Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Tim Rostege

This was our final Saturday run of the year and it was very cold (30 degrees?). Everyone was allowed to choose their own course in order to improve on their Cumulative Saturday time. Becki Kriege, despite losing several seconds when she and Tim Rostege missed the signal at Saratoga and Big Basin Way, made the most improvement, taking nearly 8 minutes off her Farwell-Herriman time. Tim Rostege took home the trophy because of his hard work to come back to form after his injury. He improved his Farwell-Her riman time by nearly two minutes. Bill Flodberg brought out a visiting friend from Mozambique - Grey Mavhera. Grey has run a 27:56 10K. He strided the Short Six course as part of his morning workout. Dave Bauer visited us from Colorado.

The weather looked threatning this Saturday but held off so that we could run the scheduled event. With no information available to the appointed major domo of the run, we followed the precedent set for the last time it was held. After considerable search thru the records, we decided to start everyone together.

The trophy was awarded to Nellis & O'Rourke

Officials --- Carter, DeMartinis and Hayes.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Kristina Mathias

There were many excellent performances this morning. Ray Russell ran the 6th fastest time ever on this course, breaking his previous PR (set way back in October 1981) by 16 seconds. Kristina Mathias tied the women's course record, which Becki Kriege set 5 years ago. Kristina and Becki ran together all the way until Kristina kicked by her with 300 yards to go. Dave Fergus recorded the 5th best-ever time by a 40+ runner. He might have broken 16:00 if a driver hadn't cut in front of him near the end. Danny Moon ran the #6 50+ time on this course. Joann Dahlkoetter ran the #3 time by a 40+ woman runner. Gene Antonides improved his PR by 31 seconds while moving to #3 on the 60+ list.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Danny Moon

Danny Moon turned 50 yesterday and received his birthday gift this morning, a generous rating for his partner, and took full advantage of the gift as he put his team into the lead with about 350 meters to go and Eddie then lengthened the lead during his final leg. Dick Chimenti came from 10 meters behind to catch Steve Kurasch during his last leg but couldn't get by. He may have run a 45.7 on this leg but forgot to stop his watch when he collapsed. Mike Hegglund and Ray Russell ran 45.3 and 46.0 on their last legs. Ray apparently had the best average at 50.0. Gene Antonides, who is almost 62, ran an opening 300 of 51.3 and was still able to hang on for a high 58 average. All teams were rated to finish in 18:45. Some runners, such as myself, had a good average because they got a longer rest than others.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Brian Low

Today, Ken Napier and Walt VanZant were off racing in Golden Gate Park, leaving Danny Moon in charge. He hired Stan DeMartinis and Art Brookman to assist him. Despite the larger than expected turnout, the unpaid help came through. Art called out the times, Danny called out the names, and Stan wrote down the names, places and times. They alleged that no mistakes were made. They were especially happy that Dave Fergus won by so much so that they could practice their routine on his finish before the rest of the pack started coming in. Brian Low improved his PR by four minutes. Mary Vidovich improved her PR by two minutes while moving to #11 on the women's all-time list. Karl Misner recorded the #7 time by a 60+ runner.

Phantom Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Marion Carter

As can be seen, Ray Russell ran to an easy win on this very humid morning. Kristina kicked by Becki during the last 50 yards to lead the women. Danny Moon was the top male 40+ finisher. Joann Dahlkoetter led the 40+ ladies with the third all-time best by a 40+ woman on this course. Bill Dunn led the 50+ men and Madelyn Moon led the 50+ ladies. Don and Dave took off very fast this morning with Don eventually pulling away to victory as he recorded the 10th fastest time ever on this course. John McFeely, who has been running well lately (5:13 mile on Thursday night), ran his best time on this course in over two years. Russ Kinsch also continued to run well as he replaced that ugly 20:54 yearly best for this course with a 16:36. Don Dugdale made his first appearance in a long time and was elated with his 17:16. Marion Carter improved the 65+ course record that he holds by 4 seconds. Ken Napier moved to #2 on the 65+ list in front of Howard Powers. Pauline Beatty was the first woman finisher as she came within 13 seconds of her PR. A slimmer Walter Williams made his first appearance in several years and shuffled through a 27:50.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Todd Hayes

