Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Norry McAllister
This was our last Saturday run of the year (but run on a Sunday) and our last chance to improve on weak times run during 2010 or to complete all of the six courses for the Cum Sat contest. Eight club members took advantage of this chance to complete all of the courses. We had no rain but it was a bit cold (high 40s). But, there were several good performances. Ken Bloesch PRd by 79 seconds on the Short Six course, George Low PRd by 61 seconds on the Farwell course, Alvin Jackson PRd by 43 seconds on the Farwell/H course, and Todd Welke PRd by 9 seconds on the Douglas course. Des Knuckey, fresh from a vacation in Las Vegas, ran a club run for the first time as a 60-year-old, recording the 16th best-ever time by a 60+ runner out of the 45 super seniors who have run the Farwell course. Tom O'Connor recorded the 4th best-ever time by a 55+ runner on the Short Six course, one second in front of Joe Hurtado. Brian Davis completed the last of the six Saturday courses to win the Elite Division of the Cum Sat contest. Tim Rostege recorded the 9th best-ever time by a 70+ runner on the Farwell course. Dwight Cornwell got lost on the Short Six course and Kat Powell got lost on the Triangle course. Glenn Kishi started ahead of time on the Short Six course but did not get a time as his watch stopped. Jim Bordoni, who has been in a cast for aboaut two months with a broken bone in his foot, walked the Farwell/H course in order to complete all of the courses for the year. Injured runners Becki Kriege and Kari Cornwell walked Farwell. This gave Becki 7 events in the Racer of the Year contest, the minimum number needed to qualify for an award in that contest.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Scott Graham
Good weather for our run this morning. It rained hard overnight but the temperature was about 55 degrees and the most that we got during the run was a light drizzle. As can be seen from the above results, Scott Bang scored an easy win. Scott Graham took home the weekly trophy as he PRd by 63 seconds. Missy Sudan led the ladies. Tom O'Connor ran the #6 best-ever 55+ time, behind Bill Meinhardt and just in front of Jeff Candello. Kristina Park recorded the #9 best-ever time for a club female 40+ runner. Chris Cassell knocked 58 seconds off his 55+ best despite a near collision with a car as he roared around the turn into the campus. Tom Warfel knocked 20 minutes off his Cum Sat times during the past two weeks and expects to make an even more dramatic improvement next week to move past Tim Riley. Thanks to Glenn Kishi, Becki Kriege, and Kari Cornwell for timing the run.

David Garza pulled away from Tim Souza during the last mile to win this morning. Alvin Jackson had the only PR, a 44-second improvement on his previous best. Newly-turned 60+ runner, Kat Powell, ran the 2nd best-ever 60+ time for a club woman runner. Tom Warfel knocked 12+ minutes off his yearly best for this course. Dena improved her yearly best by 2+ minutes and was wondering where Tom Zades was. There may not be a winner in the Elite division of the Cum Sat contest this year. Just two runners have run 5 of the 6 courses - Brian Davis and Andy Williams. No ther Elite Division runner has a chance to complete all of the courses. Thanks to Ken Bloesch and Jim Bordoni for timing the club workout.

Andy won by nearly a quarter of a mile. Brian Conroy came within 25 seconds of his all-time PR at the advanced age of 55. He also slipped by Jim Bordoni and Danny Moon by 2 seconds on the 55+ list to move into 17th place on that list. Mike Krey let out a Kat Powell-like screech to edge Scott Graham by half a second. This improved Mike's 55+ by 42 seconds. Helen Wong ran her fastest time on this course in nearly 3 1/2 years. Kristina recorded the #11 best by a club 40+ runner. Rich Hahn improved his 45+ best by 16 seconds. Tim Rostege and Don Packwood ran the #9 & 10 70+ bests for this course. Our expert timers were Aaron Lee and Danny Moon. It should be noted that no runners in the elite division have completed all of the courses in the Cum Sat contest. Brian Davis and Andy Williams are the closest with 5 courses completed. Andy needs to run the Triangle course and Brian Davis needs to run the Short Six course in order to complete all of the courses.

We had a small turnout for the relay this morning. This was due to the cross country event the same day and the San Jose 1⁄2 Marathon and Bridge to Bridge 12k the following day. The team of Don Packwood and Kevin Breit finished first. A fantastic finish for third place developed on the final leg. Dino had a small lead on Aaron with 200 to go. Both runners were all out and Aaron caught Dino about 50 yards from the finish. This finish earned Aaron the weekly trophy. Don Packwood, Kevin Breit and Helen Wong ran under their rating. Danny Moon performed well over his rating. His performance may have been partially attributed to running with his shorts on backwards. Timing was provided by Madelyn Moon and Ken Bloesch.

