Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Dave Woodruff

Good race for first place this morning.  Pauline Beatty put her team into the lead during the 7th leg and they held the lead until Woodruff took over the lead during the 10th leg.  But, Pauline put her team back into the lead during the 11th leg.  Alas, Dave was too strong for Helen Wong on the last leg.  Jim Bordoni probably suffered more than any of us as he was paired with his son, Jack, who averaged 1:47 per run.  Jim, who had the 2nd best average of the morning really struggled with the lack of rest in between runs.  Uyenthi Tran and Helen Wong ran very well for the second week in a row to finish as the top two women.  George Lo celebrated his 40th birthday by running with us for the second time since he joined the club.  Unfortunately, he was given a bad handicap and was teamed with Danny Moon.  So, his team finished last.  Danny ran much better than last week but still has not recovered from his Caribbean cruise.  He needs to get his high school team to start training so that he can improve by running with them.  Tim Riley ran slow because he hasn't recovered from his pre- Christmas run  at Quicksilver Park.  Tom Zades, who also ran at Quicksilver two days ago, had the good sense to drive straight to the restaurant for breakfast rather than attend the workout.  Thanks to Aaron Lee and Tom Warfel for their timing efforts.  Aaron single-handedly timed all runners finishing their legs at the 200 mark without missing a beat.  Tom Warfel joined your befuddled editor in timing all of the runners finishing their legs at the start/finish line and catching a few of my rare mistakes.  Remember, one more week of running on the Prospect track (re run the 12 x 800 relay next Saturday) before we return to West Valley College on 1/9/10.

Due to the closure of the WVC campus, we ran our workout at Prospect high school this morning.  Mandy Benham made her first appearance at a club workout in two years and aided by her partner, Jim Bordoni, led her team to an easy win.  Nine of the fourteen teams beat the par rating of 35:00.  Jack Bordoni led all of the guys with a 76.0 per lap average, including a 59.1 on his last lap.  Missy Sudan led the ladies with an 88.8 per lap average. Danny Moon was obviously paid to take a dive as he ran a remarkable 82 seconds slower than his time when we last ran this workout on 10/3/09.  He claimed that he did not gain any weight during his recent Carribean cruise but the stop watch - and not his custom scale - indicates otherwise.  Neil Gelblum and Dave Norlander ran terrible but Neil was saving himself for a race tomorrow and 70+ Dave is still recovering from the Cal International marathon.  Glenn Kishi surprised with a series of good runs.  The timing crew of Aaron Lee (recording runners), Scott Bang (on the stop watch), and Carol Bednar (calling out the names) did a superb timing job of this difficult to time workout.

*  Got lost, running a course that he cannot completely recall.  He missed the
left turn from Valle Vista to El Camino Grande, back-tracked to El Camino,
made a few other turns, finally getting onto Montewood, then onto Quito, past
Sobey to Bicknell, then turned around on Quito, turned right onto Sobey, left
onto Chester, left onto Allendale, and left through the middle of the college
to the finish line.  Tom has been running the 3-mile Valle Vista course over
   a 20-year period.
The most plausible explanation for this meandering through Saratoga is that
he took a stupid pill prior to coming to the workout.

** Ran an  extra 0.2 miles because he turned left onto Chester rather than left
   onto 10 Acres.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Scott Bang

This was our second consecutive all-courses day.  The weather was much warmer than last week (mid 50s) but we did have a light rain.  The most notable performance of the morning was Georgia Riley breaking Ruby Hurtado's 65+ course record for women.

Due to the fact that the WVC campus will be closed from 12/19/09 thru 1/3/10, we changed the workout this morning from the campus loop relay to an all-courses day and will do so again on 12/26 and 1/2/10.  The notable performances this morning included Scott McLeod improving his PR by 1 minute for Valle Vista and Paul Taylor improving his Short Six PR by 39 seconds.  Dick Chimenti ran a rare Saturday workout, recording the #10 time by a 65+ runner for Farwell.  Jo Ann ran the #2 time by a 55+ woman runner for the Short Six course. Rosanna ran the #7 time by a 50+ woman for the same course.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Scott Bang

Good turnout this morning.  Easy win for Scott.  Norry ran the only PR, improving his best by 48 seconds and taking the lead in the A division of the Cum Sat contest. Carol Bednar ran the #8 time by a women 40+ runner, Mike McMahon recorded the #5 time by a 70+ runner, Rosanna recorded the 5th best-ever time by a 50+ woman runner, Liz Nast ran the #8 women's 45+ time while improving her 45+ PR by 31 seconds, and Georgia Riley become the club's first 65+ woman runner to complete this course.  Tim Riley improved his 65+ best by 170 seconds and Rich Hahn improved his 45+ best by 23 seconds.  Dena ran a PW but that was still good enough to put away her arch rival - Tom Zades.