Dave Fergus ran splits of 5:16, 10:39, and 15:59 at 1600, 3200, and 4800 meters in route to his win. Behind Dave, there were several good races. John, Becki, and Todd ran in a pack until John showed his superior speed over the last lap. This was probably a PR for John. It was the best run in awhile for Todd. Bill and Russ raced together for the entire race with Bill getting the edge. Steve Kurasch ran with Bill and Todd for about twomiles before fading. Oldies Rod MacKinlay (58 in a month) and Norm Saucedo (61) posted very fast times. Ken Noel, Brian Low, Dick Chimenti, Karl Misner, and Nick Paradiso ran in a pack throughout the race. Ken's and Brian's times were excellent for them. Howard Powers dropped out after 50 meters due to an injury. Rich Stiller opened with a 6:16 and dropped to 6:40 on the second 1600 before quitting. He said that he would have continued if he had run 6:30 on the second 1600.

This was a good close race with all of the top six finishers having a change to win the race with a lap to go. However, John proved to be the strongest of the bunch as he took the lead with about 250 meters to go and went on to win easily.

Heat #4 (5:20 & Under)

 Pl Runner Time
  1 Ray Russell 4:32.3

  7 Danny Moon 5:07.0
  8 Al Murray 5:12.0
  9 Dave Babbitt 5:21.9

This was the most competitive race of the day for first place. Don took the lead right off the bat and led through laps of 65, 2:14, and 3:25. Ray was right on his shoulder all of the way and finally inched by Don just before they reached the final 200. Ray won by about 7 yards but the race was still in doubt until the last 50 meters. I believe that this is the fastest mile run ever run on a Saturday morning by a club member at WVC (Generally, it is easier to run a fast mile in the afternoon or evening).

Although the Baumgartner team finished 3rd, Cecil was given the trophy because the top two teams were given generous handicaps due to several reasons. All teams were rated to finish in 40:00. Cecil ran 14 seconds under his PR to lead his team to its 3rd place finish. Tim O'Rourke was our fastest runner with a 1:32 average. Hank Lawson was next at 1:37. Dave Garcia had his best workout in awhile with a 1:49 average. Maureen Sweda led the women.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Maureen Sweda

(by Ken Napier) Due to several local races this weekend, we had a rather small turnout this morning. None of the regular runners registered a PR; so, the weekly Dick Barrett Trophy was awarded to Maureen Sweda. She said that her best in the past had been about 46:00. Since she ran a 42:13 today, she was awarded the trophy. Another new-comer, Derek Decicco, ran a respectable 36:02 while little Matt Bordoni ran a nice 43:15 for his first try on this course.

Ray Russell brought his team from a 200-yard deficit at the start of the last lap to a first place finish. His total time of 12:30 broke the club-member record for this workout by one second. Bob Herndon ran 12:31 in August 1988. Only five club members have broken 13:00 for this workout besides Ray and Bob Herndon. Robbie Meinhardt ran 12:41 in November 1989, Lucas Castillo ran 12:45 in October 1993, Jake White ran 12:52 in July 1980 (the first time that we started running 4 legs each instead of 3), Charles Lighty ran 12:55 in June 1990, and Gil Uresti ran 12:57 in June 1980. Three non-club members have broken 13:00. Jeff Stein and Jeff Shaver ran 12:20 and 12:32 in August 1988 and Bruce Hamilton ran 12:56 in July 1987. Ray set his previous workout record of 12:52 on 12/26/81. The women's bests are 14:37 by Kristina and 14:42 by Becki.

We had nice cool weather this morning as Don Hogue ran to an easy victory. Nothing else exceptional happened except for Howard's PW.

