runners on the all-time 45+ list. Tim Rostege continued to run well as he improved by 13 seconds on his 65+ PR. He also took a 2-minute lead over Dave Norlander in the C division of the Cum Sat contest. Tom Warfel’s time put him into second place in the D divison of the Cum Sat contest, 70 seconds in front of Brian Low. As of now, Carl Peterson leads the D division in both the Racer of the Year contest and the Cum Sat contest. So, whoever finishes second in the Cum Sat contest will win the Cum Sat plaque. Chris Blue improved her 55+ best by 156 seconds to leap over 4 runners and move into fourth place on the women’s 55+ list for this course. Georgia Riley improved her own 60+ women’s course record by 50 seconds. The second best-ever 60+ time is 6 minutes behind Georgia. Never saw Ray Russell in the finish area. Possibly, he had a bummer run and just decided to go home.

Good battle for first place this morning between Scott, Mike, and Bjorn. Mike took the early lead and held it for about 1 1/2 miles. Scott and Bjorn then ran together in the lead until Scott surged with 3/4 of a mile to go and pulled away to a 25-second win. Becki broke Sue Francis’ 40+ course record (set 13 years ago) by 69 seconds. It was the first time that Becki broke 21:00 in 16 years (although she had three 21 flat times since 1990). Bjorn improved his PR by 62 seconds. Mike Kriege knocked three seconds off his 45+ PR to move into a tie with Danny Moon on the all-time 45+ list. Kristina Park’s time put her into first place of the A division in the Cumulative Saturday contest. Tim Rostege improved his 65+ best by nearly 4 minutes to move to #7 on the 65+ list. Rich Stiller improved his 60+ PR by 54 seconds. Someone using Jake White’s name ran 29 seconds over 30 minutes. Stan DeMartinis ran 3 minutes faster than the last time that he ran this course.

* Self rated.

The Bedolla team probably ran 25 laps instead of 24 laps. Helen wong ran 3 of the laps. They apparently got confused during the 5th leg by running a lap short and then compensated for the error by running two extra laps.

Phantom Dick Barrett Trophy Winners – Todd Hayes and Brian Conroy

The Conroy team started 3rd from last, took the lead during the 7th leg, and then went on to win by over a straightaway. Slim Pickens and Scott Bang led the guys with averages of 3:48 and 3:51. The gals were led by Becki Kriege and Missy Sudan at 4:13 and 4:17. All teams except the Bedolla team ran 24 laps. The Bedolla team probably ran 25 laps. A few other teams, due to confusion or a teammate in the bathroom, mixed up their runs with some 4-lapppers, 2-lappers, and 1-lappers.

This was a great day for 1600s on the track. As can be seen, 20 out of 22 runners ran under their rating. This was Amiee Blum's first 1600 workout with us and she ran much better then expected. Great job. Matt Kriege ran very well, averaging 6:36 per run. His dad will have to train hard to stay in front of him. Kristina Park lead the ladies with a total time of 17:05 with Becki Kriege at 17:10 and Missy Sudan at 17:31. Brian Conroy led the men with a 17:34. Good job by the timers, which is not an easy task as they can attest to.

The White team started first and held the lead through just before the end of the second 1200. Helen Wong then ran a 3:07 to give Dimitrios a slight lead going into the final 400. He then lengthened the lead to about 70 meters at the finish. Jim Bordoni led all of the men with splits of 2:35 for the 800, 5:38 for the 1600, 4:09 for the 1200, and a finishing 400 of 70. Helen Wong showed remarkable improvement over a couple of weeks ago when she ran 108 seconds over her rating to lead her team to a last place finish. This week she ran 63 seconds under her rating while averging 99 seconds per lap. Good timing job by Carl Petersen, Roger Lobbes, and Kelly emo. Danny Moon put the teams together. All teams were rated to finish in 38:45.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Joe Hurtado