N.B. The leadoff runner for the team that started at zero pulled her hamstring muscle on the first lap.  So, that team dropped out and the anchor runner, Danny Moon ran next to Uynethi Tran for her first two runs and one lap of her 3rd run before substituting for Rich Collins on his last run because Rich also strained his hamstring muscle during his 3rd leg.

Another great annual handicap race hosted by Rich and Judy Collins.  Our surprise winner was Alvin as he started 9th, 4 minutes behind Georgia Riley.  She held the lead through the first three loops of this four-loop race. Alvin finally moved into the lead during the last loop and then held off a frantic sprint  by Joe Hurtado to win by about 10 yards.  The top 29 runners finished within one minute of each other. Scott Bang, a late entrant, followed up on his good run of last week to have the fastest scratch time.  Jorn Jensen and Dennis Kurtis had the next two best times.  Becki Kriege had the fastest time for the gals.  Iris Louie slaughtered her turtle group and is on the verge of being given the boot because she is running so well.  Tom O'Connor, who has been weakened from the start of year-long medical treatments, showed great spunk as he sprinted the last 100 yards to barely edge Don Packwood.  Jim Bordoni and Uyenthi Tran did an excellent job of getting all of the lap splits.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Tom Zades

Big turnout this morning and a close race for first place with Jorn pulling away from Scott over the last half mile. Joann Dahlkoetter was the star of the day again as she broke Jutta McCormick's 55+ record for women by 37 seconds.  There were 5 PRs.  Bob Lord led the way with a 77 second improvement that put him into 4th place on the men's 70+ all-time list.  Glenn Kishi PRd by 43 seconds, Scott McLeod improved by 28 seconds, Magnus improved by 18 seconds, and Jeff Candello improved by 13 seconds.  Magnus now leads the elite division of the Cum Sat contest by 1 second over Dave Piazza.  Neil Gelblum continued his good improvement as he beat his 55+ best by 56 seconds.  Andy Williams took 37 seconds off his 45+ PR and Scott Bang took 12 seconds off his 40+ PR.  Comebacking Tom Zades took nearly 5 minutes off his 2008 best for Farwell.  Rick Kananen ran his last race as a middle-age runner as he turns 60 tomorrow.  Alas, Caroline Green and Rosanna Kennedy followed the trail sign that pointed to the right in the double-gate area and ran far off course.  They finished in 42 minutes but would probably have run near 30 minutes flat if they had known the correct course.

We ran two heats this morning - one at 7:20AM and another at 8:10AM.  The results shown above are a combination of the two heats.  Jorn Jensen and Andy Lief ran within a few steps of each other throughout the race with Jorn having a better finish over the last 200 meters.  Ken Bloesch, Madelyn Moon, Jim Bordoni, Aaron Lee, and Uyenthyi Tran helped at the finish line.  Good 5K weather conditions this morning.  We were slowed a bit by standing water on parts of the first turn.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Joann Dahlkoetter

Scott led the way this morning, winning by nearly one minute.  Becki led the ladies.  The star of the day was Joann as she broke the women's 55+ course record, set 13 years ago by Jutta McCormick, by 85 seconds.  Brian Conroy ran the only PR.  He also took over the lead in the B division of the Cum Sat contest by 65 seconds over Dino Delyani.  Danny Moon felt lousy but was enlivened when he passed several runners going down Fruitvale, but then got very tired going up Saratoga.  So, he cut back at Douglas, finishing first for this course but also earning the dreaded DNF.  Ken Bloesch did an excellent job of timing over the past few weeks but could not make it out today.  So, Mike Krey, Madelyn Moon, and Cecilia Wiklund filled in admirably for him.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Jack Bordoni

Great run for Duncan.  He drifted off course when he originally turned right onto Sobey from Austin.  This probably cost him about 30 seconds.  Still, his time put him #8 on the all-time list between David Furst's 31:15 and Jose Palalia's 31:17.  His brother, who has just started running after an injury, finished second.  Jack Bordoni took home the weekly trophy because he improved his PR by 6 minutes.  Andy Williams improved his 45+ best by 74 seconds.  Tim Souza missed his PR (31:46) that he set 20 years ago by 6+ minutes.  Neil Gelblum improved his 55+ PR by 67 seconds to move to #12 on the 55+ list of the 57 55+ runners who have run this course.  Dave Norlander ran the #3 70+ best behind Ray Stewart and Carl Petersen.  Chris Blue recorded the #2 60+ women's time.  Tom Zades knocked 2:19 off his 65+ best to lead the turtle group of himself, Tim Riley, and Chris Cassell.

