Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Tom Warfel

This was our traditional all-courses day that we run on the last Saturday of each year so that any who desire can improve one of their weak times or complete a course that they haven't had a chance to complete during the year. Inasmuch as it was very cold, most chose to run the shortest course even though we had run the Douglas course recently.

Danny Moon charged to the lead of the Douglas course runners, pulling out to a 40-yard lead by the time that the runners reached Saratoga Ave. Becki, Dick, and Kristina ran together, catching Danny with a mile to go. Becki then pushed the pace so that Dick and Kristina would not be close enough to outsprint her at the end. She was successful as she held them off for the win. This is the third time that a woman has won a club run during the 30-year existence of the club.

Tom Warfel was awarded the weekly trophy for having the willpower to run the longest course on this cold day and running it well. Don Dugdale, who has a best time of 15:47 for the Valle Vista course, ran a scintillating 27:15. Don has been suffering from an achilles tendon problem for 8 years and has decided to have surgery on 1/13/99 so that the podiatrist can re-attach his achilles tendon to the heel bone as the tendon has partly torn away from the bone.

Phantom Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Rod MacKinlay

We had excellent weather conditions for racing this morning - cool and no wind. The top three finishers left the field immediately as they raced up the hill. Once Jose was sure of the course, he left his two fellow runners and cruised to the win in 15:49. Becki, who had not run in over a week because of a cortisone injection in her hip, led the ladies with a respectable 18:52. Rod MacKinlay won the phantom trophy because he was Mr. mediocre (he finished exactly in the middle of the field). All marked with an asterisk ran the Clarksburg 30K six days ago. Some runners not marked with an asterisk ran as if they had run the 30K. Kristina Mathias stood us up so that she could attend the induction of herself into the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Hall of Fame for her cross country and track performances when she attended that college.

We had a rather small turnout this AM as many runners were saving for the Clarksburg 30K.

Jose and Eddie won while averaging 8:32 per loop. The trophy to the last place team as they hung in there and finished over 6 minutes after the first place team. (after starting 2 min ahead of them) And last but not least, the Napier/Ettare team had the slowest scratch time - started first and finished 7th, averaging about 11:09 per loop.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Dave Fergus

When all of us arrived at the club workout this morning, it was not raining. During the warmup, it started sprinkling. And, during the acutal run it started raining a fair amount. Most of us survived in good enough shape to have breakfast at the Ranch House after the run. Scott Bang led until he reached the firehouse and then disappeared off course. Thereafter, Dave Fergus cruised to an easy win. Ralph Poole recorded the #7 60+ time for this course. We may have had a record number of 30+ performances. As a minimum, the number of 30+ performances as compared to total finishers was a record. Congratulations to all of those who made this record possible.

* Given a soft handicap because they said that they would run slow.

Danny Moon started his last lap in third place, 32 seconds behind the leading team, and was able to make it all up and win by two seconds. Lucas Castillo brought his friend, Jose, out to run and he zoomed through the workout at a 3:09.5 average. Slim Pickens led the mortal men with a 3:26 average. Kristina, although loafing, led the ladies with a 3:56.8 average. Jerry Lewis, who hasn't run with us in about a year, got a bad handicap and then got saddled with a weak partner. The result was a last place finish.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Cecil Baumgarnter

The Fergus and Kriege teams were given favorable handicaps and took full advantage of it to finish first. The Baumgartner team was given the trophy because Cecil had a very good day (showing off for his beloved spouse). Ray Russel had the best average at 4:59. Kristina led the ladies with a 5:31 average. The Garcia team had an interesting experience. Each would watch their two kids while the other was running. Dave had to change a dirty diaper during one of his rest periods. After that, Vicki refused to allow him to touch her on the handoffs.

Distance Medly Relay

After the club run, four of our elite 50+ runners went for the world record in the distance medley relay. They were hoping for splits of 59/2:13/3:32/4:54 to break the world record of 11:39 by one second.