The Bedolla team won easity but we did not give them the weekly trophy because they were given soft ratings because Kelly Emo said that she would run slow in preparation for a race tomorrow and we had insufficient information about Kim Matthews. Joe Hurtado was given the weekly trophy because of his great come-from-behind sprint to get Carl Petersen at the end. He finished a few inches in front of Carl.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – McKayla Plank

Several good performances on this mildly warmish morning. Slim Pickens ran to an easy win while recording the #6 45+ time for this course. McKayla improved her PR by 3 minutes while moving into a 7th place tie with Joann Dahlkoetter on the all-time women’s open list. Amanda Gerhardt missed her PR by 17 seconds just 5 days after running a hard 10K. Brian Conroy and Aaron Lee improved their PRS by a little over one minute each. Joe Hurtado recorded the #3 time by a 65+ runner. Rich Stiller improved his 60+ PR by two minutes. Uyenthi Tran got lost, turning left and running up Chester for awhile before turning back to Sobey Rd. Tom Warfel had to drop out due to a calf pull. Don Packwood walked the entire course at a blazing 12+ minutes per mile. Thanks to Slim for setting up a water stop at the end of Chester (just before the turn onto Allendale).

N.B. The McPhail team was rated to run 51:00. Rather than start them and then wait for 10:15 for the next team to start, they were started with the Noel team and then 10:15 was added to the times of all other teams to show where the McPhail team would have finished if given their correct starting time.

Close win for the Fergus team on this cool and windy morning. Andy Williams, who cried when he was rated at 15:00 instead of at his estimate of 15:30 (he finally agreed to a 15:15 rating) led the way with a total time of 14:54. Kelly Emo led the ladies at 16:56. Brian Conroy led the 50+ runners at 15:34. Dave Norlander led the 60+ runners at 18:07. 83-year-old Stan DeMartinis ran 85 seconds faster than the last time that he ran this workout. Neil Gelblum asked to be rated at 21:20 and then ran 17:24. He sounded so sincere in his request that he may have missed his true calling in life – becoming a politician.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Carol Mendoza

Thanks to the great efforts of Tom O'Connor and Danny Moon at the 200 mark and Todd Hayes and Roger Lobbes at the finish line, we were able to get all 36 splits for all 7 teams.

Carol Mendoza, who averaged 37 seconds per run, had an outstanding day as she led her team to an easy win. The Krey and Benham team duked it out for the first 12 1/2 laps before the Krey team finally pulled away to finish second. The Lee and Bordoni team finished third and fourth as they needed about one more lap of running to get up to second place. Scott Bang, Slim Pickens, Rob Nast, and Jim Bordoni had the fastest splits of the day as their averages ranged from the mid 32s to the high 33s.

Ken Noel improved his time by 2 1/2 minutes but got nothing for his efforts as his candy for being a member of the G team was erroneously given to Chris Blue. Ken said that he did not mind but laid 300 feet of rubber when driving from the scene of the crime. Jim Myers and Georgia Riley improved by 2 minutes. Thanks to Tom Warfel for marking the course and to Jim Bordoni, Aaron Lee, and Madelyn Moon for helping at the finish line.

Good running conditions this morning. A little drizzle that stopped just before the start of our run. Temperature was in the mid to low 50s. The Pala team took the lead during the 7th lap and cruised to an easy win. The real battle was for 2nd place. The golden oldies trio of Bill Dunn, Jim Bordoni, and Neil Gelblum started the last lap within 5 seconds of each other. Jim had the best last lap split at 3:37 but Bill's 3:40 was good enough to hold on for the 2nd place finish. Jim and Bill had the best averages at 3:39 and 3:45. Carol Mendoza led the ladies with a 4:09 average. Bob Schmitt edged Dick Chimenti for 60+ honors by 1 second. Stan DeMartinis and Madelyn Moon ran 2 intervals each as Jim Bordoni's partner. Stan missed his rating by 115 seconds but Madelyn offset that by running 126 seconds under her rating.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Don Packwood