The Chappell/Martinelli team won by a wide margin this morning but we gave the trophy to the Norlander/Nast team because the first place team received a generous handicap rating due to the unknown knowledge of their running abilities.  We had several fast performances.  Bob Pickens averaged 3:34 per run, Magnus Wiklund averaged 3:35, Dan Martinelli averaged 3:41, Dave Piazza averaged 3:42, and Andy Williams averaged 3:44.  Chris Cassell led the turtle group with a 5:26 average and is now on the brink of being ejected from that group due to his improvement.  Neil Gelblum, after again requesting a soft handicap because he wasn't feeling sharp, then proceeded to run his best time for this workout in 3+ years.  And, he was one minute faster than the last time we ran this workout in January.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Dino Delyani

Warmish morning as the temperature eventually reached 96 degrees today.  Scott Bang missed his 40+ best by 4 seconds while easily winning.  There were many other significant achievements.  Glen Kishi improved his PR by 37 seconds.  51-year-old Dino Delyani (he turns 52 on Wednesday) broke his all-time PR by 5 seconds.  Jim Bordoni took 14 seconds off his 55+ best.  Bill Dunn missed his 60+ PR by 3 seconds.  Frank Prabel came within 6 seconds of his PR.  Bob Rea visited us from New Zealand for the first time in about 3 years and was fast enough to run the 20th best-ever time by a 55+ runner.  Neil Gelblum improved his 55+ PR by 21 seconds.  Bob Lord ran the 4th best-ever 70+ time and Chris Blue ran the 2nd best-ever 60+ time for women.  Tim Riley led the turtle group, narrowly beating Chris Cassell.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner = Dave Woodruff

Easy win for the Murray team as Jim Myers ran 29 seconds under his rating and Al Murray ran 41 seconds under his rating.  The Mitchum team got a good deal when I gave Scott McLeod his old rating of 11:15 rather than rating him at 10:30 since he ran 10:26 when we ran this same relay in March.  He ran 10:27 today.  Scott Bang led the guys with a 72.8 average.  Becki led the ladies with an 84.6 average.  60+ runner Bill Dunn ran very well with a 79.3 average.  Thanks to Ken Bloesch and Carl Petersen who timed this difficult to record relay.

The Jim Bordoni team started first and still led by 200 meters at the finish.  Jim probably had the best average at 34.5 per run.  Dino Delyani strained a muscle.  Otherwise, his team would have finished a bit higher.  Good timing job by Carl Petersen.

Small turnout this morning as there were three competing races this weekend.  Easy win for the Danny Moon team but the trophy was given to the Delyani team because Joe Hurtado helped pace all of the other teams (what a stud).  Slim Pickens had the best average at 80 seconds per lap.  Helen Wong led the ladies (1) with an average of 102 per lap.  Our brilliant timers crew included Jim Bordoni, Uyenthi Tran, and Aaron Lee.

Small turnout this morning as many club members were saving themselves for the Zippy 5K tomorrow.  But, the elite timers (Jim Bordoni, Mike Krey, Rich Hahn, and Aaron Lee) did show up to view this spectacle.  Slim Pickens won for the first time in quite awhile.  Danny Moon took home the weekly trophy for improving his 60+ PR by 4 minutes.  Dick Chimenti ran the #12 best-ever by a 65+ runner, just in front of Howard Powers.  Don Packwood improved his soft 65+ PR by 5 minutes.  Pablo Rodriguez ran his first Saturday workout in nearly 4 months.  Marcia Morrison ran this course for the second consecutive time in exactly 43:30.  Ed Gavin ran for the last time as a 45+ runner as he turns 50 tomorrow.  Jim Myers led the turtle brigade.  Tom Zades moved to last place on another 65+ list (Thanks Tom.  I appreciate being relieved of one of my many last-place listings).

