We had balmy weather conditions this morning (mid 40s). I was even tempted to run without my shirt but decided against it after being threatened by several club members. Al Murray finished first but the star of the day was Norry McAllister, who led the Short Six course runners while knocking 81 seconds off his PR. Bill Dunn recorded the #2 best-ever time for a 60+ runner for the Short Six course behind Ulrich Kaempf’s 36:45 record. Paul Rodriguez PRd by 20 seconds for the Triangle course. Georgia intended to run the Farwell/H course but got confused and turned onto Douglas to get back to the finish line. So, she in effect ran a long Farwell course. Thanks to Jim Bordoni and Danny Moon for doing the timing.

Very cold this morning (32 degrees when we started our warmup and not much warmer when we started the race). Despite these cold conditions, we had 5 PRs and a couple of age-group PRs. Mike Bordoni led all of the guys and Kristina Park led all of the ladies. Carl Petersen broke Dave Valles' 70+ course record, set 12 years ago, by 4 seconds. Jim Howe tied Ken Napier for #3 on the men's 60+ list. Marian Richard recorded the #7 time for 45+ women. Pauline Beatty recorded the #10 time by a 50+ woman. Norry McAllister continued to run well as his time tied for #23 with Todd Hayes on the men's 50+ list. This is a significant accomplishment as many top 50+ runners have run this course.
Dena Noble was pleased with her hard effort as she missed her 45+ PR by a mere 33 seconds. She phoned me later from the hospital to explain that she overextended herself in her courageous attempt (her terminology) to stay close to Chris Blue. She hastened to explain that if Tom Zades had been there, that she would have drubbed him (Editor's note -- Tom is presently confined to a wheelchair due to numerous injuries, including a tendonitis of the wrist from shoveling food into his mouth too quickly while eating at Carrow's, incurred during his brief, nondescript running career).

This was a cold morning to for running (40 degrees or less) but there were several good performances. John Weru and Mike Bordoni ran the Farwell/H course in 26:16 and 26:37. This was a 25-second PR for Mike. Norry PRd by 68 seconds on the same course. And, Paul Rodriguez improved his Triangle course PR by 15 seconds. The best performance of the day was by Bill Dunn as he broke Norm Saucedo's 60+ record for the Douglas course by 13 seconds.

Very cold weather this morning (35 degrees), which was not conducive to fast running on a short course. Scott Bang scored his third consecutive Saturday road run win. Uyenthi ran easy but still PRd by 21 seconds. Oldie Brian Conroy improved his PR that he set 3+ years ago by one second. Dino Delyani missed his overall PR by 9 seconds but improved his 50+ PR by 33 seconds. Don Packwood missed his race walking PR for this course by 4 seconds. Ken Noel had by far his best Saturday road run of the year.

Scott ran his fastest time on this course since he PRd with a 25:55 8 years ago to lead all runners this morning. Kat Powell knocked 4 minutes off her PR, set 3 years ago, to move to #4 on the women's 55+ list. Dave Norlander, who has run this course many times over the years, went mentally to sleep and ran right by the college entrance about a quarter mile from the end of the race. He realized the error of his ways about 100 yards later and got back on course in time to nip Kat.

Small turnout but a couple of outstanding performances this morning. Becki Kriege, broke the women's 40+ record, set by Sue Francis 14 years ago, by 51 seconds. Bill Dunn broke the men's 60+ course record, set by Ralph Poole 8 years ago, by 5 seconds. Norry and Frank PRd and Don Packwood knocked 25 seconds off his race walking best for this course. Paul Taylor took a step toward winning the brown-bag award when he dropped out due to an achilles injury.

Two of the original founders of the club, Bob Blonder and Len Edholm, came to watch us today. They along with Carl Petersen did an excellent timing job. The race was fairly close as Dave McIntyre came from 3rd place to 1st during his final leg. The workout was unique in that not a single runner broke 6 minutes. It is amazing to see the depths to which some of us have sunk.

Jim Myers passed Chris Blue about 100 yards into the last run and went on for the win. Ray Russell had the best cumulative time at 10:43. We last ran this relay on 3/24/07 and 8 our of the 13 times ran under par, some by whopping amounts. So, this time I was a little harsher on the ratings and we had the reverse problem as 4 out of 6 times ran over par (44:00), most by significant amounts. I tried to rate the runners a little slower than their estimated 8 by 400 splits as the distance is about the same for both workouts - 2 miles. It did not work.