It was cold this morning (45 degrees), which is probably not conducive to running fast times for a 5K. But, there were a lot of fast times anyway. Slim led the way again as he weaved his way around the many runners on his was to a 16:52. Newly-turned 50+ runner, Tom O’Connor, continued to run very well as he sped to a sub-18:00 minute performance. Becki, who had not been running well lately, ran 18:08 to lead the ladies. She led a pack of male runners for much of the race but wasn’t strong enough to break away from them. 53-year-old Jim Bordoni, who had dropped off somewhat this past year, had probably his best race in a year with his 18:17 finish. Aaron Lee improved 1 minute on his 5K time from last February. Bob Schmitt led the 60+ runners. Joe Hurtado was the second 60+ finisher as he equaled his track 5K best from last year at 20:38. Kelly Emo was the top 40+ woman finisher, bettering her 2005 track best by 43 seconds. Dave McIntyre has been doing a lot of distance running lately in preparation for the half marathon next week. As a result, he said that he felt very strong while running 20:30 – 1 1/2 minutes better than last year. Tim Rostege ran 3 seconds faster than last year to beat fellow 65+ runners Dave Norlander and Carl Petersen by 3 and 44 seconds. Georgia Riley beat her other 60+ woman competitor – Madelyn Moon. Don Packwood ran the first mile and then walked the last 2 miles before we started our run and then combined with Danny Moon and Stan DeMartinis to help at the finish line. Danny started the stop watch, ran 6 1/2 laps before collapsing on the track and claiming that he stopped only because he wanted to help Don and Stan with the timing. I considered his story for about 1 second before deciding that this definitely counted as a DNF.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Tim Riley

Not a great morning for running. Light rain and it was slick from the mud in the double-gate area. However, there were numerous good performances. Slim Pickens won while recording the #6 time by a 45+ runner for this course. This is a notable accomplishment as the 6 runners in front of him – Dave Rivera, Bill Meinhardt, Tim Rostege, Bill Dunn, and David Furst – were all outstanding 45+ runners. Tom O’Connor knocked 40 seconds off his PR with a time that tied Joe Hurtado for #15 on the 50+ list. 66 club 50+ runners have run this course. Nory McAllister continued to run PRs with a 16-second improvement this time. Missy Sudan led all of the ladies. Bill Dunn improved his 55+ PR by 4 seconds. This allowed him to jump over Danny Moon and Rod MacKinlay on the 55+ list into 8th place, one second behind Norm Saucedo. Todd Hayes ran the #15 time by a 55+ runner. Brian Conroy missed his PR by 6 seconds. Joe Hurtado, who turned 65 last Sunday, started running like a 65+ runner. He led the 8 65+ runners who ran today, moving to #4 on that list. Rim Rostege recorded the #8 time by a 65+ runner and Carl Petersen ran the #10 time. Tim Riley improved his 65+ best by 3 1/2 minutes.

Just the real runners ran this morning as we were hit with intermittent showers and had to run on a rain-slickened track. The star of the day was Slim Pickens, who averaged 5:08 per run under the adverse conditions. His partner, Roger Lobbes showed remarkable improvement by running 74 seconds under his rating. Only five of the twenty-two runners ran under their rating. Rob Nast had the second best average at 5:32. Kelly Emo led the ladies with a 6:34 average. Tom O’Connor led the 50+ runners with a 5:56 average. Bob Schmitt was the top 60+ runner at 6:32 per run. Bob Schmitt had a great race with Joe Hurtado for 7th place over the last 200 meters. Bob had passed Joe after making up 80 meters on him but then had to hold on to beat Joe by a couple of inches. Rich Stiller, rather than risk an injury on the slick track, averaged 4:13.5 for four runs with a 4-minute rest between runs on the tennis court loop.

Don Packwood, after completing his walk, helped Jim Bordoni and Tom O’Connor time the run.