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Mike Krey

50-yard win by Jean as the three Rancho San Antonio Park criminals took the top three spots this morning.  Mike Krey took home the weekly trophy as he was the only runner to set a PR.  But, there were many notable performances.  Dave Piazza came within one second of his 50+ PR.  Nory missed his all-time PR by 4 seconds.  Tim Souza knocked 55 seconds off his 45+ best.  Neil Gelblum improved his 55+ best by 18 seconds.  Danny Moon, thanks to the coaching he receives from the Saratoga high school girl distance runners, improved his 60+ best by 75 seconds.  Joann Dahlkoetter ran the #2 all-time best for 55+ ladies behind Jutta McCormick.  Dave Norlander recorded the #3 all-time best by a club 70+ runner.  Ed Gavin improved his 45+ best by 2 minutes.  Marcia moved to #3 on the women's 60+ list.  Don Packwood knocked 20 seconds off his 65+ best.  And, Tom Zades moved to #20 on the 65+ list (out of 20).

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Aaron Lee

Several very close races this morning.  The Wiklund team came from behind to barely edge the Krey team.  19 seconds later, the Bunker, Lee, and Wong team had another close battle for third place.  And 8 seconds later, the Moon, Gelblum, and Pickens teams had a hotly contested battle for sixth place.  Aaron Lee received the weekly trophy because he did such a good job of putting the teams together.  The timers, who alleged that they did not miss any splits, included old reliables Jim Bordoni, Madelyn Moon, and Pablo Rodriguez.

Phantom Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Joann Dahlkoette

Jorn celebrated his 40th birthday two days late by winning our race this morning.  Christine Kennedy led the ladies while improving her women's 50+ course record by 20 seconds. Joann Dahlkoetter made her first Saturday appearance in many years, missing the 50+ course record by 5 seconds.  8th-grader Heather Rohrer improved her PR by 4 minutes, averaging 6:59 per mile.  Chris Blue recorded the #2 time by a 60+ runner and Dave Norlander recorded the #4 time by a 70+ runner. Liz Nast moved to #6 on the 45+ list. Danny Moon improved his 60+ PR by 77 seconds. Nory McAllister showed that he has nearly fully recovered his conditioning from a long-time layoff due to injury by coming within 10 seconds of his 50+ best. Tom Zades, exhausted by his recent 58:27 10K, staggered to a 49:01 finish (10:18 pace).  Some of his fellow slugs (Ken Noel, Chris Casell, Jim Myers) were heard muttering that they were embarrassed to be seen warming up with him.

The McLeod team started last, took the lead during the last 100 meters of the 15th interval, and then pulled away during the last lap to win by about half a straightaway.  Greg Burke and Bill Dunn started together on the last lap with Greg barely got away during the last few yards to finish 2nd.  The two 60+ runners ran their last lap in 76.5 and 78.5.  Jim Bordoni had the best average at 77.1.  Dick Chimenti, who is recovering from a broken wrist while skiing, ran with us for the first time in 8 months.  He ran with a light cast, having downsized from a larger cast.  Ron Blancas joined us for the first time in a little over a year.  Pauline Beatty brought out her friend, Nancy Joseph, to run with us for the first time.  The handicapper did a terrible job rating Ken Bloesch, who ran 67 seconds over his rating.  Nice job of keeping track of the times for this difficult to time relay by Pablo Rodriguez, Carl Petersen, Chris Blue, and Uyenthi Tran.

Tom Zades was ecstatic about finally making it onto a top 25 list for a Saturday course as he is now #18 on the 65/69 list for the Short Six course (out of a total of 18 65+ runners who have run the course).  Liz Nast led Mike Krey off course as she turned left onto Chester from Sobey.  This is becoming a popular divergence for club members when running this course.  Good timing and assistance jobs by Danny and Madelyn Moon, Chris Blue, Cecilia Wiklund, and Paul Taylor.

