Phantom Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Dave McIntyre
This was our final workout of the year. Some were aiming to win their division in the Cum Sat contest, some were aiming to complete all of the courses, and others were just trying to improve one of their course times. Sheldon needed to improve his Triangle course by 4 seconds in order to win the A division but after a great start, got a bad cramp and had to drop out. Missy knew what she had to do to win the C division – run the Short Six a little slower than she did last year – but did not have a good day. So, Robert Navarrete was able to hold on for the win. Dave NcIntyre ran as hard as he could from the college entrance to the end and it was good enough to give him the D division win. Tim Souza improved his 55+ Farwell/H course by 2½ minutes. Dwayne Spencer PRd for the Triangle course by 73 seconds. Bob Lord became the 3rd club 80+ runner to complete the difficult Short Six course. Thanks to Danny Moon, Jim Bordoni, and Wiley Liu for their help at the finish line.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner – Becki Kriege
There was some bad handicapping this morning as the first 2 teams finished far under the estimated finishing time for all teams of 43:45. The injury-prone Becki Kriege agreed at the last moment to run the relay so that all present could run the relay and it was her birthday. So, she was awarded the trophy. The fastest runners for the guys were Ah Sing, Joseph, and Adam at averages of 1:43, 1:44, and 1:48. Mary Kriege led the ladies at a 1:52 average. Each runner ran a total of 1.98 miles. Thanks to Danny Moon, Nancy Kirk, and Jim Bordoni for helping. Jim was very helpful in that he got the splits at the halfway mark of the course. Jim broke his right wrist the day before but he is left handed. So, his handwriting remained perfect as was the handwriting of Nancy.

Radha was the exception to the rule, running 10 seconds under his rating. Danny blamed these slower-than-expected performances on thes smokey air quality. The fastest runners were Aubuchon (17:33), Ah Sing (17:45, Park (18:50), McAllister (18:59), Waggoner (19:22), and Camet (19:26). All teams (6 teams scheduled to run 16 400s and 3 teams scheduled to run 12 400s) were rated to finish in 27 minutes. Alas, it was forgotten to adjust Mark Goldman’s rating to account for the fact that he would be running only 6 400s rather than 8. The result was that he his team won by a lot. This was not Mark’s fault. The fastest men’s runner was Ah Sing at 76 per 400 and the fastest women’s runner was Kristina Park at 83.5 per run. Thanks to Danny Moon, Becki Kriege, and Radha Nambula for helping at the finish line. This was a difficult relay to time in that frequently groups of runners would would hand off within a couple of seconds of each other. The threesome timing today did an excellent job.

Dwayne stayed behind Sheldon until they reached Fruitvale and then spurted away to win by about 100 meters. Wiley Liu ran the only all-time or age-group PR with a 2 minute improvement on his all-time PR. Jeff Justice, who made a copy of the course map, ran about 4 minutes extra by his estimate by turning left off Sobey and erroneously running up Chester for a couple of yards before turning around. We presently have 6 runners who have completed all of the courses in the Elite E division, more than any other division has. Mark Goldman’s time allowed him to leap over Scott Graham in the D division to take a 1 minute lead. The top 4 in the C division – Robert Navarrete, Paul Taylor, Missy Sudan, and Bob Kemp are now within 2 minutes of each other. Radha dropped off the weekly trophy that he won last week and then drove over to the handicap course, looking for possible short-cuts for our race on Labor Day. Surprisingly good turnout this morning as there was a grand prix cross country race in nearby Santa Cruz at the same time. Joseph Aubuchon led the way with a total time of 11:45 (He ran 11:39 last year). He was followed by Simon at 12:14, Kristina Park at 12:34, and Geoff Bradley at 13:00. Radha ran very well, averaging slightly over 6 minutes per mile for his 9 laps of running. Jim Bordoni got all of the splits on the other side of the track and Danny Moon, John Marks, and Carl Peterson helped to get the splits at the start/finish line. John Marks made his first club appearance in many years. Gary Waggoner made his first appearance in many months.

Five all-time PRs were run – Willie by 8 minutes, Radha by 3 minutes, Jeff by 91 seconds, Neeraja by 65 seconds, and Adam by 39 seconds. The trophy was given to Dave McIntyre, who has been running this course for many, many years and at age 56 it is unlikely that he will ever run an all-time PR again but he did improve his 55+ PR by 26 seconds. Thanks to Danny Moon, Willie Liu, Chris Blue, and Nancy Kirk for their help at the finish line. Dave Norlander started his comeback from surgery by run/walking a mile on the WVC track in 11:57.8

They were also led by Jorn Jensen running the fastest scratch time of the day at 13:17 (a sub 5:20 per mile pace). Kristina led the ladies with a time of 15:04. Your editor spends 1-2 hours before a relay, preparing ratings for everyone. And, rarely do we have a close race. Today, a bunch of amateurs put together the three teams in a few minutes and they finished within 15 seconds of each other. I want the names of those handicappers so that I can put them in charge of putting teams together each week. They did a great job.