The team of Cyger and Kinsch DNF'd as Russ pulled up lame on the last leg

We had a rather small turnout today as many runners were in Sacramento for the USATF 8K while others were resting up for the 50Plus on Sunday.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Jim Whalen

All teams were rated to finish in 27:30. Jim Whalen cried that he had been harshly handicapped. He then insisted that his son-in-law run with him and said that his son-in-law would run the same pace as him. As can be seen, Jim's team started first and the closest that any team got to them was the Hogue team team at the very end - 300 yards back. We had an excellent timing crew. The stop watch showed that exactly 176 times had been recorded, which is how many should have been recorded, and the times on the tape checked out perfectly for the first 96 splits. Alas, I did not check to see that we had enough tape in the printer. Thus, we have no splits after the initial 96 times. The timers did write down some times after that. Thus, we were able to get 9 of the 11 finishing times.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Ray Russell

Charles Lighty drove over from Stockton to visit us for the first time. Naturally, he claimed to be in poor condition. He was paired with his former West Valley College teammate, Ray Russell. After crying for several minutes about having to start 14 minutes after the first team, they went out and won. However, Ray did have to run a 2:16 on his last 800 to overtake Tim Souza. Ray had the best average at 2:25. Kristina led the ladies with a 2:43average. Charles led the 40+ men at 2:34. Sue Francis led the 40+ ladies at 3:02. Dick Chimenti led the 50+ men at 2:50. Betty Root was the fastest 50+ lady at 3:55. Norm Saucedo narrowly edged out Gene Antonides for the 60+ honors at 2:59.2 to 2:59.7. The Antonides/Misner team lost 74 seconds because Gene thought that he only had to run 3 800s. It took Karl awhile to convince Gene that he had to run 3 more 800s.

Phantom Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Norm Saucedo

Ray Russell and Scott Bang ran together until they turned onto Douglas (1 mile to go). Then, Ray stepped up the pace and cruised to an easy win. Norm Saucedo was the star of the day as he broke Ken Napier's 60+ course record by 37 seconds. Becki Kriege led the ladies with a 21:48. Jim Whalen ran his first Saturday course in quite awhile and showed that he needs to lose a little weight. Our 70+ runners had an off day. Ray Stewart, who has never run the course, made a wrong turn at the Douglas turnoff and ran about 4.7 miles. Dave Valles, who has run the course a couple of times, followed Ray off course. Howard Powers just ran slow (but not as slow as his 39:10 in August). Art Brookman stayed under his 30:55 PW. Marian Carter did an acceptable finish line job (but was aided by Todd Hayes and Stan DeMartinis). We may let him get his mitts on the stop watch next week.

I searched the club archives after this race to see when the listed 60+ course record holder, John Elliott, set the 60+ record. As far as I can tell, I screwed up when I created the first 60+ list for this course. John ran his listed 60+ time before he turned 60 in September 1980. Thus, Ken Napier has held the course record since July 1993.

We had a light turnout this morning because the Cal 10 and Saratoga Great Race were being run tomorrow. And, many of those who did run this morning were loafing. As can be seen, the Warfel team held on for the victory. Dave Babbitt had the best average at 1:38. Danny Moon led the 40+ runners at 1:40. Our first team timers of Gene Antonides, Pauline Beatty, and Bill Meinhardt did an excellent job. Marion Carter, after his performance of last week, was relegated to taking splits at the half way point, doing such a good job (with coaching from Stan DeMartinis) that we may give him another chance at working the finish line.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Ray Russell

There were many notable accomplishments today. Ray Stewart broke Dave Valles 70+ course record by 28 seconds. Norm Saucedo ran the second best-ever time by a 60+ runner, 20 seconds behind Ulrich Kaempf. Dave Furst recorded the the #4 50+ time while edging Frank Ruona from Tamalpa. Don Hogue and Stan DeMartinis had to drop out due to injuries. Marion Carter did a hall of ill-fame performance at the finish line - recording phantom times, recording phantom runners, missing runners, recording incorrect times, writing in an illegible manner, etc. However, after intense detective work by several other club members, we were able to get the times and places squared around.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Ken Noel