Greg Burke, who has a recent best of 2:13 but was feeling under the weather this morning, started with a 2:17.3 for the 800. Dick Chimenti followed with a 59.3 for the 400. Danny Moon ran splits of 67 and 2:19 on his way to a 3:34.1 for the 1200 leg. Bill Dunn finished the relay off with splits of 70, 2:25, and 3:43 on his was to 4:57.5 for the 1600. Their final time of 11:48.2 was very good but not good enough to break the world record.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Ray Russell

Ray Russell, who turned 40 earlier this month, went for the 40+ record but came up short by two seconds. His time put him #2 on the 40+ list. Becki Kriege led the ladies with her 18:01, beating Amanda Gerhardt of the Aggies by a little bit. Sue Francis led the 40+ ladies as she beat Carol Stroud's 45+ course record by 9 seconds. Danny Moon led the 50+ men and Jutta McCormick led the 50+ ladies. Ken Napier led the 60+ runners, nipping Walter Williams by 7+ minutes. Ray Stewart ran 22:31, not his best time because he has been slowed by injuries, but still not bad for a 70+ runner. Slim Pickens improved his PR by 71 seconds. Dwight Cornwell ran the #13 50+ time. Dwight last ran this course in November 1982, when he finished third behind John Clary and Don Dugdale with a 16:32. Tom Warfel broke 19:00 for the first time since June 1995. Don Hogue led the "Runners Pushing a Stroller" division with a time of 18:59. Kelly Emo, who has been running this course since April 1993, broke her PR by 9 seconds. Elaine Erickson has not run this course but her 21:52 was a very good performance for her. Chris Hallen improved her PR by a mere 1 second.

Then, Jake, who ran his first half in 2:55 and was in 5th place with a lap to go, made a big move and got close to Dave with about 100 meters to go but fell back a little at the end. Betty Root DNF!

As can be seen, we had a rather small turnout this AM to run the race. ( I think I handed out over 50 club bulletins this morning so the members were there but just chose not to run).

The weather was great, a little overcast and not too warm. Only a couple of PRs, Frazier and Erickson. We gave the Barrett Award to Erickson as Frazier's previous PR was pretty soft. Actually, Elaine only got the GHOST award as Ray Russell failed to return the trophy.

I made an announcement before the race - Howard Powers lost his shoes again - at last week's 5K runs. Seems no one saw them so guess OL' Howard will have to go back to running in his moccasins again.

It was fun - I didn't pass Betty Root til we got to Austin - then she couldn't take it and dropped out - a DNF !!!!!

This was the slug heat that we ran at 7:15AM. I grabbed the early lead but was soon gobbled up by the top three finishers, who then ran together for quite awhile before Dave pulled away. I think that Sue came back on Dave during the last lap but it was hard to see as they were coming up on my back to lap me. I don't know when Cecil went into the tank.

Dick Barret Trophy - Ray Russell

Ray Russell led all of the way to win this heat with 1600 splits of 5:08, 10:21, and 15:32. Don Hogue helped by running most of the first 1600 with Ray. Dave Fergus showed that he has regained some of his past form to lead the 40+ runners. Bob Anderson led the the 50+ runners.

The ladies had a super race. Kristina, Amanda, and Becki ran together for the first six laps before Becki faded. Kristina and Amanda stayed together all of the way. Both have good speed but Kristina proved to be stronger this morning.

Danny, the second 50+ finisher, had a big scare near the finish as both of the top women finishers almost caught him. He had brown stains on the back of his shorts when I saw him after the race. Kelly Emo's 20:19 was terrific. That may be her best-ever track 5K. Pauline Beatty also must have run a PR with her 21:48. And, Jake partially erased the memory of that ugly 6:07 mile that he ran at an all-comers meet with his 20:26. The 18:29 posted by Dick Chimenti was pretty good for an aging 55+ runner.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Ed Gavin

Ed Gavin started 5 seconds behind Tom Warfel on the last leg, passed him at the start of the uphill with a half mile to go, and then held on for the 4-second win. Ed attributed his 26 second improvement on his PR to the new shoes that he bought yesterday. Dick Chimeniti had the fastest overall time of the day at 16:55. He thanked his partner for the long rest that Dick was able to get in between his runs. The criminal performance of the day was by Eddie Tico, who cut too soon before turning left past the swimming pool.