Scott Bang sprinted the last 100 meters to get under 20:00, winning by over two minutes. Five PRs with Steve making the biggest improvement at 34 seconds. Three runners got lost. Alp ran the popular 4.19-mile course as he missed the Douglas turnoff and ran down to the library at Saratoga and Fruitvale. Verna Rodriguez and Ed Singleton were tricked by the "Trail" sign in the double-gate area. The city built a new trail in the double-gate area that leads out to Los Gatos/Saratoga Road. Ed and Verna had never run this course before. So, when they saw the "Trail" sign that pointed out to Los Gatos/Saratoga Road, they followed the sign. Verna eventually turned around but Ed went all of the way out to the road and then came back via Farwell. Don Packwood improved his race walking best for this course by 29 seconds. Danny Moon, Madelyn Moon, Paul Rodriguez, Stan DeMartinis, and Mike Kolesnik did a great job of helping with the run.

Joe Johnson, who won the worst-performance award last year, won this morning by about 40 yards over Danny Moon. Mike Bordoni had the fastest scratch time at 16:29. Missy Sudan had the fastest scratch time for the ladies, nipping Kristina Park by 0.7 seconds. Jorn won the predicted time contest, missing his predicted time by 0.4 seconds. Don Packwood, Ed Singleton, and Walt Van Zant started the last lap in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place and then finished 31st, 38th, and 36th. Don had the lead with about 200 yards to go and still finished 31st. He averaged 10:49 per mile while race walking the entire race.
Thanks to Rich & Judy Collins for letting us use their house as the starting point for the race and again preparing a great breakfast. Mark Winitz, Fran Winitz, Aaron Lee, Uyenthi Tran, Joe Hurtado, John Peterson, and Paul Rodriguez did a superb job at the finish line.

53-year-old Dennis Kurtis ran to an easy win this morning while posting the 3rd best-ever time on this course by a 50+ runner. The #1 and #2 times of 25:50 and 26:19 were run by Tim Rostege and Bill Meinhardt in the same race on 5/18/91. The times were so fast in that race that Bill finished only 8th. Missy Sudan led the ladies this morning. Joe Hurtado led a field of 9 60+ men runners, improving his 65+ best by 23 seconds. Bjorn had the biggest PR - 107 seconds - followed by Dave McIntyre at 68 seconds. Helen Wong missed her PR by 31 seconds but said that she was not running all out. Members of the handicap committee should remember this comment when rating her for our annual handicap race on 8/18.

It was slightly warmish this morning. Despite the weather conditions, there were many good performances. Mike Bordoni ran at moderate effort while saving himself for the Wharf to Wharf race tomorrow but still won easily and came within 15 seconds of his PR. Jeff Candello led the 50+ runners. Dave McIntyre ran his 5th consecutive PR. Steve Chamberlin PRd by 12 seconds. Helen Wong ran her best time on this course in 3 1/2 years. Jeff Bedolla ran his best for this course in 2 years. Liz Nast posted the 8th best-ever women's 45+ time for this course. Rosa Hellen knocked 70 seconds off her PR. John Peterson ran his best time on this course since his knee surgery and was very pleased to dip under 8-minutes per mile pace. Kat Powell improved her 55+ PR by 39 seconds to move to #6 on the women's 55+ list. Al Murray did a good job of protecting the runners as they crossed Fruitvale and the finish line crew of Jim Bordoni, Becki Kriege, Chris Blue, and Georgia Riley did an excellent job.

Jorn Jensen ran a Saturday road run with us for the first time since May of 2006 and cruised to the win, bettering his 2006 Triangle PR by 27 seconds. Kristina Park led the ladies. Dave McIntyre continued to run well with a 69 second improvement on his PR. Uyenthi improved her PR by 34 seconds and hubby, Aaron, improved his PR by 15 seconds. Andy Williams also improved his PR by 15 seconds. Chris Blue improved her 55+ PR by 50 seconds and Kat improved her 55+ best by 23 seconds. 76-year-old Ed Singleton ran his best ever Saturday road run (based upon the 10K equivalent chart prepared by Jim Whalen).

