Final road runs of the year. Bob Lord ran the only PR, bettering his old PR by 4 minutes and moving to #2 on the 75+ list. Becki Kriege recorded the #3 best by a club woman 45+ runner. Timing and recording of times was courtesy of Dave Norlander and Carl Petersen. Chris Blue was in charge of calling out incorrect names as the runners crossed the finish line. She did a lousy job. Didn't call out a single bogus name.

Dino blasted away from his fellow 55+ runners (the first 4 finishers were 55+) at the start and finished in front by nearly a quarter of a mile. His effort not only gave him the win but improved his 55+ best by 11 seconds. Those improving their age-group PRs included Robert Navareete with a 17-second improvement of his 55+ best and Rich Collins with a 84-second improvement of his 70+ best. Rich's performance moved him from last to 2nd to last in the 70/74 category and put your editor into last place in that division for all of the courses. Recently-turned 75+ runner Bob Lord recorded the 3rd best-ever 75+ time for this course. Thanks to Dave Norlander and Carl Petersen for helping at the finish line.

Gary Waggoner ran to his 2nd-ever Saturday road run win while knocking 105 seconds off his 45+ best. Gary's only other Saturday course win came 10 years ago on 12/20/03, when he ran his PR of 34:50 for this same course. Dino Delyani (Mr. Consistency) missed his age-group PR by 14 seconds. 47-year-old Becki Kriege ran this course for the first time in three years, recording the #3 best 45+ time by a club woman runner. Dave Piazza was pleased to make the top 50 list for 55+ runners with his 42:13. That puts him at #43. Dave does not realize that your editor, who is slightly in front of Dave on this list, will immediately expand the top 50 list when more than 50 runners beat my time. So, Dave's berth on the list will be protected forever, even if Dave never improves his 55+ time (But, Dave should improve his time as he has just started his comeback). Tom Warfel improved his pathetic 65+ best by 13 minutes. This is the start of one of Tom's many comebacks from an injury. Thanks to Dave Norlander and Jim Bordoni for bravely enduring the very cold weather to time us this morning.

Another good performance by Norry this morning as he won, knocked 17 seconds off his 55+ best, and recorded the 7th best-ever time by a club 55+ runner on this course. No all-time PRs but several age-group PRs. Kat Powell improved her 60+ PR by 3 minutes while breaking the women's 60+ course record. Gary Waggoner improved his 45+ best by 17 seconds, Mark Goldman improved his 60+ best by 13 seconds, Rich Collins improved his 70+ best by 43 seconds, and Dick Chimenti recorded the #5 course best by a 70+ runner. Claire Liang and Courtney Conlan, two sub-20-minute Crystal Springs runners from Prospect high school, ran with us for the first time. Ralph Poole visited us from Seattle for the first time in quite awhile. Ralph holds all of the 65+ course records except Farwell and has times in the top 5 for all of the courses in the 60+ age-group. He is also well known for passing runners (including your editor) by running backwards while he was passing them. Thanks to Carl Petersen, Dave Norlander, and Danny Moon for helping at the finish line.

There were many notable performances on this ideal running-weather morning - low 50s and no wind. The top three runners ran near each other throughout the race with Geoff showing his superior sprint speed at the end to get the win. There were three all-time PRs, including the PR by Norry, who at age 56 and having run this course many times, improved his PR by 20 seconds. This put him #4 on the 55+ list amongst some of the gods of club distance running (Tim Rostege, Dwight Cornwell, Bill Meinhardt). Age group PRs were set by Gary Waggoner (53-second improvement on his 45+ best), Todd Hayes (173-second improvement on his 60+ best), Mark Goldman (16-second improvement on his 60+ best), and Kat Powell (152-second improvement on her 60+ best and also #2 on the women's 60+ list). Robert Navarrete missed his 55+ best by one second. Thanks to Danny Moon, Dave Norlander, and Don Packwood for helping at the finish line.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Don Packwood
(Writeup by Danny Moon)
This was a close finish after some on the spot real time handicapping by our timing team of Carl Peterson, Ed Gavin and Danny Moon. Don Packwood ran his guts out, racking up his foot on the last run which earned him the weekly trophy. Don never made it to the Country Inn for breakfast and was seen riding home with the trophy in hand to show Lorna of his success. Geoff and Dino had great runs trying to catch the pack.