Only 2 PRs this morning both from the same family, Joseph improving by 50 seconds and Lan Aubuchon with a 3 minute 40 second improvement. There was a race to the finish between Kat Powell and Chris Blue, which was exciting. We all heard this very loud cat like screech from Kat and saw Chris sprinting (flying) by Kat for the for the win! Bob Pickens ran for the first time since his surgery a while back. Glad to see him out. Timers were Ken Bloesch and Danny Moon

All teams were rated to finish in 34:00. Pablo Rodriguez ran so well that his team ran 2 minutes under their rating and won by nearly a minute. Some club members suggested that Pablo be given a drug test. However, he grabbed the weekly trophy and ran away so fast that we were not able to test him. Thanks to Uyenthi Tran and Ken Bloesch for doing the timing and Aaron Lee for setting up the teams.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Scott Bang
We had four races this morning. Ken Bloesch and Tim Riley ran their mile on the West Valley College track. The rest of us drove over to Saratoga high school as the track gates were locked and there was a sign stating that no one was allowed on the track because they had sprayed the football field with some chemical.
Race #1
Glenn Kishi led most of this race on his way to improving his track mile PR by 9 seconds. However, Hank Lawson passed him during the last 200 meters on his way to a 30-meter victory. Alvin improved his mile time from last year by 15 seconds while finishing third. We had three elite 70+ runners in the race with Bob Lord scoring the win over Carl Petersen and Dave Norlander. Rosanna missed her PR by 0.3 seconds. Walt Van Zant and Tom Warfel celebrated after the race because they were only lapped by three runners in this top-notch field.
Race #2
Dave McIntyre led this race through a first quarter mile in 87 with Neil Gelblum close behind. Scott Graham took over the lead at the half-way point and pulled out to a 25-meter at the end of the 3rd lap (4:29). He gradually pulled a little farther ahead during the last lap as he got under the 6:00-minute barrier by 1.2 seconds.
Race #3
There were several good sub-races wihin this race. Jean Harris, who ran 2:57 at the San Francisco Marathon last Sunday, raced to an early lead with cumulative splits of 68 and 2:22 for the first two laps. Scott Bang appeard to be dead meat at this point, looking listless and trailing by 6 seconds. But, he got all excited on the 3rd lap when Jean fell to an 80. Scott was within a couple of meters of Jean at the end of the 3rd lap and kicked away to about a 10-meter win. There was a good battle for third place. Kevin Breit was by himself for the first 3 laps and had a 5-second lead on Norry, Ken, and Dave Piazza going into the final lap. Kevin barely held on for 3rd place as Norry and Ken got within a few yards of him at the end. Norry bettered his best track mile since joining the club by 15 seconds and Ken PRd by 1 second. Dino, Aaron, Dave Woodruff, Alex, Andy, and Brian finished within 3 seconds of each other in the 6-man battle for 7th place. This was Dino's best track mile since he ran 5:36 in 2006. Aaron ran his best track mile in 4 years.

A lot of good running this morning as six runners broke 18 minutes and nine averaged under 6 minutes per mile (18:37). 14 of the 19 runners who ran the track 5K in January and again today bettered their January times. Scott Bang led the 40+ runners, Norry led the 50+ runners, John Yamagata led the 60+ runners, Carl Petersen led the 70+ runners, and Becki Kriege led the women runners. Our timers included Tom Zades, Chris Blue, Aaron Lee, Uyenthi Tran, and Tim Souza. All except Tom did a good job. Tom had his watch taken away from him after he incorrectly reported Tim Riley's time (Tim is one of Tom's primary rivals) at 39:35.

Scott Bang, who has been running the Farwell course for 15+ years, broke his PR (set in April 1999) by 5 seconds while running unassisted throughout the run. His time puts him #14 on the 40+ list. Missy Sudan led the ladies. Ken Camet and Scott Graham PRd by 30 and 15 seconds. Scott PRd despite wracking himself up when he ran into a pole. Des Knuckey and Eddie Reyna lost a considerable amount of time when they did not make a hard right onto Douglas when turning right off Saratoga Ave. Both angled up Shadow Oaks and then eventually looped back to Saratoga Ave. Eddie is now 0 for 2 this year in staying on course for Farwell.

Easy win for the Moon team. The Tran team got the weekly trophy because they came closest to the estimated team finish for all teams of 21:30. Danny Moon claimed that his team ran far under par due to his partner, not realizing that his partner had timed all of their runs. In fact, it was Danny, who has been feigning slowness for many months as a setup to win a weekly relay, who ran farther under par than anyone else. He seems to be following a pattern first seen last year - run slowly for several months, then start training with his high school team, and then suddenly rediscover his former speed. Thanks to Mike Frey and Aaron Lee for timing the workout.