Race #1 was a good 5-man battle for the first 3 laps until Jeff pulled away for an easy win. Bill Dunn battled Art Mitchum in the 2nd race through 3 laps with Art Mitchum leading. But, the effort proved too difficult for Art and he faded to 5th place during the last lap while Bill went on for the win. Mike Bordoni scored an easy win during the last race. Rob missed breaking 5:00 by a fraction and timed himself in 4:59.7.

Many club members were running in the Shriner's 8K this morning and the Corporate Regional meet later today. So, we had a light turnout. Rob improved his PR by 8 seconds while running to an easy win. Dave McIntyre improved his PR by 8 seconds and Paul Rodriguez improved his PR by 57 seconds. Chris Blue moved to #3 on the women's 55+ list with a 37-second improvement on her 55+ best. Rich Collins knocked 17 seconds off his 60+ best. Tom Warfel was able to complete the run despite having spent a couple of nights in the hospital this week. Kristina pushed her baby in a baby jogger all of the way up the Fruitvale hill and still had enough strength to finish in the top half of the field.

There were a lot of good performances this morning. Dennis Kurtis ran the #4 time by a 50+ runner on the Valle Vista course (behind Tim Rostege, Bill Meinhardt, and Roger Bryan). Andy Williams continued his good running by improving his PR by 19 seconds. Missy Sudan ran her best time on the Valle Vista course in over three years and moved into first place of the A division of the Cum Sat contest. Bill Dunn, who is less than two months from turning 60, improved his 55+ PR for Valle Vista by 9 seconds. His time was also 11 seconds under the 60+ Valle Vista course record. Jim Howe recorded the #4 time by a 60+ runner on the Valle Vista course. Aaron Lee missed his Valle Vista PR by 4 seconds. Carl Petersen improved his 65+ PR by 23 seconds to move into #9 on the 65+ list and also move into the Cum Sat contest lead for the C division. Uyenthi Tran improved her Valle Vista PR by 11 seconds. Good morning for racing as we had cool weather. Mike Bordoni ran easy because he had a race the next day but still PRd by 36 seconds while breaking the family record for this course by 15 seconds. Aaron Lee improved his PR by 20 seconds. Tim Rostege improved his 65+ best by 27 seconds. Paul Rodriguez took home the weekly trophy because he improved his PR by a whopping 2 1/2 minutes. Buby improved her 65+ course record by 14 minutes. Norry missed his PR by 1 second. Dino missed his PR by 4 seconds. Good battle between Carl Petersen and Tim Rostege for 65+ honors as Carl managed to get away from Tim during the last 100 yards to win by 2 seconds. Steve Chamberlin got lost as he missed the turn onto Sobey Rd from Quito. We're not sure how far he ran.

Dave Norlander put his team into the lead with about 300 yards to go on the second to last loop and then Dino Delyani, who PRd by 41 seconds, lengthened the lead as their team won by about 80 yards. Mike Krey PRd by 17 seconds. Jim Bordoni did not PR but at the advanced age of 54 missed his PR by only 1 second. Ray Russed ran a great 3:27 on his last loop to bring his team from last place to 8th. Chris Blue did not PR but still ran her best time for this workout in over 4 years. Tim Riley ran the same exact time as he did the last time we ran this workout in February - 23:04.

A lot of good running this morning - 8 PRs out of 36 runners. Paul Rodriguez PRd by 3 minutes. Dave McIntyre improved by 40 seconds. Dennis Kurtis recorded the #6 time by a 50+ runner. Mike Bordoni won his 6th road run (including track 5K) out of 7 tries for the year while improving his PR by 9 seconds. Becki led the ladies. Rob led the men 40+ runners, Dennis led the 50+ men, and Jim Howe led the 60+ men. Thanks to Danny & Madelyn Moon, Kelly Emo, and Stan DeMartinis for helping at the finish line.

N.B. John Peterson and Joe Byers started as a team but Aaron had to
substitute for Joe when Joe came up lame.
This was a tough workout to time because there were so many runners and the runners tended to finish in bunches. Madelyn Moon, Roger Lobbes, and Neil Gelblum did as good a job as possible under the circumstances. I think that we have the correct order of finish. I added a minute to the Pickens team time because they were told to start a minute sooner than they should have started and I did not count the Byers team because of the substitution. Obviously, some of the individual splits are inaccurate. We clicked the watch for every hando ff. The problem was in matching the times with the runner handing off as we could not write down the names quickly enough.
It was nice to see Dave Garcia out there running with us as he was visiting from Las Vegas.