We had 40 runners in the handicap race and about 60 for breakfast. Things went smoothly at the finish line (mostly) with the help of Walt VZ, Tom Warfel, Chris Cassell, and Sandy. Anjali Sudan did a great job getting all the runners to predict their time and Anil Sudan was a big help crunching the numbers. A big thank you to Judy and Rich Collins for hosting the race and breakfast for 15 years now. Walt did a brief history of the Shetler race before the awards ceremony and Danny Moon assisted by Jackie Rohrer did the mc'ing. Thanks to them all.
Here are some highlights: Overall winner: Danny Moon (23:50) fastest time: Mike Kriege (18:04) fastest female: Kristina Park (19:09) closest to prediction: Phil Spink (22:59.9 and he predicted 23:00) farthest off rating: Phil Spink (22:59 and we rated him at 19:30)

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Mary Kriege
Jorn took off fast and ran away from the field to win by about 300 meters. Geoff and Ken had a good battle for 2nd place until Geoff finally got away over the last mile. Mary Kriege, Kristina Park, Becki Kriege, and Ellie Lemco ran together for about half the race until Mary started to pull away and she did have to pick it up as Kristina Park has a fearsome kick. This was Mary's first race since she recently started training after a long layoff due to a stress fracture. Heather Rohrer may have run her best race since she ran our track 5K last summer in 21:00. JoAnn Dahlkoetter turns 60 in September and wanted to show that she was ready for the 60+ competition with a sub-23 5K. And, she got it with 23 seconds to spare. Norry led the 50+ men, Jim Bordoni led the 60+ men, and Bob Lord led the 70+ men. Dave Norlander directed the finish-line crew of himself, Danny Moon, and Scott Graham. Dave has been given permission to start running by his doctor after an extensive layoff due to a slow-healing fractured foot.

It was a warm morning as the race started. The first two runners, Daniel Chiriaev and Geoff Bradley, missed the first turn onto Horseshoe and took the second instead. That meant extra distance as they ran the reverse direction on Horseshoe and had to cover the section between the two Horseshoe junctions one more time. They still managed to come more than a minute in front of Kristina Park who was the first lady across the finish line. Ellie Lemco improved her PR by 39 seconds and was awarded the trophy. (Since they deviated from the prescribed course, Daniel and Geoff were DQed from trophy competition.) Tom Warfel was happy as he beat Jake White's time for the age group by 5 seconds. Rich Collins was also happy as he beat the 70+ time of Walt Van Zant.
Timers included Dave Norlander on stopwatch, Chris Blue on clipboard, and Danny Moon as the spotter.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Jorn Jensen
As we prepared for the first heat, we noticed there was no mile marker on the new track surface. Jim Bordoni, however, used his carefully calibrated stride to mark our starting point within a few millimeters of the true one-mile distance of 1609.34 meters. A yellow water bottle was placed on the edge of the track to mark the starting line.
The first heat was designated for runners in the 7 minute per mile or slower group. A few of the faster runners decided to use the heat as their warm-up for the subsequent heats. After the heat had started, Neil Gelblum decided he wanted to run in the heat so he started 1 minute after the rest of the runners. Mark Goldman crossed the finish line a half second before George Lo to take first place in the heat with a time of 6:43.1. Rich Collins, Tom Warfel, and Don Packwood just missed getting under the 8 minute mark. Andy Lief was running along with Calvin Do and Jorn Jensen but pulled off after 3 laps. Uyenthi was the first lady across the line with a time of 6:56.2.
In the second heat, designated for runners between 6 and 7 minutes, Andy Lief just nosed out Jorn Jensen with a 5:45.1. Bill Dunn led the 65+ runners with a 5:58. Danielle Zelinski was the first lady in the heat with a 6:02.2. Kat arrived after the first heat and joined this one for a time of 8:08.1. Don Packwood was happy she did as that meant that he did not have the slowest time for the event.
In the third heat for the sub 6-minute runners, Jorn Jensen stayed close on the heels of Calvin Do for the first two laps but then Calvin started to pull away. On the final lap, Calvin looked relaxed as he left Jorn far behind. There was a good race for third but Norry put out a great effort managed to cross the finish line more than 5 seconds before Ken Camet. Jim Bordoni had the best 60+ finish in the heat with a 5:36.5. George Lo, who ran all three heats came in last with a 6:17.0
Calvin got the trophy the previous week so declared himself not eligible for this event. Jorn Jensen, who ran well in all three heats was declared the trophy winner.
Some of the participants were using the event as the training run for the San Rafael Mile on July 22.