This was a very competitive race as the first 12 runners finished within 10 seconds of each other. Joe Hurtado led the field through the first 3 laps with splits of 87/2:53/4:22. Then, Cecil sprinted by the field before flaming out with a 200 to go. At that point, Bob Shuck took over but Tom Frazier closed on him during the final 100 meters and appeared to overtake him just before Tom misjudged the finish line and went into a jog 5 yards before the finish.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Elaine Erickson

We had a small turnout for this 4th of July run. Dave Nellis had an easy time winning the race. Todd Hayes had his best time on this course since he ran 28:19 in November 1994. Mike Kriege did alright for a sadly-conditioned former athlete as he ran the course for the first time in over eight years. He was 5 minutes over his PR. Dwight Cornwell jogged the course with his daughter. He had a hard time remembering the course as the last time he ran it was in December 1982. Marian Richard led the ladies but the stars were Pauline Beatty (#8 40+ time), Chris Hallen (#10 40+ time and a 133 second improvement on her PR, and Elaine Erickson (also, a 133 second improvement on her PR). Al Murray led the 40+ runners. Tim Rostege led a field of 8 50+ runners. Ken Noel improved his 60+ PR by 39 seconds.

Danny Moon took off like a Rocket(man) and led 'til he got to Saratoga Ave. Greg Burke then took over. Greg was eventully passed by Pickens, who went on to win by 30+ seconds while Danny held on for third. First lady was Kristina Mathias in a fine 16:51. Ken Noel beat Karl Misner by 8 seconds to take the 60+ title. Burke took the 50+ title, Cecil was the first 40+ man and Sandy Carpenter the first 40+ lady. Georgia won the 50+ ladies title. Ruby Hurtado ran her first race with us since injuring her shoulder last year....Welcome back Ruby! Marion Carter did a geat job stopping traffic on Fruitvale (with the help of Dave McCarten and a big STOP sign. We had a rather small turnout this morning. Hopefully, club runners were just resting up for our 35th running of the famous HOLY CITY Race.

Dave Piazza took off fast and kept the lead to the end. Behind him, there were a host of notable performances. Amanda Gerhardt led a fast ladies' field. Dick Chimenti led the 50+ runners. Danny and Madelyn Moon both recorded PWs (personal worsts). This is the first time that Danny has run slower than 29:00 since he started running this course over 17 years ago. Madelyn ran over 41:00 for the first time since she started running this course 12 years ago. Tim Riley also recorded a PW but I'm not sure whether he was trying. A time counts as a PW only if you are going all out. Karl Misner, Gene Antonides, and Ken Noel recorded the #3, 6, and 7 60+ times. 60+ wannabe Bob Shuck recorded a 31:41. However, he must wait until November before he enters that age category. Chris Hallen recorded the #9 time for a woman 40+ runner. Marcia Morrison recorded the #8 time for a 50+ woman runner. Ken Napier improved his seasonal best by 3+ minutes. Todd Hayes ran the fastest on this course since he ran 28:38 in December 1994.

Scott's time was the best that he has run this course (by 32 seconds) since he started running it 4 years ago. Amanda Gerhardt of the Aggies led the ladies with a 14-second win over Kristina Mathias. Al Murray led the 40+ men and Pauline Beatty led the 40+ ladies. Greg Burke recorded the #10 50+ time to lead the 50+ men runners. Dick Chimenti came within 9 seconds of his 50+ PR, which he set over 4 years ago, while recording the #3 55/59 time (behind Bill Mossie at 17:32 and Ken Napier at 17:36). Betty Root led the 50+ ladies. Newcomer Ralph Poole ran the #3 best-ever 60+ time while edging Norm Saucedo for 60+ honors this morning. Chris Hallen improved her PR by 51 seconds.

** This team lost about 45 seconds when they missed a handoff 2 laps from the end. They would probably have finished in the low 28:20s or better.

*** Russ Kinsch strained his hamstring and the team had to drop out with a lap to go. They would probably have run in the high 28:10s.

We had a good turnout for this workout. All teams were rated to finish in 28:30. Abby Seyoum ran with us for the first time. She was rated to run 49 seconds per run but apparently ran much faster. John Bronson of the second place team looked like he ran much faster than his rating of 41 as he probably averaged 38. Dave Garcia of the 3rd place team probably ran well under his rating of 39.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Scott Bang