Very tough workout. The first three teams finished well in front of the other teams but places 4 through 18 were reasonably competitive. John Peterson helped the first place team by running 2 minutes under his rating. Kat gave her team a big boost toward finishing last when she failed to run back 100 meters to meet her partner after her first run. Mike finally figured out what had happened and then ran an additional 100 meters in order to hand off to Kat. I do not know how they managed their next run because Kat should have only run 200 meters on her second run and Mike would have had to run with her so that he could start his next 300 in the correct place. Thanks to Jim Bordoni for compiling the results.

Big turnout this morning with many good performances. Slim Pickens has started to return to good form as he led the way with the #6 performance by a 45+ runner on this course. Mike Bordoni had an upset stomach but still managed to finish 2nd while improving his PR by 5 minutes. Dennis Kurtis ran the #6 time by a 50+ runner. Missy Sudan led the ladies. Bob Schmitt, Carl Petersen, and Tim Rostege recorded the #2, #6, and #8 times by 65+ men runners. Ruby Hurtado became the first woman 65+ runner to complete this course. Becki Kriege ran the #4 time by a 40+ runner as she, Kristina Park, and McKayla Plank, who ran 35:05 for 10K 12 hours earlier, ran together. The helpers, Uyenthi Tran, Danny Moon, Roger Lobbes, and Madelyn Moon, claimed that they did an awesome job.

Good morning for running as 10 of us ran PRs. Mike Bordoni won by about 200 yards despite making a wrong turn onto Springbook and running an extra 280 or more yards, which may have cost him a minute. Becki Kriege broke her own women's course record, which she set 18+ years ago in August 1988. She also broke the women's 40+ record by over 2 minutes. Missy Sudan continued to run well as she improved her PR by 6 seconds. She ran her previous best 3 1/2 years ago. The top three women's times for this course are held by Becki, Kristina Park (35:19 in September 1996), and Missy Sudan, all of whom ran today. Bob Schmitt ran the #2 men's 65+ time, trailing just Ralph Poole. Elaine Erickson ran the #7 time by a woman 50+ runner. Ruby Hurtado became the oldest woman club member to complete this course, establishing a new 65+ standard for the women at 83:50.

Great race this morning as Art Mitchum outsprinted Mark Goldman by inches for the win. Mike Bordoni ran the fastest time for this workout since Ray Russell ran 14:47 10 years ago. Missy Sudan led the ladies and PRd for the workout with a cumulative time of 17:18. Uyenthi Tran also PRd by over a minute. Don Packwood race walked the workout at a 10:47 per mile pace. The two runners who were the furthest over their ratings - Rich Collins and Chris Cassell - were on the same team. So, you know what place they finished. Chris Blue was suspended from the club for a year for slaughtering the club prexy on both runs. She started even with him on the first run and 7 seconds behind him on the second run. Danny Moon, Madelyn Moon, and Dick Chimenti did a superb job of timing us. They got every split, both accurate ones and inaccurate ones.

Mike Bordoni PRd by 20 seconds while winning by nearly 2 minutes and becoming the 83rd club member to crack the 20-minute barrier. Brian Conroy missed his PR by 7 seconds and Mr. Consistency, Dino, missed his PR by 8 seconds. Bob Schmitt ran the 2nd best-ever 65+ time, missing Norm Saucedo's record by 18 seconds. Helen Wong ran her fastest time on this course in 3 1/2 years and Elaine Erickson ran her fastest time since she ran 25:37 in November 2007. She also moved to #7 on the women's 50+ list. Rich Collins ran his best Farwell time in 5 years. Chris Blue improved her 55+ time by 51 seconds as she recorded the #4 55+ time. Rich Stiller missed his PR by 12 minutes and 12 seconds.

Surprisingly good weather for the run this morning. It rained hard driving to the workout, drizzled during the warmup, and then we had rainless, 55-degree weather for the race. Dave Piazza won his second consecutive Saturday road run with a 100-yard victory over Al Murray. Missy Sudan led the ladies with a fast 28:50. Newly-turned 50+ runner, Norry McAllister, took home the weekly trophy with his PR run. Bob Schmitt ran this course for the first time as a 65+ runner, recording the #5 65+ time. Elaine Erickson ran the #8 time for a woman 50+ runner.