Becki Kriege reported on this race, stating that Sheldon and Scott had a good battle over the final 300 yards with Sheldon getting the win. However, Scott got the weekly trophy as he ran very well in his first race as a 50+ runner. Becki did mention that there were a few non-disclosed mishaps. So, if you notice any bogus times, let me know and I will correct them. And, Norry, if you claim that your grandmother states that you ran a sub-13 on this course, we will have to convene a meeting of the club committee to determine whether we should accept your claim. I’m still suspicious about that handicap recommendation that she allegedly wrote for you a few years ago.3/24/18 – Triangle – 4.76M

Rich was rated at 26:30 but claimed that he could only run at 10:00-10:30 per mile pace. So, his rating was changed to 9:30 per mile pace and he then ran the workout at 8:47 per mile pace. Joseph Aubuchon and Sheldon Ah Sing had the two best averages at 2:43 and 2:45 per run. Kristina averaged 2:55 per run. All teams were rated to finish in 46:45. Don Packwood did a super job of recording all of the splits under difficult conditions. Danny Moon did not come to the workout with the clock because he is presently in bed. 54-year-old Roberto became the first senior runner to win a Saturday road run (not including all courses days) since Norry won in March of last year as he pulled away from 52-year-old Dwayne Spencer 3½ miles into the run to win by about 200 meters. There were many good performances despite the 35-degree weather when we arrived at the college. Dwayne PRd by 56 seconds, John Huang Huang PRd by 87 seconds, and Bob Kemp PRd by 86 seconds. An age-group PR was run by Dino (15 seconds). This put him #12 on the all-time list. Other age-group PRs were run by Paul Taylor (80 seconds under his 60+ PR), Dave McIntyre (1 second under his 55+ best), and Neil Gelblum (157 seconds under his 65+ PR). Ken Camet missed his 55+ best by 1 second and Scott Graham also missed his age-group (65+) best by 1 second. We were not sure what time to give Neeraja. She was leading Don Packwood when she incorrectly took the Chester turnoff on Sobey while following a jogger not in the race (a runaway from the nearby old-folks home?). She then got a ride from Norry to get back on course. She claims that she covered 7.91M (Did this include the car ride?). Thanks to Danny Moon, Jim Bordoni, Rich Hahn, and Nikhita Saldi for helping at the finish line under the freezing conditions.

Easy wins by Akito for the men and Kristina for the ladies. There were many highlights on this cold morning (40 degrees). Norry broke his 60+ PR by 28 seconds to move into 8th place on the all-time list for that age group. Norry credits his improvement and ability to train harder on his recent cortisone injection into his rear end. Paul Taylor improved his 60+ best by 17 seconds. Dino recorded the 13th best-ever time by a 60+ runner out of the 62 runners in that age category who have run the course. Kristina tied her 45+ best to remain in 2nd place on the women’s 45+ list, 24 seconds behind Sue Francis. Missy improved her 45+ best by 20 seconds. Scott Graham improved his 65+ PR by 56 seconds. John Huang PRd by 1 second. Bob Kemp missed his PR by a mere 2 seconds. Chris Blue bettered her 2017 best by 39 seconds and Heather Rohrer ran 12 seconds faster than she did in 2017. Your editor ran 8 minutes slower than his previous PW but was outgunned by Rich Hahn who added 9 minutes to his previous PW. Thanks to Carl Petersen, Willie Liu, and Jim Bordoni for helping at the finish line.

The Akito team started first, briefly gave up the lead at the end of the 7th leg, and then Akito spurted to a final leg of 3:21 to give his team a 200-meter win. The Akito team was greatly aided by an overly-generous rating by the handicapper as Dave had run this workout in 24:41 when we ran this relay on 10/28/17 but was rated at 27:30. All teams were rated to finish in 42:30. Slim Pickens ran with us in a club run for the first time in possibly a couple of years. Slim ran this workout in 13:36 back in November 2001. Sub-15 minute runners today included Akito at 13:42, Jorn Jensen at 14:22 and Sheldon Ah Sing at 14:52. Jim Bordoni has been very sick with the flu the past two weeks. He attempted to get the double flu shot for individuals who are 65+ but he was denied because he didn’t turn 65 until January 8. We had a great crew helping at the finish line – Jim, Nikki Saldi, and Carl Petersen. We would have had one more helper but Nandini Saldi, a high school sprinter, was put on a team at the last moment.