Tom Zades and Tim Riley started early and then had to resort to desperate sprints in order to barely hold off the fast-closing Kevin. Glenn Kishi took home the weekly trophy as he improved his PR by 83 seconds. George Lo improved his PR by 69 seconds, Des Knuckey improved by 69 seconds, Des Knuckey improved by 30 seconds, Dino improved by 7 seconds, and Norry mproved by 3 seconds, which was good enough to slip by Joe Hurtado and Norry McAllister on both the all-time list and the 50+ lists. Tom O'Connor, after a long down period due to illness, continued to improve, missing his 50+ best by 28 seconds. Mark Goldman ran with us for the first time in 15 months. He has been away from action due to three knee surgeries during the past year. We appreciated the help of timers Jim Bordoni, Aaron Lee, Uyenthi Tran, Neil Gelblum, and Danny Moon.

Small turnout because many runners were going to compete in the Across The Bay 12K on Sunday. The Bordoni team won by a whopping amount but was assisted by being told to start one minute sooner than they should have started. Oldie Jim Bordoni was the leader of the pack with a 1:48 average. Rich Collins had to quit because of an injury. Congratulations to Danny Moon as he ran 103 seconds slower than the last time that we ran this workout. Joseph & Lam Aubuchon ran with us for the second week in a row. Several club members were narrowly missed by cars as there was a lot of traffic due to a large invitational high school meet being held on the track. Thanks to Aaron Lee for setting up the workout and then subbing for Rich Collins. And also thanks to Uyenthi Tran and Neil Gelblum for their assistance in the timing.

Many notable performances this morning. Brian ran off course by following the “trail” sign in the double-gate area until he reached a bridge. He backtracked to the course and was still fast enough to win. There was a very good race for places 3rd through 7th with Neil getting 3rd. He beat his all-time PR by 6 seconds at the advanced age of 58. Mike Krey, also a 55+ runner, bettered his PR by 6 seconds. And, Frank Prabel bettered his PR by 23 seconds. Christine Kennedy and Missy Sudan were the first two women finishers. Christine Kennedy at age 56 ran this course for the first time and still was good enough to record the #10 best-ever open women's time. She also broke the women's 55+ course record by 192 seconds. Very impressive. Missy, who has the all-time 2nd best open time at 21:00, recorded the #3 40+ women's time, just 7 seconds behind Sue Francis. Don Packwood improved his 65+ best by 59 seconds to pass Tom Zades on the 65+ list. Dave Piazza improved his 50+ best by one second. Eddie Reyna also was misled by the “trail” sign, running all of the way back out to Hwy 9. He probably would have run in the low 35s if he hadn't gone off course. Don Packwood was all set to sprint by Kat Powell at the finish until "big-mouth" Danny (I think that is what Don called Danny) yelled a warning to Kat and she rallied to hold Don off. Excellent help provided at the finish line by Ken Bloesch, Aaron Lee, Danny Moon, Chris Blue, and Carol Bednar. Runners who ran today and who ran under 20 minutes on this course in their younger days included Bill Dunn (18:40), Tim Souza (18:54), Tom Warfel (19:36), your editor (19:45), and Rick Kananen (19:46). Rich Stiller, who restricts his appearances to the after-run club breakfast has an 18:22. Jake White, who failed to show up for breakfast this morning, has a best of 18:16.

Brian Davis took home the weekly trophy as he recorded the #7 best by a 50+ runner (76 50+ runners have run this course). Two PRs - Norry tied his PR and Paul improved his PR by 8 seconds. We had several former super runners competing. Those running who have previously broken 26 minutes included Tim Souza (24:45), Bill Dunn (25:17), Danny Moon (25:21), Tim Rostege (25:27, and Jorn Jensen (25:55). Jake White (24:53) skipped the run but dutifully reported to Carrow's for the after-run breakfast. Thanks to Jim Bordoni and Ken Bloesch for their timing job under wet conditions.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Helen Wong
Jack Bordoni took the early lead and held about a 10-yard lead until Scott caught up to him at the mile marker. Thereafter, they ran together until Jack pulled out to a 5-yard lead on the backstretch of the last lap. Scott kicked hard off the last turn but could not close the gap. Helen Wong took home the weekly trophy because she ran her all-time 5K PR. Missy Sudan led the ladies. Christine Kennedy, who is coming back from an injury, also ran well for the ladies. Rosanna Kennedy improved her best 5K as a member of our club by about a minute. Scott McLeod also ran his best 5K since joining the club. Dave Piazza was the top finisher for the 50+ men, Jim Howe led the 60+ men, and Carl Petersen led the 70+ men. New club member, John Yamagata, drove down from Sacramento to run with us. Thanks to Ken Bloesch, Danny & Madelyn Moon, and Aaron Lee for doing the timing.

The Prabel team, aided by Frank's improved running, romped to an easy win. Neil Gelblum's team finished second. Neil used his typical sob story to gain an additional 15 seconds in his handicap and then went out and ran by far his best time for this workout in several years. High schooler Jack Bordoni led all of the guys with a 2:26 average, including 2:21.9 on his final run. Missy
