Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Tom O’Connor

Despite the cold weather (36 degrees when we arrived at 7:30AM), there were several outstanding performances this morning. 50+ runners Tom’Connor and Dave Piazza raced hard over the Short Six course as they recorded the #7 and #8 all-time bests for 50+ runners. Many good 50+ runners, including 50+ record-holder Tim Rostege at 32:37, have run this course. Carl Petersen shattered the 70+ record set by Ray Stewart 11 1/2 years ago by 31 seconds. Carol Bednar improved her all-time PR by 46 seconds to move to #8 on the women’s 40+ list. Frank Prabel, recovering from an injury, ran with us for the first time in six months. Jim Bordoni ran the #15 best for a 55+ runner and Danny Moon ran the #16 best for a 60+ runner. Jorn Jensen, who turns 40 next March, ran a fast 35:10 for the Short Six course. Kim Chi rescued us at the last moment as we had a bunch of runners but no timers. Danny Moon assisted her after he staggered in from his Farwell run. Kat Powell ran the Short Six course for the third week in a row.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Carol Bednar

Cold this morning (36 degrees when we arrived at the college at 7:30AM). Close win for Mike over Scott. Dave Piazza recorded the #13 best by a 50+ club runner. Dino missed his PR by 5 seconds. Becki was pleased to complete her first road run in several months. Mike Krey PRd by 4 seconds. Carol improved by 32 seconds but stayed #7 on the women’s 40+ list but is now just 1 second behind Madelyn Moon. She also took the lead in the C division of the Cum Sat contest, 12 seconds in front of Tim Rostege and 13 seconds in front of Carl Petersen with just one week to go in the contest. Danny Moon was extremely pleased to knock 59 seconds off his 60+ best to move into #19 on the 60+ list. Cecilia improved her best by 29 seconds. Rich Collins improved his 65+ best by over 3 minutes. It was his best time on this course since May 2001. Ken Noel improved his 70+ best by 31 seconds but still remained in last place in the 70+ division. He is eagerly awaiting your editor’s arrival in the 70+ division in 4 months so that he can escape last place. Ed Gavin ran this course for the first time in 5 years. Paul Taylor and Neil Gelblum braved the cold weather to help time us.

Dick Barrett Trophy – Chris Blue

In the spirit of good sportsmanship, six of our top runners started at 7:45AM so that the remaining 19 runnners would have a better opportunity to win the regular race. Jim Myers showed great sportsmanship by walking at least 5 times for significant periods of time and still beating two of the sensational runners.

Andy Williams was another good sport. He added a quarter mile to the run by missing the Austin cutover to Quito and continuing on Hwy 9 until he reached Quito. As can be seen, he still won. Paul Taylor ran the only PR, improving his best time by 3 seconds. Carl Petersen improved his 70+ PR but remained in second place on the all-time 70+ list, 32 seconds behind Ray Stewart. Eddie Reyna became the third 75+ club member to complete this difficult course. Howard Powers and Stan DeMartinis are the other two. Marcia Morrison recorded the third best-ever women’s 60+ time for this course. Two of our timers – Jim Bordoni and Danny Moon later ran a track mile race at Saratoga high school in 5:25 and 5:56. Jim ran his last lap in 76. Danny, after pushing a little kid into the infield to take the lead in his heat, staggered through a 95 last lap. The kid’s father was later seen chasing Danny.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winners - Rich Collins & Dennis Kurtis

It was a milestone day as, out of the fog, just a few yards behind winner Scott Bang, Dennis Kurtis kicked to an all-time record for the 55-59 group - less than 48 hours, I might add, after he notched a 17:17 in the Elite-PA/USTF 5K championship at the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot. Meanwhile, Rich Collins was beating his 65+ record by more than a minute, ordinarily a more-than-worthy showing for the Dick Barrett trophy, which he did receive, though before some goof - that would be me - realized D.K.'s accomplishment, beating by 2 seconds a record held by Dwight Cornwell that had stood against an onslaught of some mighty fine runners. So, let's call Dennis and Rich co-Barrett winners. Also of note, young Cecilia Wiklund, starting to prep for the 2020 Olympics, had the day's only PR, and by nearly a minute. And Paul Taylor (less than 48 hours after winning the 50-59 10K at the non-Elite portion of the Turkey Trot, though because of a timing glitch the "official" results show him No. 2) missed a PR by 4 seconds. Great timing help from Christine Blue, Don Packwood and Tim Riley.

The standings shown above are after revising for incorrect starting times. The teams were incorrectly started in the reverse of the order that they should have started. The top runners were Rob Nast, Scott Bang, and Andy Williams. Runners were slowed because we had to run up the steps and run through the volleyball court in order to get out to the road.