Ray Russell and Scott Bang tore out fast on this cold (40 degrees?) morning and stayed together for about 1.5 miles before Ray surged away, finishing with a 5:12 on the final uphill mile. Norm Saucedo improved his own 60+ course record with a sub-17:00 run. Ken Noel, who will be having surgery for his prostate cancer on Monday, ran an excellent 18:28 despite having run only 15 miles during the past two weeks.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Don Hogue

Heat #1
Don Hogue left everybody right off the bat with an opening lap of 74 and then continued to run a series of 75s to pass through 1600 meters in 4:59 and 3200 meters in 9:59. He slowed a bit over the next three laps before finishing strong for a 15:44. We have been running 5Ks on the track twice a year since February 1994. The previous best time was 16:08 by Lucas Castillo. So, Don broke the record by 24 seconds. Ray Russell and Scott Bang had a good battle behind Don with Ray barely holding on for the second place finish. Jim Bordoni led the 40+ runners and David Furst the 50+ runners. Becki had the fastest time of the ladies in either of the two races. Sue had the fastest 40+ time.

Heat #2
Neil Gelblum trounced the field in this race. 11-year-old Matt Bordoni ran in second place until about a mile to go and then held on to finish third. Dave (bad back) Garcia ran a race for the first time in many moons. Kelly, who is several months into her pregnancy, almost broke 22:00. Ray Stewart bettered the club 70+ best for this event of 24:20 by nearly two minutes.

Phantom Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Damon Lease

The scheduled workout was a 36 x 200 relay. However, it was raining fairly hard at 7:30; so, we went over to the Westmont Quad and ran the same relay that we ran about four weeks ago. About 10 or more club members ran the Short Six course at easy effort. Todd Hayes was the star of the day as he led his team to victory with a 2:15 average. Cecil said that he probably would have matched Todd's performance but became demoralized after he saw how slow that his partner was running.

As you may have noticed, Damon Lease ran in this relay. He, Cheryl, and Phillip flew down from Amchorage to attend Jim & Maureen's Super Bowl party. As usual, Damon did a great cooking job. Jim and Maureen hosted a great party. The only sad person at the party was Pauline Beatty, who picked New England. She was temporarily buoyed when they took a 14-10 lead but became very quiet during the second half. Ken Napier won the pool and $80. If Pauline had picked the Pack, she would have shared the first and second place money with Ken. But, the Patriots loss took her out of the money. Mia Howard behaved herself this year. She didn't utter once "How bout them Cowboys."

Don Hogue did not have any of the other club studs to help him this morning. So, he eased his way to the win. Norm Saucedo was one of our stars as he broke his own 60+ course record by 19 seconds. Jerry Lewis recorded the #7 60+ time for this course. Mia Howard led the ladies with a 2-minute improvement on her PR as she moved to #8 on the open women's list. Dave McCarten also improved his PR by nearly 2 minutes.

Ray Russell said that he wasn't feeling too well from the two beers that he had the night before. So, he was given an additional 45-second handicap. He then ran 5 seconds under his original rating and won the race. Don Hogue had the best individual cumulative time at 12:01. Ray, who was given a lot of rest because of his running partner's slowness, had the second best time at 12:10. Mia Howard led the ladies at 14:42. Howard Powers, just returned from a six-month stay on the east coast, showed that he hadn't gained a step since he left. Ken Noel was amazed at how slow his partner, Dave Norlander, ran and was seen inquiring whether some gambler had paid Dave to take a dive. 57-year-old Rod MacKinlay ran very well at 14:25.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Scott Bang

It was cold this morning (40 degrees?) for our first race of the new year but it didn't rain. Don Hogue ran to any easy win. Sue Francis led the ladies. Ray Stewart ran the #2 best-ever time by a 70+ runner behind Dave Valles' 21:33. Suzie Drumm improved her PR by over two minutes. Helen MacKinlay improved her PR by a minute.