We had great weather for running the Short Six this morning -- overcast sky, no wind, and temperature in the low 50s. Dave Fergus rocketed off to a fast start and was never seen again as he cruised to an easy win, recording the #14 40+ time for this course. Meanwhile, Scott Bang was cooling the rockets in his car while getting a speeding ticket on Saratoga Avenue. Thus, he arrived at the start 13 minutes late and then took off to break his PR by 45 seconds. Dick Chimenti led the 50+ men. Joann Dahlkoetter led the ladies. It was a close fight for second place woman with Kelly, Marian, and Sue running close for most of the race and Kelly getting the edge at the end. 60+ runners Karl Misner and Norm Saucedo had a tough battle with 59-year-old Bob Shuck with Karl Misner scoring the win, the #5 time for a 60+ runner. Marcia Morrison recorded the #7 50+ time for women.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Dave Nellis

We had good weather for this run as the weather was overcast and windless. Dave Nellis won by about 100 yards. Al Murray, who just turned 40 a couple of weeks ago, led the 40+ runners. Danny Moon led the 50+ runners, and Gene (PR) Antonides led the 60+ runners. Ray Stewart was the lone 70+ runner. Becki Kriege led the ladies, Sue Francis led the 40+ ladies, and Jutta (the loafer) McCormick led the 50+ ladies. Karin Bivens ran an extra 3/4 of a mile because she did not know that she had to turn at Douglas. This sets her up for a big PR the next time that we run this course.

    * Were supposed to start at 13:00.

All teams were handicapped to finish in 40:00. Twelve teams finished within 30 seconds of the handicapped time. Interestingly, only the team that Warfel handicapped actually finished in exactly 40:00. Walt was way off on Chris Hallen, but we broke tradition and gave the trophy to the winners anyway!

The splits are decipherable from the video tape but that has not been done yet. A special thanks to Brookman and Whalen who did a great job of timing with 24 teams to keep track of! Their notes will be of great help to the investigative committee (Walt) who actually figures out all the splits. And finally, another special thank you to Danny who did the video tape analysis to get the finishing times.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Art Brookman (the scorekeeper!)

Due to the unexpected high turnout of runners, the handicapper did not give the teams handicaps based upon the individual runners' ratings. Accordingly, the Russell/Bang team got away with an easy win. The Bang team started 5:45 sooner than they should have started in comparison to the Madelyn Moon team. If the teams had started based upon the ratings, the Rostege team would have won and the range of times for the first 19 teams would have been a little under two minutes. We were not able to get the runners' individual splits.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - John Bronson

We had a light turnout this morning as many club members were resting for the race tomorrow. Inasmuch as there was a big high school meet starting at 9AM, we decided to start the relay as soon as possible. So, no handicapping was done this morning. The winning team was put together at the last moment and, as can be seen, they had an easy time winning the race as they nearly lapped the field. An attempt was made to make the remaining teams equal but it did not work out.

This was a cold and crisp morning with temperatures in the mid 40s. Eddie Tico took the early lead and led for a little less than a mile before Ray Russell took over the lead on the way to a 15:50. Ray ran splits of 5:38-5:22-4:50 with a final half mile of 2:20. Becki Kriege edged Kristina Mathias to lead the ladies. Tim O'Rourke led the 40+ men while recording the #5 40+ time for this course. Karl Misner ran his best time on this course in two years to lead the 60+ men while recording the #4 60+ time for this course. Ken Noel, who turned 60 during the past week, recorded the #5 60+ time. Ray Stewart led the 70+ men while improving his PR by 72 seconds. His time puts him #2 on the 70+ list, just 16 seconds behind the #1 time of Dave Valles. Ray lost some time when he drifted off course at a turn. Dave Fergus showed signs of getting back into top form with his 16:38. Tim Rostege continued his gradual improvement with a 12-second improvement on his last Valle Vista run. Matt Bordoni improved his PR by 5 1/2 minutes to win the weekly trophy. Mary Vidovich improved her PR by 65 seconds to move to #8 on the all-time women's list. Ken Napier started his comeback with a 24:28. We conducted two simultaneous events on this miserable morning - rainy and windy.

Don Hogue led the hardy souls who ran the 5K. Al Murray, Danny Moon, and Dave Norlander bettered their time from last week despite poorer conditions. Madelyn Moon got a friendly slap on the rear end each time hubby Danny lapped her (3 times). However, she got a lingering 4th slap from an unidentified party (Madelyn was running with her head down so that her hat would not blow off). Ken Starr will soon launch an investigation to determine the guilty party.