Balmy weather this morning – 64 degrees, slight wind, and rain. Andy Williams left the field immediately on his way to an easy win as he improved his 45+ PR by 73 seconds. Tim (comeback kid) Souza got second. Kristina got out of bed at 7:45AM, arrived as we were standing on the starting line, jogged 30 yards to the start and then got a third place finish. Tom Warfel knocked 2 minutes off his 60+ PR and Rich Collins improved his 65+ PR by 9 seconds. Joe Beyers, who hasn’t been to a club workout since injuring himself 18 months ago, made an appearance and said that he would soon be back to running club Saturday workouts. Thanks to Jim Bordoni for doing the timing under very wet conditions.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Dave Piazza

Magnus Wiklund blasted 76 seconds off his PR while romping to an easy win this morning. Dave Piazza celebrated running his first Saturday course as a 50+ runner by recording the #13 time by a 50+ club member. Seventy-nine 50/54 have run this course. Rich Collins improved his 65+ best by 3 minutes. This pushed the unidentified club president into last place for 65+ runners who have run the course. Ken Noel knocked 4 minutes off his 70+ PR to move to #6 on the 70+ best. The often-injured Tim Rostege was able to run with us for the first time since March. Jeff Rohrer’s talented 8th-grade daughter, Heather, ran a Saturday course for the first time.

Danny Moon continued to show a lot of improvement this morning as a result of his training with the cross country team that he coaches. But, he wasn’t quick enough to hold off the come-from-behind finish of Dave Woodruff, whose last run gave his team the win. Bob Pickens almost looked like his old self as he led all runners with a 5:25 average. Magnus Wiklund was next with a 5:39 average. Becki Kriege led the ladies with a 5:56 average. Another excellent job of managing the workout by Jim Bordoni, Uyenthi Tran, and Pablo Rodriguez.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Christine Kennedy

We had a light rain this morning, which may have helped the performances. This was Scott Bang’s 40th birthday and he celebrated by winning by over a quarter of a mile. Christine Kennedy was the star of the morning as she broke the women’s 50+ record by 2 1/2 minutes. Becki Kriege broke her own women’s 40+ record by 8 seconds. Dick Chimenti recorded the #5 time by a 65+ runner, 1 second behind Norm Saucedo and 2 seconds in front of Dave Norlande. Pauline Beatty improved her 50+ best by 45 seconds. Kat Powell improved her all-time PR by 1 second to move to #4 on the 55+ list. Ken Noel ran the #8 70+ best. Rich Collins became the only 65+ runner to run slower than Walt Van Zant. But, he has 4+ more years to improve on his time. The timing crew included Tom Zades, Paul Rodriguez, Madelyn Moon, and Danny Moon.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Paul Taylor

We ran the Valle Vista course a few weeks ago in place of Farwell/H due to construction work. So, we were supposed to run Farwell/H today. However, several runners were unaware of the change. So, all were given the option of running either course. The majority chose Valle Vista. The women dominated the first race, taking four out of the top six places with Katie and Amanda tying for first. Dave Piazza scored an easy win on the Farwell/H course. Paul Taylor took home the weekly trophy as he PRd by 69 seconds.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Jim Howe

Surprisingly after all of the rain that we had yesterday, we had good conditions for our race this morning – no water on the track, temperature in the mid 50s, and clear skies – but it was somewhat windy. Scott ran to an easy win but behind him there were several good battles. Al Murray and Jeff Rohrer trailed Becki by about 25 yards through most of the race but threw in big kicks on the last lap to get 2nd and 3rd places. Woodruff, Bordoni, and Dunn had a close battle for 5th place. And Arturo Rodriguez, Carl Petersen, and Mike Krey had a close race for 20th place.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Carl Petersen

The temperature was 34 degrees when we got to the college this morning, less than ideal running conditions. But, despite the conditions, we had a very large turnout with many notable performances. Scott Bang, two months short of turning 40, averaged 5:32 per mile to score an easy win. Dennis Kurtis ran the 6th best-ever 50+ time. Becki Kriege knocked 2 seconds off her 40+ PR. Magnus improved his PR by 45 seconds. Dave Woodruff Sr missed his PR by 2 seconds. He brought 4 other members from his family and all ran well. Bill Dunn missed his own 60+ course record by 2 seconds. Frank Prabel improved by 7 seconds. Paul Taylor improved by 56 seconds. Carl Petersen broke the 70+ course record, set by Dave Valles 13 years ago, by 5 seconds. Cathy Frye improved her PR by 71 seconds. Kat missed her PR by just 6 seconds. Danny Moon was ecstatic that he missed his PR by just 5 1/2 minutes as he posted the 29th best-ever time by a 60+ runner (25 have run the course). Less-than-notable performance other than Danny’s run included Ray Russell missing his PR by 5 minutes, Dave Norlander missing his PR by 5 minutes, Tom "Warfel" missing his PR by 7 minutes, Rich Stiller running 9 minutes over his PR, Rich Collins running 9 minutes over his PR, and Walt Van Zant running 10 minutes over his PR. The latter two had an epic battle with several sprint passes (or it seemed that way). Rich spurted the last mile in 9:19 to get the win. Thanks to Jim Bordoni and Madelyn Moon for doing the timing. It is important that we have volunteers to help with the timing on Saturdays, especially when 50 show up to run.