The three teams that started first finished 1st, 2nd, and 4th as the Navarrete team gradually pulled away throughout the run to win by about 60 meters. Geoff Bradley, Norry McAllister, and Kristina Park had the best overall times at 10:02, 10:24, and 10:36. Thanks to Dave Norlander and Gary Vergho for recording the splits. This was a difficult relay to correctly time as there were many close finishes at the end of runs.

No handicapping this morning as all of the teams started from scratch. The ladies team gave the guys a battle for first place during the first four legs as they held the lead at that time. But, then Neil Gelblum stepped up the pace during his 1600 meter leg to give his team a 40-meter lead and they then gradually continued to pull away for the win. Kristina Park had the fastest splits of the day with a total time of 14:03. She was closely followed by Andy Williams at 14:07 and Geoff Bradley at 14:08. Roberto and Adam, who will turn 50 later this year, finished 2nd and 3rd. Kristina led the ladies. Carl Petersen missed the 75+ course record by 36 seconds. He will have to run much better the next time that we run theis course if wants to hold off Bob Lord, who will turn 75 late this year. Gary Vergho made his first appearance at a club workout in many years, coming to watch his son and grandson run. Thanks to Rich Hahn and Danny Moon for timing the runners.

The Vergho team started first and stayed there the rest of the race. Norry McAllister led the guys, nipping Geoff Bradley by 0.4 seconds. Kristina led the ladies. Gary Vergho came out to see us for the first time in about 20 years. He embarrassed himself by trying to take the weekly trophy, explaining that it was his genes that produced the winning combination. Tom Warfel and Rich Stiller teamed up at an unknown time to record a team time of 70:46. Tom impressed us with his splits of 21:21 and 21:04 but Rich was even more impressive with splits of 14:32 and 13:49. Low fog this morning but better than normal temperature for early morning at this time of year. Norry McAllister brought his team from a 17-second deficit at the start of the last loop to a 14-second winning margin. Scott led all of the guys with a 3:42 average. Scott said that it was all that he could do to get up this morning as he stayed up late visiting with his dad. He barely got to the track in time to sign up for the relay. Kristina Park led the ladies with a 3:53 average.
Our 4 ladies running this morning had their fastest leg on their 3rd run as Helen Wong started that leg leading all of the ladies. She dropped to 4th of that group by the end of her leg but ran her fastest at 4:24. Danielle Zelinski was 2nd at the start of the leg and ran a great 3:54, 32 seconds faster than her average for her other 3 runs to grab the lead. Becki Kriege started the leg in 3rd of the group and stayed there while running a 3:57, 14 seconds faster than her average for the other 3 runs. And, Kristina started 4th and almost caught Danielle with her 3:46, 9 seconds faster than her average for her other runs.
Someone must have substituted for Carl Petersen on his first leg as 4:32 was recorded for Carl on his 1st leg and 5:31, 5:26, and 5:22 for the other legs.
The teams that finished 6th, 7th, and 8th started 3.0 seconds apart at the beginning of the last leg and finished 1.9 seconds apart at the end as Becki (no kick) Kriege came from 8th place to finish 6th with a 4:00. Phil Spink passed Scott Graham to get 7th place.
Geoff Bradley was disheartened to see that his partner lost 5 places during the 2nd to last leg to put his team into 9th place. However, Geoff passed 4 teams during the last leg to get his team a 5th place finish. He did enjoy his 6+ minutes rest in between runs.
Kevin Vergho ran with us for the first time in 21+ years and brought his son, Tyler, with him. Tyler is in middle school. They could not persuade grandpa Gary Vergho, who used to regularly run with us many years ago, to come to the workout.
Danielle took home the weekly trophy because she anchored the team that came closest to par for the relay - 40:30.
Thanks to Jim Bordoni and Pablo Rodriguez for timing us.

Good race for first place on this balmy morning (low 50s) with the top three finishers staying together for about six laps, when Scott started to drop back. Then, with 500 meters to go Geoff Bradley surged and Ken gradually dropped back as Geoff pulled away to 1 30-meter margin a victory at the finish line. Becki led the ladies, including four very good 40+ runners. Norry led the 50+ runners and Jim Bordoni led the 60+ runners. Bob Lord and Joe Hurtado led the six 70+ runners as they sprinted down the last staightaway with Bob winning by about an inch.