Bad handicapping in that all teams were rated to finish at 38:30 and only a few came close to that time. But, we still had a close race for first.place. Ron Blancas started 42 seconds behind Jeff Bedolla on the last lap and got close to him but Jeff just would not let Ron get by as they finished in a tie. Jeff, who had run below par the last several weeks, had a very good day, averaging 4:27 per run. Jim Myers ran with us for the first time in 6 months, averaging 7:11 per mile pace for his runs. Tom Warfel averaged 7:16 per mile a few weeks ago when we ran repeat miles and improved all of the way down to 6:44 pace this morning. Mike Bordoni led all runners with a total time of 13:23 (5:04 per mile pace). This broke the Bordoni family record (held by his brother, Matt) for this workout by 15 seconds. At least four club members have broken 13 minutes for this workout, including current members Ray Russell (12:30) and Jake White (12:52). 60-year-old Jim Magill ran with us for the first time, averaging 4:31 per run (6:50 per mile). Don Packwood walked his 4 intervals in a total time of 28:03 (4:00 rest in between walks). Missy Sudan led the ladies (2 seconds faster than her teammate, Kristina) with a total time of 15:30. This broke her workout record for this course by 14 seconds, which she set 4 years ago. Danny Moon presented the annual brown bag award prior to the start of the workout. This award is given to the runner with the most DNFs for the year. Ray did not appear to be pleased to receive this award as we pulled him from his hiding place in the bushes.

The temperature was about 50 degrees during the run this morning with the rain varying between light to moderate and the runners had to run wide at the end of the first turn each lap due to standing water in the first lane. Easy win for Mike with splits at 1600, 3200 and 4800 meters of 5:28, 11:03, and 16:48. Missy led the ladies. Rob led the 40+ men, Jim Bordoni led the 50+ men, Jim Howe led the 60+ men, Liz Nast was the first 40+ woman finisher, Chris Blue was the first 50+ finisher, Ruby was the first 60+ finisher, and Tim Riley was the first finisher with an artificial hip. Don Packwood did a great job of race walking but came up short in the counting-laps department.

Easy win for Dave Piazza on another cold morning (40 degrees?). Good race for 65+ honors among Bob Schmitt, Joe Hurtado, Carl Petesen, and Tim Rostege with Bob emerging as the winner. Bob and Carl recorded the #5 and #6 times by a 65+ runner. Liz Nast led the ladies, recording the #7 best-ever time by a 40+ woman runner. Chris Blue recorded the #3 55+ time and Elaine Erickson recorded the #6 50+ time. Don Packwood improved his walking best for this course by 76 seconds, averaging 10:56 per mile.

Big turnout for such lousy weather (28 degrees at the start of the workout). The Van Zant team led after the first 5 runs but got passed by 3 teams during the last run as Dino anchored with a 6:14 final 1600 to lead his team to victory. Mike Bordoni,aided by the rest given him because his partner was race walking, had the best average at 5:09 per mile. Stepanie Bambury led the ladies with a 5:53 average.

Rob Nast ran to an easy win on our first road run of the year on another cold morning (high 30s). Jeff Candello finished second with the all-time #10 time by a 50+ runner. Dwight Cornwell, Tim Rostege, and Bill Meinhardt have the top three 50+ times at 26:41, 27:01, and 27:07. Amanda Gerhardt continued her good running by recording the #2 time by a club open woman runner. She ran the course in 28:34 in 1999 before joining the club. Tom O'Connor finished as the #2 50+ runner while improving his PR by 9 seconds. Jim Howe recorded the all-time #3 time by a 60+ ruuner. Missy Sudan finished as the #2 woman runner, coming within 22 seconds of her PR. Mike Krey improved his PR by 52 seconds. Bob Schmitt ran the #5 time by a 65+ runner. Norry McAllister ran with us for the first time in quite awhile, coming within 7 seconds of his 45+ best. Chris Cassell improved his 50+ PR by 7 seconds. Elaine Erickson ran the #10 time by a woman 50+ runner. Kat Powell improved her 55+ best by 3 minutes to move to #5 on the women's 55+ list. Roger Lobbes ran this course for the second week in a row. Last week he ran 40:52.8 and this week he ran 40:52.9. Don Packwood walked th course at 11:24 per mile pace to improve his walking time for this course by 53 seconds.