Good turnout despite the cold weather (38 degrees when we arrived).  Tough relay to run because the course was torn up due to construction -- a few right-angle turns to slow us and we had to run up about 15 steps and run through the volleyball court to get to the road.  The Bambury team won  but win was tainted by giving Stephanie a generous rating (This rating was given to her by her teammate, the handicapper).  The second-place finish was tainted because Gurinder was given a generous rating when he showed up for the first time in eight months.  So, the 3rd place team won the weekly trophy.  The top runner for the guys was Magnus Wiklund with a 3:43 average.  Stephanie led the ladies with a 4:03 average.  Danny Moon ran a horrible 5:22 on his first run (Did the gamblers get to him with a substantial bribe payment?).  In retrospect, Tim Rostege got a too-fast rating and his team paid the price with a last place finish.  If we are scheduled to run this relay or the 0.33M relay and the course is still torn up, we will run a different relay on that day.  It appears that most runners did not like running this relay under the conditions that we had this morning.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Tom Warfel

Big turnout for this event.  And, for a change, we had decent weather – mid 50s and no wind – but the track was wet.  Scott Bang ran splits of 5:37 and 11:16 on his way to an easy win.  Slim Pickens had a good run to finish 2nd.  Christine Kennedy led the 13 ladies who ran with splits of 6:16 and 12:30 on her way to a 19:23.  Heather Rohrer, an 8th-grader, ran a great 21:36.  Cecilia (8 years old?) ran 22:24 – an average of 7:13 per mile. Paul Taylor improved his time from last year by 18 seconds.  Pauline ran her best 5K in at least 4 years.  Someone impersonating Chris Cassell ran 5 minutes slower than Chris’ 2008 best 5K.  Rich Collins and Tim Riley, who ran great last week (drug-enhanced performances?), ran at a considerably slower pace this morning.  Tom Zades continued to make significant improvement.  Tom Warfel pulled his hamstring but still managed to finish.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Christine Kennedy

Another cold morning (40 degrees).  Jean Harris led for most of the way but encountered breathing problems about a half mile from the finish and had to let up.  Bjorn, who had been running with Magnus, then surged to the front and won by about 30 yards.  Christine Kennedy finished in the top 10 while breaking the women's 50+ record by 94 seconds.  Jack Bordoni PRd by 43 seconds.  Bjorn PRd by 23 seconds.  Uyenthi PRd by 8 seconds.  Mike Krey tied his PR.  Jean missed his PR by 8 seconds.  Dave Woodruff missed his all-time PR by 2 seconds but improved his 50+ best by 6 seconds.  Rich Collins knocked 66 seconds off his 65+ best, Rich Hahn improved his 45+ best by 25 seconds, and Tom Warfel improved his 60+ best by 24 seconds.  Kelly Emo ran her best time on this course in over 2 years.  Bill Dunn finished within 19 seconds seconds of his 60+ course record and Carl Petersen finished within 17 seconds of his 70+ course record.  Peter Kettle, Jackie McCleary, Ken Bloesch, and Sara LaMarch ran a Saturday road run with us for the first time.  Thanks to Jim Bordoni, Danny Moon, and Brian Low for doing the timing on this cold morning.

Big turnout for this relay.  The battle for the first three places wasn't close.  But the competition for places 4 through 17 were very close as 75 seconds separated these 14 places.  The top dogs for the guys were Jorn Jensen at 5:22 per run and Scott Bang at 5:23.  Missy Sudan and Carol Bednar led the ladies at 6:12 and 6:27. Good timing job by Jim Bordoni and Madelyn Moon.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Dennis Kurtis

Cold Morning (40 degrees) but many impressive performances and some spectacular performances.  Scott Bang said that he threw in many surges until he was finally able to get away from Magnus and cruise to the win.  Three age-group records were set.  Dennis Kurtis broke Bill Mossie's 55+ record (set 22+ years ago) by 30 seconds.  Chris Kennedy broke her own 50+ course record by 22 seconds. And, Carl Petersen broke Dave Valles' 70+ course record (set 14 years ago) by 18 seconds.  Carl now holds four of the six course 70+ records.  Dave Valles holds the Farwell record and Ray Stewart holds the Short Six record.  Marian Richard ran the #6 best-ever time by a 45+ woman runner and Carol Bednar improved her 40+ best by 84 seconds to move to #7 on the women's 40+ list.    Jim Bordoni moved to #13 on the 55+ list.  Magnus and Paul Taylor improved their PRs by 16 seconds each.  Danny Moon and Tom Warfel improved their 60+ bests by 3 minutes.  Rich Collins improved his 65+ best by 15 seconds and Neil Gelblum tied his 55+ best.  Dena Noble ran a terrible time because she allegedly had to stop and give directions to a distressed motorist.  Helen Wong did a super job of helping with the timing.  She didn't miss a name even though some incorrect names were called out to her.