Prior to the start of the relay, Ray Russell announced that winning a relay meant nothing to him. After all of the runners finished their 10-minute laughing jag, we started the race. Scott Bang ran 3:26 on his last leg to bring his team from second to first place. Ray had the best splits at 3:18/3:30/3:25/3:15. Kristina Mathias ran 3:50/3:46/3:47/3:39.

It rained a fair amount overnight. It stopped a bit around 7:30 AM but again began raining moderately at 7:45 AM. Further, all of lane 1 and lane 2 on the backstretch was covered with water. We were uncertain of what to do. Finally, we decided to run the 5K with an option to run another 5K next Saturday.

Fortunately, the rain stopped just before the race and it did not rain again until after the race was over. During the race, Don Hogue swept the water out of lane 2, which saved us a little distance. Tim O'Rourke, despite the slippery conditions, running wide on the turns, going wide to pass the slugs, and having no competition, still was able to break 17 minutes. Becki Kriege also ran well to lead the ladies.

This was a truly miserable morning. It was cold. It rained. And, it was windy. Yet, 35 runners participated in the workout and three timed. The Vidovich team was the first to finish but they had to use Cecil Baumgartner as a substitue for two runs. The Russell team was the next across the line but Ray was given a favorable rating because he said that he would run easy. And, he did until he saw that his team had a chance to win on the last leg. The Moon team was the first legit finisher. Ray Russell had the fastest cumulative time and was closely followed by Eddie Tico. Kristina Mathias led the ladies at 15:27. Todd Hayes led the 40+ men at 15:32. Pauline Beatty was the top 40+ lady at 19:52. Greg Burke led the 50+ men with an impressive 14:37. Georgia Riley led the 50+ ladies at 19:57. Karl Misner was the top 60+ runner at 16:57. Tim Rostege led the eight 55+ runners at 16:08.

Phantom Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Mary Vidovich

We were supposed to get heavy rain this morning. Fortunately, it only rained intermittently and then only very lightly. Tim O'Rourke, Eddie Tico, and Jim Bordoni ran together for 3 miles when Tim sprinted away to victory and then made a quick trip to the john. Jim Bordoni had second place sewed up until he had to slow for a car at the Fruitvale crossing. Eddie seized the opportunity to catch up and then sprinted away for the second place finish. Greg Burke knocked 68 seconds off his PR while moving to #13 on the 50+ list for this course. Becki Kriege easily led the ladies. Kristina continued to improve her conditioning as she was the second woman finisher. Mary Vidovich improved her PR by 14 seconds. Bob Shuck led the 55+ men again. Russ Kinsch picked on all the slow runners. He went out slow and then ran by us like we were standing still. Matt Bordoni has gotten into better condition over the last two months as he improved his November Farwell time by over three minutes. Karl Misner improved his 60+ PR by 9 seconds. Congrats to Ken Napier. He ran a PW. Don Packwood was pleased to run his third consecutive 28+ on this course. Prior to those performances, he ran a 24:15 in November 1996. Glen Douglas ran a 30:48 in his first run with us in over 10 years. He has a best of 21:50. Stan DeMartinis, Damon Lease, Phillip Lease, and several other all-star timers recorded our performances. Damon, Cheryl, and Phillip will leave to return to their igloo in Anchorage tomorrow.

Kristina Mathias made her first appearance in a long time (due to an injury). Damon and Cheryl Lease dropped by to visit us from Anchorage. Dave Garcia and Gene Antonides ran all of the way out to Fruitvale Ave on their first run. We took pictures so that we could replace the old club picture now on our web page.

Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Sheaffer & Stewart

The scheduled workout was the step-up and step-down relay. However, there were puddles on the track and it was raining; so, we changed the workout to the tennis court loop relay. Doug Sheaffer and Malcolm Stewart showed up for the first time in many moons and claimed to be in very poor condition. Malcolm went so far as to state that he did not think that he would be able to complete the workout. After receiving a favorable handicap, they went out and cruised to an easy win. The second place team also received a favorable handicap because we had no line on Tom Frazier and Tom Warfel claimed that he would be running very slow. Eddie Tico led the open men with his 14:43. Danny Moon led the 40+ and 50+ men. Jutta led the open ladies, the 40+ ladies, and the 50+ ladies.

Phantom Dick Barrett Trophy Winner - Mike Hegglund

This was a good morning for running (moderate temperature and no wind). However, there were no spectacular times.
