Valentine Team Race

Valentine Race History by Walt Van Zant

We began this race in 1979. It was a replacement for the original the Christmas Relays that ran between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz. This edition of the race was canceled due to problems with traffic.

In 1979, the West Valley Track Club had not yet begun their Christmas Relays around Lake Merced, so our club came up with this course as a replacement for the Half Moon to Santa Cruz Relay.

Our race was held in December 1979 and anyone could run the race. It was not handicapped and groups put their own teams together. 1979 was the only year, we opened the race up to people outside of WVJS. We continued to run this race in December through the mid/late-1980s and then switched to February.  About this time, we transitioned from a traditional relay style race to the cross country format we now have in order to save time.

Here is a link to a spreadsheet containing times run by all participants from 1979 thru 2025.
Below, are the top 10 times of all time.
